Civil Libertarians Appalled by Tsarnaev Manhunt, Boston Residents Thrilled

“Boston-based civil liberties attorney Harvey Silverglate told Reason.com he is very troubled by the measures taken by law enforcement officials during the manhunt for alleged Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. His views contrasted greatly with what this reporter came across during dozens of man-on-the-street interviews conducted across the greater Boston area last week, where residents voiced overwhelming support for the actions of local, state, and federal officials.”

Sen. Chambliss: ‘We can’t just leave event security to communities’

“Chambliss did say that security around the country would have to change for large public events, including greater involvement by the federal government.  ‘This was a soft target. It was not a target that was able to be totally protected,’ he said. ‘This particular incident is going to cause the administration and Congress to evaluate our overall security programs around the country, particularly for major events. We can’t leave it just to the communities that host these events to provide the security.'”

World landmarks go dark for Earth Hour

“The Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and the Kremlin—along with a slew of other landmarks around the world—went dark to draw attention to climate change.  In a symbolic show of support for the planet, people across the continents switched off their lights for 60 minutes—all at 8:30 pm local time—to make ‘Earth Hour.’  In bustling New York, that’s exactly what happened when the Empire State Building pulled the plug on its nighttime brilliance.  In Paris, the city of light, the Eiffel Tower turned off its illumination—but only for five minutes due to security reasons.”

Backfire on Obama — Gun Control

“How serious are Americans about buying guns? Enough to apply for a background check to buy one.  How many Americans have applied for a background check since the day Obama was inaugurated?  Go on. Guess.  The answer: over 70 million.  Think about this. Over 70 million adult Americans went to the trouble of identifying themselves as gun owners.  This sends a message to Congress: ‘Don’t mess with our guns.’  This sends a message to gun control advocates: ‘You haven’t got the votes.’  Talk about futility. Gun controllers say that they represent the true feelings of Americans on guns. But where is their evidence?”

Gun Control in Connecticut Is a Bonanza for Gun Sellers Outside of Connecticut.

“This sends a message to the world outside of New York, Illinois, Connecticut, and California: buy while you still can.  Buy at gun shows.  Pay a little more. Get off your duff.  Is gun control coming? No. Then why buy? Because newcomers think gun control is coming. Prices will go up. The mania will spread. This is not a bubble market. This is the new normal.  The liberals want gun control. They are not going to get it in heartland America.  What they are getting is the opposite of what they say they want: a new dedication to buy guns and ammo is spreading like a prairie fire across the nation.”

Lead Sponsor Of Federal High Capacity Ban Was Unaware Magazines Could Be Reloaded

Lead Sponsor Of Federal High Capacity Ban Was Unaware Magazines Could Be Reloaded

“CO Rep. Diana DeGette (D) didn’t seem to understand the obvious basics of how firearms work, all the while being a lead sponsor on a federal ban of high-capacity magazines. As you can see in the video above, the Congresswomen seems to think magazines and ammunition are somehow one and the same and that after their initial use will no longer exist.  Responding to a citizens question about what he is to do now that he is at a disadvantage for having to change magazines, DeGette stated with a condescending smirk, ‘The good news for you, you live in Denver. The [Denver Police Department] would be there within minutes.'”

Democrats push for $10K fine for gun owners without liability insurance

“A group of congressional Democrats has signed on to new legislation that would mandate liability insurance for all gun owners in the United States — and fine those who refuse to purchase it as much as $10,000.  The Daily Caller reports that New York Rep. Carolyn Maloney’s Firearm Risk Protection Act says that all gun buyers — before they buy — purchase and show proof of ‘a qualified liability insurance policy,’ and that those caught owning a weapon without the insurance are subject to harsh fines.”

Fast food workers stage surprise strike in New York City

“The coalition of striking workers includes employees of McDonald’s, Wendy’s, Pizza Hut, KFC and other major chains, as well as community and clergy groups dedicated to improving the lives of low-wage workers in the mostly non-unionized field of restaurant work.  One of the main organizing groups behind the strike told CNN that dozens of workers walked off the job at the Times Square McDonald’s and that the Flatbush Avenue Burger King in Brooklyn barely opened its doors on time Thursday morning.  The workers are asking for a minimum pay of $15 an hour and the right to organize and collectively bargain without fear of firing or retaliation.”

Commentator Donna Brazile Gets Obamanized (Note: Very Painful)

“Donna Brazile, apologist for everything Obama, syndicated columnist, television political commentator on CNN and ABC, is bitching about her soaring healthcare insurance premium. She doesn’t know why it is going up. I’ve covered some of the why here and here, but the short and long answer is Obamacare.  Below is her ‘health care works’ cheering on of ACA via a tweet last year, underneath that is a tweet from her today where she is bitching about her healthcare premium climbing and not getting a good answer as to why  it is going up. She still doesn’t seem to get that she has been Obamanized.”

Most Consumer Complaints Come From Boca Raton, Upper West Side

“When U.S. officials began collecting consumer complaints about credit cards, one goal was to identify patterns that could help them write rules protecting families with low and moderate incomes.  Nearly two years later, it’s the well-to-do neighborhoods of Florida and New York that are supplying the most grievances to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, an analysis of agency data shows. Almost 60 percent of complaints originated in zip codes where the median household income is higher than the national median of $52,762, according to the analysis.”
