EPA sues Oklahoma utility for failing to estimate emissions that did not occur

wuwt_header91

“The EPA claims that OG&E failed to estimate emissions that did not occur. They are suing OG&E in an effort to force the company ‘to assess whether its projects were likely to result in a significant [GHG] emissions increase.’ The EPA had no authority to regulate GHG emissions when the work was done (2003 & 2006). The work (on boilers and turbine blade replacements) caused no emissions increase.”

Ontario slashes Samsung green energy deal by $3.7 billion

“The cuts will hit a controversial sole-source deal with a consortium led by South Korea-based Samsung Group that offered special financial incentives in a bid to attract investment in renewable energy. The province’s change of heart is partly a response to the backlash over that arrangement – which made electricity bills more expensive – as well as an acknowledgment that Samsung was having trouble holding up its end of the bargain.  It is also the latest sign of turbulence in the green-energy industry after the global recession reduced the need for power and an uncertain economy made less costly conventional electricity more attractive than pricey renewables.”

Richard Branson: Space tourism won’t hurt environment

“More than 500 people have already reserved seats — and paid deposits on the $200,000 ticket price — for a minutes-long suborbital flight on the SpaceShipTwo (SS2) set to begin by the end of this year. ‘We have reduced the (carbon emission) cost of somebody going into space from something like two weeks of New York’s electricity supply… to less than the cost of a economy round-trip from Singapore to London,’ Branson told reporters in Singapore.  The SS2′s lightweight carbon-fibre body will also ‘reduce fuel burn dramatically’, he said.”

Overcharge: 29 States Mandate High-Cost “Green” Power Generation

“Of the 50 states in the United States, 29 of them have state laws mandating renewable energy programs for local power generation plants. The trouble is, these alternative fuels are expensive. Natural gas costs have fallen by 70% since 2005. Fracking has made the difference. New supplies have lowered natural gas prices. This means that the 29 states are prohibited from buying low-cost, clean-burning natural gas. This raises the cost of electricity. In only 16 of these states have state legislators begun to discuss the possibility that these laws are economically foolish.”

Twelve States ask SCOTUS to challenge EPA on ‘clean air’ CO2 regulation

“Twelve States (Texas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, Michigan, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina and South Dakota) today filed a petition to have the Supreme Court review the D.C. Circuit’s decision not to strike down EPA’s climate regulations.  The States argue that the Congress never intended for the Clean Air Act to regulate greenhouse gases. The Clean Air Act was designed in 1970, in order to fight smog. The law’s tools and mechanisms are totally inappropriate for regulating greenhouse gas emissions, which are much more prevalent than the pollutants that cause smog.”

Climate Change: Key mission for the US Navy

“Not only is the Navy concerned about climate change, they are attempting to do something about it. Both the Navy and the Air Force have established goals to use a 50/50 blend of biofuel and petroleum-based fuel for planes and ships. Navy plans call for establishment of a ‘Green Strike Group’ task force by 2016, fueled by the biofuel blend, and for alternative fuels to power half of all energy consumption by 2020.  In 2011, the Navy and the Departments of Energy and Agriculture publically committed to invest $510 million to create an ‘advanced biofuel industry’ based on algae.”

European Union delays carbon tax for one year

“The EU will put its controversial carbon tax on intercontinental airline flights on hold for a year to give time for international talks to reach a compromise on the issue.  Almost all ICAO members have objected to the EU carbon tax on airline flights, which formally took effect in January 2012, saying it violated international law.  China even threatened reprisals against European aircraft maker Airbus. The US rejects the EU’s methodology which calculates the tax based on the entire flight, but could possibly accept basing it on the portion through European air space.  US airlines lost a complaint against the tax before the European Court of Justice.”

Obama May Levy Carbon Tax to Cut U.S. Deficit, HSBC Says

“Barack Obama may consider introducing a tax on carbon emissions to help cut the U.S. budget deficit after winning a second term as president, according to HSBC Holdings Plc. A tax starting at $20 a metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent and rising at about 6 percent a year could raise $154 billion by 2021, Nick Robins, an analyst at the bank in London, said today in an e-mailed research note, citing Congressional Research Service estimates.  In China, the world’s biggest emitter, greenhouse gases from fuel use rose more than 9 percent in 2011.”

State Department oversight of climate change spending abroad is a mess, watchdog reports

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/ice_melting.jpg

“According  to a State Department website, the U.S. has contributed some $5.1 billion in climate change funding to developing countries in 2010 and 2011 alone, with additional money still pouring forth in 2012. The audit report, issued last month by the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General (OIG), casts an unflattering spotlight on a relatively obscure branch of the State Department that supervises climate change spending, and depicts it as over-extended in its responsibilities, unstaffed in critical monitoring posts, and more concerned with spending money than in monitoring its effectiveness.”
