Dangerous Experiment in Fetal Engineering

“A new paper just published in the Journal of Bioethical Inquiry uses extensive Freedom of Information Act findings to detail an extremely troubling off-label medical intervention employed in the U.S. on pregnant women to intentionally engineer the development of their fetuses for sex normalization purposes. For more than 10 years, medical societies repeatedly but ultimately impotently expressed high alarm at use of this off-label intervention outside prospective clinical trials, because it is so high risk and because nearly 90 percent of those exposed cannot benefit.”

Contra Costa’s $45 million computer health care system endangering lives, nurses say

“A new medical computer system used at Contra Costa correctional facilities recommended what could have been a fatal dose of a West County Jail inmate’s heart medication last week, an incident that a detention nurse characterized Tuesday as one of many recent close calls with the month-old program.  The $45 million EPIC system integrates detention medical records with the other arms of the county health system. The system led to 142 nursing complaints in July.”

Woman with thalidomide-related birth defects wins multi-million dollar settlement from drug companies

“An Australian woman born without arms and legs after her mother took thalidomide during pregnancy, on Wednesday won a landmark multi-million dollar settlement in her class action against drug firms.  Lynette Rowe, 50, is leading a mass lawsuit on behalf of people born with congenital defects in Australia and New Zealand between 1958 and 1970 whose mothers took the sedative thalidomide, made by German chemical firm Grunenthal.” [So when can swarthy folk whose birth defects originate in Western military conquest apply?]

“Some 4 million individuals without insurance are expected to pay about $55 billion over eight years. Employers could be dinged an estimated $106 billion for failing to meet the mandate, which starts in 2014.  But that mandate money, whether it’s called taxes or penalties, is overwhelmed by other taxes, fees and shrunken tax breaks in the law. These other levies could top $675 billion over the next 10 years. Other major taxes are aimed at the health care industry, and some of that cost is sure to be passed along to consumers as higher prices.”
