“Green Banks” Will Drown in the Red

“A state solvency report released by the Mercatus Center has each of these five states ranked in the bottom third of the country, with their solvency described as either ‘low’ or ‘poor.’  This all raises the question of whether these governments are able to find sound investment opportunities in the first place. Recently, though, there have been calls to extend the struggling green banking system to the federal level. Mark Muro and Reed Hundt at the Brookings Institute assert that demand for green banking institutions and the types of companies they finance is so strong that the existing state-based green banks cannot muster enough capital to meet demand.”

Fiat Chrysler CEO: Please don’t buy Fiat 500e electric car [2014]

“Fiat Chrysler Automobiles Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne has a request for potential buyers of the automaker’s Fiat 500e electric car: Don’t buy it. He’s tired of losing money.  Decrying the federal and state mandates that push manufacturers to build electric cars, Marchionne said he hoped to sell the minimum number of 500e cars possible.  Through April, the automaker sold 11,514 of the 500 cars in the United States this year, down about 15 percent from the same period last year. The company does not break out 500e sales. ‘I will sell the (minimum) of what I need to sell and not one more,’ Marchionne said of the 500e.

California to cap income eligibility for clean-vehicle rebates [2014]

“Nearly four-fifths of [California] rebates went to households earning $100,000 or more. Nearly half of those getting rebates for Tesla’s premium electric sedan earned at least $300,000.  With the state’s incentive program constantly running out of funds — about 13,500 buyers are on a waiting list to get their rebate — state lawmakers are now looking to get more of that money into the hands of lower-income drivers.  Proposed legislation underscores the dilemma the state faces in lowering tailpipe emissions in a traffic-choked state: how to nurture the development of expensive automotive technology without simply underwriting high-priced cars for the rich.”

Chevrolet discounts Spark EV: ‘Cheaper than phone bill’

“Chevrolet global marketing boss Tim Mahoney, briefing members of the Washington Automotive Press Association in Arlington, Va., Tuesday, wouldn’t say whether the car makes or loses money. Instead, he said its ‘ability to draw new customers to Chevrolet is a major consideration.’   Automakers are forced to take the losses to do business in states that require them to sell a certain number of ‘zero-local-emission’ vehicles. That’s a relatively new description, to acknowledge that the utility power plants generating electricity to recharge electrics do create emissions.”

Germany begs Sweden for more coal as renewable energy plan falters

“After 2011’s Fukushima disaster in Japan, Germany gave itself not much more than 10 years to close down all it nuclear power plants.  The country also has a roadmap to switch to renewable energy for 80% of its electricity needs by 2050. That may sound like a long time, but the clean energy installed base today only provides 23% of the European Nations power demand.  But the nuclear energy phase-out has meant that at the moment Germany is burning more coal now than it did 24 years ago.  And it’s desperate for more reports the FT, even begging the Swedes who are divesting from coal to do the opposite and expand their operations inside Germany.”

Pulp Fiction: The Broken Promises of Biofuels

“Despite optimistic federal mandates that required the addition of advanced biofuels to the fuel supply, commercialization has been slow to develop. Ethanol produced from cellulose was initially envisioned as a likely candidate for making a major contribution to the mandates, but project delays, overruns, and bankruptcy in the case of the first company to produce a qualifying batch of cellulosic ethanol have all tempered the initial enthusiasm. A different pathway called fast pyrolysis that results in drop-in fuels as the final product after upgrading has emerged as a contender, but this pathway has also struggled to gain a foothold.”

Shining the Spotlight on Solar Gains

“Asia accounts for nearly 90 percent of global production of solar PV modules, with China producing 67 percent of the world total. A recent Bloomberg News story noted that solar PV installations are expected to grow by as much as 29% this year, and by more than 50% over the next two years. This is expected to reverse a glut of solar PV manufacturing capacity that has persisted for the past two years. In fact, the solar PV industry is expecting a possible shortage of panels for the first time since 2006, which will benefit the bottom lines of the largest solar PV makers. In 2013, new capacity additions of solar PV surpassed wind power capacity additions for the first time in history.”

Germany’s Green Energy Revolution May Be on Verge of Failure

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“German officials and legislators created laws that ‘guaranteed a fixed feed-in tariff for 20 years, guaranteeing a fixed income’ for producers. Yet this guarantee was probably generated without doing a proper cost-benefit analysis. Now German taxpayers are stuck paying bills they cannot afford. Not only that, but Germany is closing coal and nuclear powered plants at an accelerated rate. And the new energy creation must be deployed via power lines that must either be built or upgraded. The result is that German consumers are facing ever higher energy bills, so much so that a rising percentage of Germans are choosing to have their power shut off rather than pay escalating fees.”

The EU Eats Itself

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“The dynamic at work in the EU is not one that can be halted. The rampant cronyism, destructive regulatory surge, economic dysfunction and industrial rot will only continue and expand. It is entrenched in the guts of the bureaucracy and embedded in the DNA of this entire surreptitious and misguided venture.  Eurocrats are now at a point where they are regulating how much power can be used by domestic appliances. Lord knows where Brussels goes from here. But not to a good place.  The EU is eating itself. Soon there will be nothing left – neither money nor moral justification.”

Vacuum sales rocket 44% as households scramble to buy before EU ban

“Online electrical retailer ao.com told This is Money it had its best ever day for vacuum cleaner sales last Friday as customers picked up a model with a power rating above 1,600 watts before they are outlawed by the EU. Sales were up 40 per cent last week on the same period last year.  Tesco also saw sales rocket by 44 per cent over the past two weeks as panicked customers rushed to get their hands on popular 2,000W models. The Cooperative Electrical shop reported a similar rise of 38 per cent.  Critics say cleaners satisfying the new rule may use less power, but householders will have to use them for longer so they are likely to use the same amount of electricity in the long run.”
