Merck Has Some Explaining To Do Over Its MMR Vaccine Claims

“Merck, the pharmaceutical giant, is facing a slew of controversies over its Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine following numerous allegations of wrongdoing from different parties in the medical field, including two former Merck scientists-turned-whistleblowers. A third whistleblower, this one a scientist at the Centers for Disease Control, also promises to bring Merck grief following his confession of misconduct involving the same MMR vaccine.  The controversies will find Merck defending itself and its vaccine in at least two federal court cases after a U.S. District judge earlier this month threw out Merck’s attempts at dismissal.”

GlaxoSmithKline Starts First Human Trials For Ebola Vaccine In Africa

“The trials are expedited and aim to achieve in months something that generally takes years. Even the trial setup period was just two months long, compared to the six months to one year time period it generally takes to start a vaccine trial. GSK is also starting production of 10,000 doses of its vaccines simultaneously with the trials from the funds provided by UK’s Wellcome Trust and other donor organizations. The rationale behind starting production before trial results is that if the vaccine is successful it can immediately be provided to health workers in the affected regions without any unnecessary delays.”

GlaxoSmithKline fined $490m by China for bribery

“China has fined UK pharmaceuticals firm GlaxoSmithKline $490m (£297m) after a court found it guilty of bribery.  The record penalty follows allegations the drug giant paid out bribes to doctors and hospitals in order to have their products promoted.  The court gave GSK’s former head of Chinese operations, Mark Reilly, a suspended three-year prison sentence and he is set to be deported.  Other GSK executives have also been given suspended jail sentences. Chinese authorities first announced they were investigating GSK in July last year, in what has become the biggest corruption scandal to hit a foreign firm in years.”

GlaxoSmithKline fined $3bn for bribing doctors to increase drugs sales [2012]

“The company encouraged sales reps in the US to mis-sell three drugs to doctors and lavished hospitality and kickbacks on those who agreed to write extra prescriptions, including trips to resorts in Bermuda, Jamaica and California.  Psychiatrists and their partners were flown to five-star hotels, on all-expenses-paid trips where speakers, paid up to $2,500 to attend, gave presentations on the drugs. They could enjoy diving, golf, fishing and other extra activities arranged by the company.  GSK also paid for articles on its drugs to appear in medical journals and ‘independent’ doctors were hired by the company to promote the treatments, according to court documents.”

Use of Marijuana Said to Reduce Deaths From Painkillers by 25%

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“So-called ‘opiates’ are a very lucrative market for Big Pharma. Unfortunately, their chemical construction often renders them overly-powerful for some people, even when only a little is ingested. Additionally, chemical combinations mimicking natural compositions often yield up considerable ‘side effects.’ The use of marijuana by itself or in combination with opiates seems to be ameliorating or at least lessening some of the dangers of chemically constructed painkillers. This is certainly good news. What remains problematic is the continued barrage of criticism that cannabis is subject to from deep-pocketed pharmaceutical companies and from law enforcement itself.”

Feds attack FedEx on behalf of Big Pharma

“Big Pharma obviously benefits if online competitors are choked out, but turning FedEx into an arm of law enforcement has advantages for the federal government as well. If federal agents searched private mail without warrants or probable cause, people would cry ‘Fourth Amendment!’  But private shippers are not bound by constitutional restraints. The ‘right’ to check packages can be written into the business agreement that customers sign. If a customer objects, then he is free to go elsewhere. By controlling FedEx policy, the DOJ would be able to search packages in absentia and make targeted arrests if illegal contents are found.”

The Real Reason Pot Is Still Illegal

“Given that CADCA is dedicated to protecting society from dangerous drugs, the event that day had a curious sponsor: Purdue Pharma, the manufacturer of Oxy-Contin, the highly addictive painkiller that nearly ruined Kennedy’s congressional career and has been linked to thousands of overdose deaths nationwide.  Prescription opioids, a line of pain-relieving medications derived from the opium poppy or produced synthetically, are the most dangerous drugs abused in America, with more than 16,000 deaths annually linked to opioid addiction and overdose. The CDC reports that more Americans now die from painkillers than from heroin and cocaine combined.

Reefer Madness Redux

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“What’s especially obnoxious about these conclusions is that they argue marijuana ‘damages lives’ but ignore the devastating effects of long-term incarceration on the individuals and families swept up for non-violent criminal violations into the West’s massive penal-industrial complex. There is plenty of evidence that prohibition doesn’t work and that the blight from those kinds of policies – as well as the individual and familial ruin – is considerably worse than the item being prohibited. Of course, the pharmaceutical companies that are doubtless supportive of ‘studies’ like this don’t care about the larger social costs.”

Dallas Buyer’s Club Illustrates How Regulations Kill

“Back in the mid-1980s, AIDS patients lived less than two years after being diagnosed. Using drugs available overseas, some of which are still not marketed in the US, Woodroof beats the odds.  While Woodroof was fighting the FDA, I was working at a major pharmaceutical firm. By the time that the FDA gave us permission to test our drugs in people, every AIDS patient in the country who wanted them had already tried them. The Buyers Clubs either obtained them overseas or hired black market chemists to make them. Much valuable information about how these drugs worked—or didn’t work—could have been obtained from these Clubs if their operations hadn’t been in legal limbo.”

Officer blames psychotic stabbings on antibiotics, gets his job back

“A Virginia Beach police officer who was jailed for three months after stabbing two Accomack County firefighters and shooting at a third says there should have been warning labels on an antibiotic that briefly turned him psychotic.  In Accomack County, he crashed and called 911. The lawsuit says the responding firefighters’ helmets ‘had the number four on them and that their fire engine was Engine Forty-Four.’ Colas thought they were demons. He stabbed two and shot at a third ‘with the bullet striking the man’s pant leg.’  Prosecutors eventually dropped the charges and Colas returned to his Virginia Beach police job.”
