Google Lets Slip That It’s Exploring Possible Bitcoin Integration Plans

He promised to get back in touch ‘when we are a little more sure.’  When Malik posted Ramaswamy’s response to the Bitcoin forum on Reddit and immediately got an positive response from the site’s bitcoiners, Google Wallet exec Ariel Bardin followed up by asking Malik to serve as a moderator on a Google survey posing the question ‘What would I want Google to do with Bitcoin?'”

Yahoo malware turned European computers into bitcoin slaves

“As many as two million European users of Yahoo may have received PC malware from virus-laden ads served by its homepage over a four-day period last week.  Some of the malware would turn PCs into bitcoin miners – a huge drain on its computing resources – without users’ knowledge. Yahoo has been criticised for not saying how many people could be affected or doing anything to help those with the malware, which attacked flaws in Java modules on systems.  Fox IT, the Dutch cybersecurity firm which first disclosed the vulnerability to the public, estimated that there were around 27,000 infections every hour the malware was live on the site.”

Google, Yahoo back doors to US intel agencies: Ex-security official

Falkenrath, a former US Deputy Homeland Security Advisor, said in a Tuesday interview with Bloomberg television that the ‘US government has too much access to the privacy’ of Internet users.  Falkenrath said the progress in information technology (IT) and computer servers has in recent years been significantly beyond the imagination of US policymakers.   He said confidential documents have recently revealed that the US government and its intelligence organizations have extensive access to the encoded data and communications of people through companies providing email services.”

Encrypted chat service Cryptocat for iPhone rejected by Apple

“Developer Nadim Kobeissi took to Twitter today to blast the iPhone and iPad maker for unjustly rejecting Cryptocat for iPhone, software that was announced earlier this month. Cryptocat made waves for offering a simple way to let two people chat while using end-to-end encryption. The service gained international attention (and some notoriety) in light of government eavesdropping, and its use in countries where free speech was limited. That’s come with some costs: Kobeissi says he’s gone through extra security screenings when traveling; and fearing intrusion from the Canadian government earlier this year, he moved Cryptocat’s entire network to a Swedish nuclear bunker.”

Google Approves Cyanogen’s Oppo N1 Phone

“Cyanogen, a company known for its free, open source operating system and community built distribution of Android for smartphones and tablets, finally received Google’s approval to produce the Oppo N1 phone after previously warning them in Nov. 2013 that its installer encourages phone owners to void their warranty.  Cyanogen reportedly pulled out its installer from Google Play after the said warning, but now, it looks like they’re back on Google Play because of Google’s blessing.  This is perfect timing for both Google and Cyanogen because Cyanogen just announced that it will release the +CyanogenMod version (Cyanogen’s version of Android) of the Oppo N1 phone on Dec. 24, 2013.”

Google: Not optimistic on future of Bitcoin

“Bitcoin may be gaining popularity but a senior official of internet giant Google said he was not ‘particularly optimistic’ about the digital currency’s future since it suffers from being the first in that space.  ‘It (bitcoin) is partly a medium of transaction, a medium of exchange,’ Google’s chief economist Hal Varian said.  ‘I think something like this technology will take hold in the future but I am not particularly optimistic about bitcoin because it suffers from being the first in the area. [..] We have a saying in the US that you can always tell pioneers that they are the ones with errors in their bags,” Varian said here.  He was interacting with the audience after giving a talk organised by economic policy think tank ICRIER.”

Google Said to Mull Designing Chips in Threat to Intel

“Google Inc. (GOOG) is considering designing its own server processors using technology from ARM Holdings Plc (ARM), said a person with knowledge of the matter, a move that could threaten Intel Corp. (INTC)’s market dominance.  By using its own designs, Google could better manage the interactions between hardware and software, said the person, who asked not to be identified because the matter is private.  ‘We are actively engaged in designing the world’s best infrastructure,’ said a spokeswoman for Google. ‘This includes both hardware design (at all levels) and software design.’ She declined to say whether the company may develop its own chips.”

“Jeff Bezos is happy to take your money even if you buy under a false name, pay via a credit card in the name of a New Mexico LLC with anonymous members and have items delivered to an anonymous mail-drop address.  In other words, there’s no reason you can’t operate online using an alter ego – another ‘self’ or, preferably, more than one. All it takes is a few simple steps: pseudonyms, anonymous LLCs for your credit-card accounts, mail drops and so on. That way, even if the Feds raid Amazon or Google, they won’t be getting your real data.  For the purposes of government snooping on the servers of the Big Data companies, you’ll remain an anonymous alter ego in the crowd.”

French agency caught minting SSL certificates impersonating Google

“Rekindling concerns about the system millions of websites use to encrypt and authenticate sensitive data, Google caught a French governmental agency spoofing digital certificates for several Google domains.  After Google brought the certificates to the attention of agency officials, the officials said the intermediate certificate was used in a commercial device on a private network to inspect encrypted traffic with the knowledge of end users, Google security engineer Adam Langley wrote in a blog post published over the weekend. Google updated its Chrome browser to reject all certificates signed by the intermediate authority and asked other browser makers to do the same.”
