India To “Look Into” Easing Gold Price Controls

logo3

“Two weeks ago, gold jumped to a then-2014 high, following reports out of India that the head of India’s Congress Party, Sonia Gandhi was pushing the government to cut its duty on gold and other restrictions. Today, now that the upward move in gold has finally resumed, it appears that the nation with the world’s most draconian gold capital controls, is finally starting to crack under pressure from the people, as well as a surge in gold smuggling via illegal channels to unprecedented levels. Reuters reports that India ‘will look into relaxing gold imports curbs, but won’t let its current account deficit (CAD) balloon, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said on Monday.'”

Father Spends 11 Months In Jail, Sues LAPD for Murder Framing

“A 24-year-old father is suing Los Angeles police officers for allegedly framing him for murder and paying a homeless pair $10,000 to falsely testify against him at trial, according to a lawsuit.  Roy Galvan, who was acquitted by a jury, spent 13 months in county jail awaiting trial in the 2011 murder of a reputed gang member in South Los Angeles.  It accuses LAPD Officers Miguel Terrazas, David Nunn and Richard Arciniega of destroying evidence in the case, falsifying reports and bribing witnesses for statements, false arrest and malicious prosecution, among other claims of misconduct and civil rights violations.”

Officer admits she didn’t write down ‘snowball’ in weapons charge

“An NYPD officer admitted Wednesday that she didn’t note in an arrest report on five young Bronx men that the cop they allegedly attacked — transit Sgt. Adonis Ramirez — claimed he was hit with a snowball.   ‘No,’ Officer Paola Diaz answered when asked if the word ‘snowball’ appeared anywhere in the report charging the five with criminal possession of a weapon  Diaz also could not explain why she wrote that one of the suspects, Anthony Aquino, was also charged with disorderly conduct and harassment.  The charges against the five were later dropped.”

Cop sentenced to six years for fatally shooting ‘PBS NewsHour’ driver

“Prosecutors charged Patterson with first-degree murder, saying that after he and Dawkins got into a dispute on Lynhaven Drive, he left to retrieve his gun, returned and shot Dawkins. Witnesses testified that they saw Patterson leave after an initial confrontation.  In his testimony, Patterson said he left only to get handcuffs, mistakenly believing that he could detain Dawkins even though he was not in Arlington County and out of his jurisdiction.  Patterson said that when he returned, Dawkins charged at him with something in his hand. Investigators later found that Dawkins was intoxicated and carrying a knife, but the weapon was folded in his pocket during the shooting.”

Reuters Explains the Prevalence of Central Bank Money Printing

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“This Reuters article (somewhat surprisingly) makes a good point about central banking policy … that lying is part of necessary bank policy. It also makes a point we’ve been making for months now: While a good deal of discussion will focus on ‘tapering’ and other kinds of tightening, that’s probably not what is going to be happening in the near future.  We are living in a kind of parallel universe where officials create a narrative and the mainstream media covers it – but none of it is true. We will continue to read about money tightening but if you look closely there will always be contradictory indicators as there are currently. Little is real about this ‘recovery’ except the constant stimulation.”

Bill Bonner: Why the Fed’s ‘Taper’ Won’t Work

Bill-Bonner2

“The Fed had little choice. It has to pretend to go straight at least for a month or two more. Otherwise, it won’t have a shred of credibility left. And so far, so good. It looks like stocks will close the month of January down only 3%. Not catastrophic.  The Fed will continue attending its Counterfeiters Anonymous meetings – until the market really cracks. Then it will roll up its sleeves and get out the paper and ink. Janet Yellen will not want to preside over a crashing market any more than Ben Bernanke did.  Yes, the Fed has broken the US economy and its markets. Now, it owns them.  It can no longer permit the stock and bond markets to do what comes naturally to them – correct their mistakes.”

Forget Metadata … The NSA Is Spying On EVERYTHING

“The NSA’s spying on everyone’s metadata can tell them just about everything about us … and it violates our Constitutional right to freedom of association.  But people are getting distracted from the big picture by focusing on metadata.  As just one example, there is substantial evidence from top NSA and FBI whistleblowers that the government is recording the content of our calls and emails … word-for-word.  So what should we make of the government’s denials that it records content?  Given that the government has been caught lying about spying again and again, I’m not sure how much weight we should give to such denials.”

The worst state budget gimmicks of 2013

“State Budget Solutions has been keeping an eye on the bag of tricks employed by legislators and other budget officials. These budget gimmicks hide the true cost of government and set up states for fiscal calamity down the road. In 2013, not much has changed, though some states have attempted to fix gimmicks they employed in the past. Here are a few of the most ‘popular’ gimmicks (and even some solutions to the gimmicks) that we’ve come across in 2013.”

Visa CEO Says Traditional Payment Networks Trump Bitcoin

“Visa Inc. Chief Executive Officer Charlie Scharf said he’s more confident in traditional payment networks than in virtual currencies like Bitcoin.  ‘There are certainly some interesting things about Bitcoin and other things like it, but there are also a great deal of complexities,’ Scharf said today on a conference call to discuss quarterly results. Payments networks such as Foster City, California-based Visa are safer for consumers because of ‘the established network rules we have, the understanding of how things operate, understanding who the participants are, the fact that the business that we do has financial institutions on either side of the transaction.'”

White House refuses to accept that NSA phone dragnet is illegal

“In a new interview with MSNBC, Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that he had not read the new surveillance report from the Privacy and Civil Liberties Oversight Board (PCLOB)—but nonetheless disagreed with its findings. That report, which was released on Thursday by the Congressionally approved board, argued that the NSA’s telephone metadata program was illegal.  ‘At least 15 judges on about 35 occasions have said that the program itself is legal,’ Holder said. ‘I think that those other judges, those 15 judges, got it right.’  Holder and the White House have both expressed great skepticism at the PCLOB’s recommendations.”
