“In the wake of the Armstrong scandal, which saw the Texan stripped of his seven Tour de France titles and banned from the sport for life, anti-doping agencies had to work more closely with the pharmaceutical industry. One way that the industry had helped so far was by making available to WADA samples of certain medications not yet available to the wider public to help develop tests more quickly and effectively when they are adapted for illegal use in sport. Rogge, however, said that sport also needed to enlist the support of law enforcement agencies to fight against doping, given that it frequently had links to ‘other forms of corruption’.”

French doctors stand trial for covering up deadly radiation overdoses

“At least seven people died out of a group of 24 patients who received doses of radiation up to 20% more than they should have been given at the Jean Monnet hospital in Epinal, in the Vosges in north-east France between 2001 and 2006. Another 424 patients received doses of between 8-10% higher than a safe level, due to a ‘calibration error’. Most of the victims, who suffered severe internal burns from the radiation, were being treated for prostate cancer.”

“Turns out a component of cannabis fights cancer, according to research. Scientists at California Pacific Medical Center found that cannabidiol, or CBD, has the ability to ‘turn off’ the DNA that causes ‘breast and other types of cancers’ to metastasize, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. ‘If this plant were discovered in the Amazon today, scientists would be falling all over each other to be the first to bring it to market,’ said Dr. Donald Abrams, chief of oncology at the University of California San Francisco, which has also found science behind marijuana’s efficacy.”

Mammogram radiation may put young women at higher risk of breast cancer

“The study, which looked at 2,000 women with the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genetic markers in the Netherlands, France and the U.K. between 2006 and 2009, found women under 30 who experienced chest radiation had 43 precent increased risk of developing breast cancer over women who didn’t have exposure to chest radiation. Exposure before age 20 increased the risk by 62 percent. ‘We believe countries who use mammograms in women under 30 should reconsider their guidelines,’ one of the study’s authors, Anouk Pijpe of the Netherlands Cancer Institute, told the Associated Press.”

“CT scans alone, which deliver 100 to 500 times the radiation associated with an ordinary X-ray and now provide three-fourths of Americans’ radiation exposure, are believed to account for 1.5 percent of all cancers that occur in the United States. Patients may be surprised to learn that some of the newest uses of radiological imaging, including CT scans of coronary arteries to look for calcium buildup, have not yet been tested in scientifically designed clinical trials, and thus their true benefits are at best a guess.”
