Why US government IT fails so hard, so often

“Over 50 percent of the federal workforce is over 48 years old—and nearly a quarter is within five years of retirement age. And the move to reliance on contractors for much of IT has drained the government of a younger generation of internal IT talent that might have a fresher eye toward what works in IT.  But even the most fresh and creative minds might go numb at the scale, scope, and structure forced on government IT projects by the way the government buys and builds things in accordance with ‘the FAR’—Federal Acquisition Regulations. If it isn’t a ‘program of record,’ government culture dictates, it seems it’s not worth doing.”

Campus Gun Free Zone Did Not Stop a Dangerous Gunman….Guns Did

“North Carolina Central University has a strict ‘No Gun’ policy on its campus for students and faculty.  This policy is supposed to be in place to keep everyone safe, because apparently the best way to keep someone safe is to make them defenseless. But Tuesday night an armed criminals ignored that policy and did not even stop to read those ‘gun free zone’ signs.  College students and faculty were not allowed to defend themselves, so it’s a good thing the good guys with the guns showed up to take the dangerous criminals out.”

NJ Causes Bridge Jam With Unannounced Lane Closures For ‘Study’

“Police and elected officials in Fort Lee, N.J., say they weren’t given warning that the Port Authority planned to reduce the number of local access lanes directly from Fort Lee to the bridge from three to one—causing traffic to back up in the borough—and are still puzzled by the official explanation that the agency was conducting a study of traffic patterns. After the two local lanes handling Fort Lee traffic were closed, cars and trucks quickly clogged streets used by local travelers to reach the bridge and New York City. Local officials said the backup led to long delays for Fort Lee buses traveling for the first day of school Monday.”

Arkansas mayor fires rifle seized by police, shattering city hall window

“An Arkansas mayor admitted this week that he had accidentally fired a rifle inside city hall, shattering a window.  Flippin James ‘J.J.’ Hudson told the Baxter Bulletin that nine days after he fired the rifle that had been seized by police, the incident had been ‘all been taken care of; it’s all been cleaned up.’  ‘I’m not going to have any further comment on it,’ he said.  But according to the paper, the shards of glass could still be seen over the entrance of city hall and the window had still not been repaired.”

Massive anti-government protest gears up in Poland

“Tens of thousands of Polish trade unionists kicked off a march through the capital on Saturday in the finale of a four-day protest against the unpopular and increasingly fragile centre-right government.  The protest reflects widespread public gloom over this year’s sharp economic slowdown in Poland, which has been dragged down by the eurozone crisis.  Their anger is centred on recent labour and pension changes.  ‘We want pensions at the age of 65 as before and not at the age of 67 as Tusk’s reform would have it. We want better social policy and guarantees for employees,’ Lewandowski said.  The union is also calling for a higher minimum wage and improved job security.”

With the end of Fed’s QE in sight, U.S. public says ‘Huh?’

“The Fed’s $2.8 trillion ‘quantitative easing’ program has, among other things, lifted stock prices to record highs, driven interest rates to record lows and put a floor under what had been a reeling housing market.  Yet barely a quarter of Americans even know what it is. A poll leading up to the Fed’s pivotal decision, expected Wednesday afternoon, found just 27 percent of U.S. adults could pick the correct definition of quantitative easing from among five possible answers.”

Brazil hackers accidentally attack NASA as payback for NSA surveillance

“Hackers have hit back in retaliation for US cyber-spying on Brazil but mistook the US space agency NASA for the National Security Agency (NSA), a news website reported here Tuesday.  ‘Some activists decided to protest this US practice but it seems that they picked the wrong target,’ a specialized blog of the Brazilian news portal Uol said.  ‘They hacked NASA’s web page and left the message: Stop spying on us,’ it said.  The hackers’ message also called on the United States not to attack Syria.  A NASA spokesman confirmed that a Brazilian hacker group last week posted a political message on a number of NASA websites.”

Controversial Florida pastor Terry Jones arrested for kerosene-soaked Korans

“A controversial Florida pastor was arrested before he planned to burn almost 3,000 copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, US media reported. Terry Jones, 61, was detained in the town of Mulberry, near Tampa, and faces charges of transporting fuel illegally and openly carrying a firearm, the Orlando Sentinel said. Deputies said Jones was riding in a pickup truck that was towing a trailer carrying a large barbecue-like grill filled with kerosene-soaked Korans. According to Jones’s website, he had plans to burn 2,998 Korans in the Tampa Bay area on Wednesday, in recognition of victims of the September 11, 2001 attacks.”

Can We Pay a Minimum Wage That Makes Everyone Rich?

“More people — an increase in the supply of labor — want to work at McDonald’s at a rate of $15 an hour than $7.25. That leads to an influx of workers into the labor force and higher unemployment as new entrants fail to find a job.  The road to a higher-paying job goes through education, training for the jobs of tomorrow, and incentives such as the earned income tax credit, not through the imposition of a floor on wages.  So the next time someone tells you that the U.S. needs to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour, ask him what’s so special about $15. Why not raise it to $50, or $100, and make everyone rich?”

Child shoots SWAT officer with his own gun at California ‘Literacy Fair’

“A child who was thought to be no older than 8-years-old shot a SWAT officer with his service weapon at a literacy fair in California last week while he was showing off tactical equipment to kids.  Lodi Police Chief Mark Helms told KMAX that the incident took place at the ‘2013 Literacy Fair: Little Buckaroos Reading Roundup’ on Aug. 24. Helms said that SWAT Officer Robert Rench was in a SWAT vehicle demonstrating equipment to children when a boy, between 6 and 8 years old, walked up behind him and fired his holstered Glock .40 caliber service weapon into his leg.  Police were also searching for the identity of the boy, who ran from the scene after the gun discharged.”
