‘Dark Wallet’ wants to make Bitcoin even harder to trace

“Dark Wallet is a browser app for bitcoin payments that uses both encryption and CoinJoin technology.  CoinJoin essentially mixes multiple bitcoin transactions, selected at random, as one transfer of funds and conceals the original payers.  Dark Wallet offers anonymous transactions by default.  The political orientation of Dark Wallet’s backers unSystem attracted attention to the app when it was launched on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website, where it raised more than $52,000 last December.  ‘Bitcoin is the next battle ground in the fight against supranational political domination,’ wrote the backers, including Cody Wilson, known for creating the world’s first 3D-printed gun.”

US Defense Dept. analyzing Bitcoin as potential terrorism threat

“The US Defense Department is conducting a counterterrorism program investigation of virtual currencies like Bitcoin and other new technologies, including smartphones and social media, to better understand if they pose security threats.  Run by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office (CTTSO), a division of the Pentagon that analyzes terrorism and irregular warfare capabilities, the program recently ended its open call for vendors that could help the US military understand the technologies and any threats they could potentially pose, the International Business Times reported.”

Mt. Gox Settlement Proposal Could Make Former Users Whole

“The ongoing legal battle over the future of Mt. Gox took a sudden turn on 29th April, when it was announced that Sunlot Holdings, the investor group seeking to buy what remains of the business, and lawyers representing the company’s global consumer creditors had struck a settlement deal.  Under that proposal, former exchange users would support Sunlot’s bid to buy and relaunch Mt. Gox in exchange for a 16.5% equity stake in the new business and settle with key defendants.  Lawyers representing international creditors will be continuing actions against CEO Mark Karpeles, Mt. Gox’s parent company Tibanne, Japan-based megabank Mizudo and other as-yet-unnamed defendants.”

US State Bank Supervisors to Discuss Bitcoin at Public Hearing

“In late February, the US Conference of State Bank Supervisors (CSBS), a membership organisation for state banking regulators that liaises with Congress, announced it would launch a new task force aimed at investigating emerging payments issues, including topics related to bitcoin and other digital currencies.  To date, nine state banking officials have joined the task force, including New York Department of Financial Services superintendent Benjamin Lawsky. The organisation’s fact-finding mission will take one of its first steps on 16th May, when the CSBS will hold a public hearing on emerging payment issues in Chicago, Illinois.”

Former US Consumer Finance Watchdog Voices Support for Bitcoin

“Raj Date, the former Deputy Director of the US Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), a consumer finance watchdog, said in an interview this week that he supports – and is now investing in – bitcoin.  During a segment of Bloomberg Television’s ‘Street Smart,’ Date commented that, on a personal level, he sees a lot of potential in digital currencies like bitcoin.  In the interview, Date said that bitcoin has the potential to deliver faster and more secure payments than is currently possible for most consumers, and remarked that the pace of innovation could result in a broader evolution in digital currencies.”

U.S. Fed’s Kocherlakota says interested in bitcoin

“A top U.S. Federal Reserve official said on Tuesday he is interested in the fast-emerging bitcoin, although he scoffed at the idea that the virtual currency could replace the dollar.  Minneapolis Federal Reserve Bank President Narayana Kocherlakota, speaking at a town hall at North Dakota State University, said he is interested in bitcoin as a technology, not as a currency.  He speculated that bitcoin could make payments among individuals faster. ‘That’s where I think the interest of it is, myself, as opposed to a new currency that’s going to drive the U.S. dollar out of circulation.'”

Texas Governor Candidate Welcomes ‘Bitcoin Community’ to Campaign

“Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott, who’s running for governor against Wendy Davis, has a new plan to attract young, digitally-savvy voters: Bitcoin.  Abbott’s campaign announced this week that it would officially accept the cryptocurrency donations.  In a stump speech on Wednesday, Abbott said, ‘We welcome the Bitcoin community to join our team.’  Bitcoin users tend to be young, white, libertarian males. This is partly because Bitcoin is completely decentralized and outside the Federal Reserve’s purview. While Abbott isn’t one of the politicians calling to ‘End the Fed,’ he is definitely a proponent of states rights. As Attorney General, he sued the federal government 27 times.”

Meet Ireland’s first bitcoin politician

“A candidate for Dun Laoghaire in next month’s Irish local elections, Ossian Smyth, has become the first politician on the island of Ireland to accept bitcoin donations. He said the cryptocurrency has the potential to bring more transparency to politics in Ireland.  Smyth, who is running for the Green Party, is an IT consultant who has worked with Microsoft and Citibank, and now works at St Vincent’s Hospital. He also mentors the local CoderDojo in Dun Laoghaire.  He is also the Green Party’s internet spokesman and representative for communications, energy and natural resources.”
