Ron Paul: The VA Scandal is Just the Tip of the Military Abuse Iceberg

131203122616-ron-paul-bitcoin-620xa1

“The president is right to be upset over the mistreatment of US military veterans, especially those who return home with so many physical and mental injuries. But his outrage over military abuse is selective. He ignores the most egregious abuse of the US armed forces: sending them off to fight, become maimed and die in endless conflicts overseas that have no connection to US national security.  It is ironic that the same week the president condemned the alleged mistreatment of veterans by the VA, he announced that he was sending 80 armed troops to Chad to help look for a group of girls kidnapped by the Nigerian Islamist organization Boko Haram.”

Dream of U.S. energy independence was just revised away

“The U.S. shale oil ‘miracle’ took a major hit Wednesday, when the federal government announced a hefty downward revision of its estimate of the amount of recoverable oil in the No. 1 shale reserve in the U.S.: the Monterey formation in California.  A recently as this week, the much-publicized Monterey formation accounted for nearly two-thirds of all technically recoverable U.S. shale oil resources, standing at a world-class 13.7 billion barrels. But on Wednesday, that estimate was downgraded to a mere 600 million barrels, or 96% lower than the day before.  This takes the Monterey from one of the world’s largest potential fields to supplying the U.S.’s oil needs for a mere 33 days.”

Cocaine Sales, Prostitution Will Now Be Counted Into Italy’s GDP

Italy will include prostitution and illegal drug sales in the gross domestic product calculation this year, a boost for its chronically stagnant economy and Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s effort to meet deficit targets.  Drugs, prostitution and smuggling will be part of GDP as of 2014 and prior-year figures will be adjusted to reflect the change in methodology, the Istat national statistics office said today. The revision was made to comply with European Union rules, it said.  Renzi, 39, is committed to narrowing Italy’s deficit to 2.6 percent of GDP this year, a task that’s easier if output is boosted by portions of the underground economy that previously went uncounted.”

Hawks Take Flight: Why the Fed’s Hypocritical Dialectic Continues

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The Fed’s monetary expansion ended in 1929. The 1950s equity rise ended with a bust in the early 1960s. The Nifty Fifty fad ended with the Crash of 1969. The market recovery of the 1970s ended in 1982. The next crash was in 1987. In 1994, an expansion gave way to a recession. A great tech expansion turned sour in 2001. A housing bubble deflated violently in 2008, not just in the US but around the world. And that is where we are now. This expansion has been driven relentlessly upward for some five-plus years. Another year or two and this latest ‘Wall Street Party’ will be finished. We anticipate a downturn that will be as violent or even more so than 2008.”

Fed Warns Of Crackdown On Leveraged-Buyout Deals

“The Federal Reserve warned it may need to take additional action to rein in banks’ funding of corporate takeovers after observing continued deterioration of lending standards this year.  The statements were the latest warning that U.S. regulators want banks to end practices they see as risky in so-called leveraged lending markets. The Fed and the Office of the Comptroller told banks in March 2013 to avoid funding takeover deals that would leave companies with high levels of debt.  Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said that some bank-underwriting standards had loosened as a response to investor appetite for additional risk, a byproduct of low interest rates.

Union’s Pay Negotiations Play Big Role In Protests Over ‘Google Buses’

“As it turns out, many of the fights are actually being stoked by the politically powerful Service Employees International Union, which represents thousands of San Francisco city workers. Coincidentally they are also in the midst of negotiations with the city for a new proposed contract.  What is the union’s pitch? ‘We want a program that makes the city a place not just for the wealthy can thrive, but where low, moderate, middle income people can also thrive,’ said Larry Bradshaw of the SEIU. That contract would include a 15 percent pay raise over the next three years. The city would pay 85 to 100 percent of medical coverage, and a $21 an hour minimum wage for full and part time city workers.”

U.S. Government Calls for Limits on Companies’ Use of Web Data

“The White House, hoping to move the national debate over privacy beyond the National Security Agency’s surveillance activities to the practices of companies like Google and Facebook, released a long-anticipated report on Thursday that recommends developing government limits on how private companies make use of the torrent of information they gather from their customers online.  Because the effort goes so far beyond information collected by intelligence agencies, the report was viewed warily in Silicon Valley, where companies see it as the start of a government effort to regulate how they can profit from the data they collect from email and web surfing habits.”

Footage clears woman, falsely arrested after police car crashed into her

Video footage from a nearby airport surveillance camera recently surfaced, showing that the officer caused the crash by failing to stop at a stop sign. Furthermore, the results of drug and alcohol tests administered at the hospital became available and confirmed Weyker’s sobriety at the time of the crash.  An internal investigation at the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office launched after the incident further vindicated Weyker. In a recorded interrogation, the officer admits that he was at fault for the accident.  Quiles has never officially been disciplined for misreporting the accident.”

The Latest Pot Myth, Smacked Down By Science

“Will the publication of this latest study put to rest the false notion that medical cannabis legalization stimulates non-medical pot use? Probably not, but it is a start. Notably, government officials seem finally to be getting the message. Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times last month, the deputy director of the US National Institute on Drug Abuse acknowledged, ‘We cannot draw a clean link between medical marijuana and shifting drug usage rates.’  He’s right and it’s high time for the likes of David Evans and Kevin Sabet to stop shamelessly claiming otherwise.”

Why Is The IRS Scared To Give Up The Rest of Lois Lerner’s Emails?

“Key members of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform expressed outrage at revelations made in newly released emails showing ex-IRS official Lois Lerner coordinating with the Department of Justice on prosecuting nonprofit groups.  One committee member said the emails prove why the IRS is ‘scared to give up the rest of Lois Lerner’s emails.’ IRS commissioner John Koskinen was recently threatened with contempt for stonewalling the committee’s investigation. Koskinen claimed in a hearing that it could take years to provide the documents requested by Oversight.”
