Mark Lerner: The Chilling Effect of Domestic Spying

“Denial is no longer an option.  For years, even decades it has been reported by people inside and outside our government that agencies and departments within our federal government have been spying on citizens and further collecting data (Personal Identifiable Information) associated with the domestic spying taking place.  Many of us who discussed the spying taking place were called conspiracy theorists, tin foil hat wearers, or black helicopter paranoid people:  Today we are called realists.  The Snowden revelations are unique because of the depth and scope of the revelations and because Snowden had the official documents to back up his assertions.”

Evidence That Consolidated Global Power Is Wielded by a Tiny Elite

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“For the past 12 years an elite cell at the US Treasury has been sharpening the tools of economic warfare, designing ways to bring almost any country to its knees without firing a shot. The strategy relies on hegemonic control over the global banking system, buttressed by a network of allies and the reluctant acquiescence of neutral states. Let us call this the Manhattan Project of the early 21st century. The stealth weapon is a ‘scarlet letter’, devised under Section 311 of the US Patriot Act. Once a bank is tainted in this way – accused of money-laundering or underwriting terrorist activities, a suitably loose offence – it becomes radioactive, caught in the ‘boa constrictor’s lethal embrace’.”

Venezuela issues ID cards to curtail food hoarding

“Battling food shortages, the government is rolling out a new ID system that is either a grocery loyalty card with extra muscle or the most dramatic step yet toward rationing in Venezuela, depending on who is describing it.  Registration began Tuesday at more than 100 government-run supermarkets across the country.  Patrons will register with their fingerprints, and the new ID card will be linked to a computer system that monitors purchases. On Tuesday, Food Minister Felix Osorio said the process was off to a smooth start. He says the system will sound an alarm when it detects suspicious purchasing patterns, barring people from buying the same goods every day.”

Aborted babies incinerated to heat UK hospitals

“The bodies of thousands of aborted and miscarried babies were incinerated as clinical waste, with some even used to heat hospitals, an investigation has found. Ten NHS trusts have admitted burning foetal remains alongside other rubbish while two others used the bodies in ‘waste-to-energy’ plants which generate power for heat.  Last night the Department of Health issued an instant ban on the practice which health minister Dr Dan Poulter branded ‘totally unacceptable.’  At least 15,500 foetal remains were incinerated by 27 NHS trusts over the last two years alone. Parents who lose children in early pregnancy were often treated without compassion and were not consulted about the remains.”

Jeff Bezos’ Amazonian Drones

“Canada and Australia already have regulations that allow some commercial drone use. In Sydney, Australia, a textbook seller called Zookal says it plans to use six drones to drop off books at outdoor locations. A Chinese company, Shunfeng Express, is testing package delivery in the city of Dongguan.  The profit potential alone means that the commercial drone revolution is inevitable. In September, drone and aerial robotics maker 3D Robotics announced a $30 million funding round from venture capitalists.  2013 may well be looked back upon as the kickoff year for the Age of the Domestic Drone.”

The Government Plans DNA Tracking Of Those We Are Related To

“The Department of Homeland Security is soliciting information from potential contractors for a new program that the DHS hopes will enable it to use DNA tests to identify criminal suspects and track their family relationships.  Down the road, the goal is to make the use of DNA identification as common as the use of fingerprint identification is today.  If you do not think that this could ever happen, you should think again.  Barack Obama has already said that he wants a national DNA database, and a recent Supreme Court decision has opened the door wide open for one to be created.”

Soylent gets a $1.5 million infusion of venture capital

“TechCrunch is reporting that Rob Rhinehart’s Soylent, the nutritionally complete meal replacement shake/drink mix, has just closed out a $1.5 million seed funding round from a wide mix of investors led by Andreessen Horowitz and Lerer Ventures. This is on top of the $1.5 million in pre-orders the company already amassed as part of its crazy-successful crowdfunding run earlier this year.  The project has been a poster child for crowdfunding success—in fact, the sheer volume of orders has caused its own set of delays in scaling Soylent from a hand-mixed product for a few dozen testers to a mass-produced meal replacement for hundreds of thousands of customers.”

Watching you: When and where you may be tracked

“With continuing developments about my own computer that was hacked and revelations that the Justice Department subpoenaed phone records of Associated Press journalists, it got me thinking about ways throughout the day in which my movements and habits are tracked, often with my knowledge and permission.  On any given day, most of us are tracked and watched dozens of times. Of course it’s one thing to have it done as part of a convenience and with our explicit or tacit permission; it’s quite another to be subjected to an unauthorized or illegal intrusion of privacy.”

Scientists plan to launch thousands of GM ‘Frankenflies’ into fields

“Thousands of GM insects developed by British scientists are set to be the first released into fields in Europe as an alternative to chemical pesticides. The plan is to release a large number of genetically modified olive flies that would be used to kill off wild pests that damage the crop. The technology is the brainchild of experts at British company Oxitec, who insist the GM insects are better for the environment that spraying crops with chemical pesticides. The Oxitec chief executive, Hadyn Parry, accused critics of the technology who warn of danger to health and the environment of scaremongering.”

Google Glass looks silly now, but we’ll all be wearing mini-computers soon

“Add new sensors, as well as imaginative software, into these mini-computers and the impact could be significant. Non-invasive blood testing will soon be a reality, transformative for diabetics who will no longer have to puncture themselves several times a day, as well as those who have to monitor cholesterol.   Health apps will be able to monitor those blood test results, and sync with the restaurant as the wearer walks in, to suggest the most suitable low-GI or low-cholesterol meal. The behavioural implications could be profound, but we need to be interested in understanding and exploring the potential so that we are ready for the debate about who has access to this data.”
