“Among the more than two dozen American personnel evacuated from the city after the assault on the American mission and a nearby annex were about a dozen C.I.A. operatives and contractors  Within months of the start of Libyan revolution in February 2011, the C.I.A. began building a meaningful but covert presence in Benghazi, a locus of the rebel efforts to oust the government of Colonel Qaddafi.  Though the agency has been cooperating with the new post-Qaddafi Libyan intelligence service, the size of the C.I.A.’s presence in Benghazi apparently surprised some Libyan leaders.”

U.S. suspends joint military operations with Afghanistan after insider attacks

“American commanders said that joint operations on the ground will be suspended ‘until further notice’ in a dramatic admission that the strategy to shift responsibility for fighting the insurgents to local forces has been deeply compromised by Afghan government soldiers and policemen killing 51 Nato soldiers in 36 attacks this year. At least 12 attacks were carried out last month alone, leaving 15 dead.  The admission that Nato troops are no longer safe from the forces they are relying on to keep the Taliban at bay after the final US pullout in 2014 is a severe blow to Washington’s military plans.”

U.S. ‘troubled’ as Bahrain upholds activists’ sentences

“The United States said Tuesday it was ‘deeply troubled’ after a Bahrain appeals court upheld jail terms against 13 leading activists over charges of plotting to overthrow the Gulf monarchy.  The US urged Bahrain ‘to abide by its commitment to respect detainees’ right to due process and to transparent judicial proceedings, including fair trials and access to attorneys.  It is important that verdicts are based on credible evidence and that judicial proceedings are conducted in full accordance with Bahraini law and Bahrain’s international legal obligations,’ State Department spokesman Patrick Ventrell said.

Al Qaeda in Iraq threatens attacks in U.S.

“The militant organization that was once the scourge of the U.S. military campaign in Iraq and probably is responsible for more than 100 deaths in the country over the last few days has set its sights on launching attacks in the United States, intelligence officials said. The arrests highlight ‘the potential threat posed to the United States’ from Al Qaeda in Iraq, said Matthew Olsen, the director of the National Counterterrorism Center.”  [Gee, where did these guys come from?]
