France Pays Price for Front-Line Role From Syria to West Africa

“France was the first European country to join the U.S. air strikes on Islamic State in Iraq last year and is the only European country to join the U.S. in air strikes in Syria.  France sent troops to Mali in January 2013 to prevent the country falling to an al-Qaeda affiliate based in the Sahel. That intervention has now been transformed into a mission covering Niger and Chad to prevent Islamic militants based in southern Libya from destabilizing the area. This isn’t the first time France’s involvement abroad has led to terrorism at home. In 1995, Algerian Islamists set off eight bombing attacks in Paris to punish France for supporting the government in that country’s civil war.”

Breaking the last taboo – Gaza and the threat of world war

“Since 2001, the United States and its allies have been on a rampage. In Iraq, at least 700,000 men, woman and children are dead as a result. The rise of jihadists – in a country where there was none – is the result. Known as al-Qaeda and now the Islamic State, modern jihadism was invented by US and Britain, assisted by Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. The original aim was to use and develop an Islamic fundamentalism that had barely existed in much of the Arab world in order to undermine pan-Arab movements and secular governments. By the 1980s, this had become a weapon to destroy the USSR in Afghanistan. The CIA called it Operation Cyclone; and a cyclone it turned out to be.”

Russia developing new nuclear weapons to counter US, NATO

“Russia is developing an array of new nuclear and conventional weapons to counter recent moves by the US and NATO, President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday as the military successfully tested a new intercontinental ballistic missile launched from a nuclear submarine.  Putin accused the West of using the crisis in Ukraine to reinvigorate NATO, warning that Moscow will ponder a response to the alliance’s decision to create a rapid-reaction ‘spearhead’ force to protect Eastern Europe.  His comments came as Russia’s relations with the West have plunged to their lowest point since the Cold War due to Russia’s role in the crisis in Ukraine.”

Afghan policeman kills 7 allies after US general slain in “insider” attack

“U.S. officials prepared to fly the body of a two-star general slain in an Afghan ‘insider attack’ back home, as a similar attack saw an Afghan police officer drug and shoot  dead seven of his colleagues, authorities said.  The investigation into the killing of Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene, the highest-ranked U.S. officer to be slain in combat since 1970 in the Vietnam War, continued Wednesday without any clear answers into why a man dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire. The shooting wounded about 15 people, including a German general and two Afghan generals.  The attack at underscored the tensions that persist as the U.S. and NATO troops’ combat role winds down in Afghanistan.”

ISIS Is Internet Savvy

“A Los Angeles Times story reports on how well organized ISIS is with respect to the Internet. It gets its story to its target audiences.  ISIS a year ago was part of the American government’s system of allies in Syria. ISIS was conducting a civil war against Assad’s Syrian government. ISIS was a freedom fighting organization.  Conclusion: ‘Let’s bomb Syria.’  Now we are assured by senior U.S. government officials that ISIS is the #1 terrorist organization in the world.  Conclusion: ‘Let’s bomb Syria.'”

ISIS: Made in Washington, Riyadh – and Tel Aviv

antiwar_logo4

“ISIS didn’t just arise out of the earth like some Islamist variation on the fabled Myrmidons: they needed money, weapons, logistics, propaganda facilities, and international connections to reach the relatively high level of organization and lethality they seem to have achieved in such a short period of time. Where did they get these assets?  None of this is any secret: Saudi ArabiaQatar, and the rest of the oil-rich Gulf states have been backing them all the way. Prince Bandar al-Sultanuntil recently the head of the Kingdom’s intelligence agency – and still the chief of its National Security Council – has been among their biggest backers.”

Ron Paul: Obama Has No Middle East Strategy? Good!

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Three years of supporting any force that might overthrow the secular government of President Assad has produced a new monster in the Middle East that neocons insist the US must slay. Why can’t they just admit they were wrong? Why can’t the interventionists just admit that their support for regime change in Syria was a terrible and tragic mistake?  If ISIS is as big a threat as they claim, why can’t they simply ask Assad to help out? Assad has never threatened the United States; ISIS has. Assad has been fighting ISIS and similar Islamist extremist groups for three years. Why does the US government insist on aligning with theocracies in the Middle East?”

Russia to block US agricultural imports

“Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday hit back hard against countries that have imposed sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, ordering trade cuts that an official said would include a ban on all imports of agricultural products from the United States.  White House spokeswoman Laura Lucas Magnuson decried the move, saying ‘Retaliating against Western companies or countries will deepen Russia’s international isolation, causing further damage to its own economy.’  Russia last week banned the import of apples and some other fruits from Poland, saying this was because of sanitary concerns.”

Washington Opened The Gates Of Hell In Iraq: Now Come The Furies

“Ironically, the bloodthirsty ISIS is comprised of fighters who were first enabled by the misbegotten Bush maneuver known as the ‘surge’; then armed and trained by the CIA for the campaign against Assad;  and now brandish the best weapons that any ramshackle jihadist group ever had.  And yet America’s ‘peace’ President is sending the bombers back in because there is a ‘humanitarian crisis’ involving a religious sect no American has ever heard of, stranded on a mountain top that has nothing to do with the security and safety of the citizens of Lincoln NE and Spokane WA.  Has not the American war machine turned the entirety of Mesopotamia and the Levant into a humanitarian crisis?”

US Drug Policy and the Border Child Immigration Crisis

“The majority of the child immigrants are coming from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Those Northern Triangle countries suffered not only devastating civil wars in the 1980s, with the US supporting conservative, often dictatorial governments (or, in the case of Honduras, serving as a platform against the government in Nicaragua), but also chronic poverty and income inequality.  They are also the countries feeling the brunt of the expansion of powerful Mexican drug trafficking organizations who, in response to increased pressure from the Mexican government (assisted by US aid under the Merida agreement) began pushing south into the region around 2008.”
