LAPD takes aim at wave of Asian ‘maternity tourists’

“Something is happening in the suburbs of Los Angeles.  Nearby, a string of so-called ‘maternity hotels,’ where Asian women — often Chinese and Taiwanese — come to give birth to babies who will automatically acquire a US passport — has recently drawn the attention of authorities.  There is nothing illegal about foreign women giving birth in the United States. But federal officials are investigating possible related crimes, while local officials say planning regulations may have been violated.”

Arizona Politician Parodied By Fake Twitter Accounts Pushes Bill To Make Online Impersonation A Felony

“Arizona State Representative Michelle Ugenti has proposed a bill that would make it a class 5 felony to impersonate someone online ‘with the intent to harm, defraud, intimidate or threaten.’ That last part, obviously, limits the purely parodical accounts, but the definitions of those words could be quite broad, and the risk of an overly broad interpretation is quite real. Considering that class 5 felonies in Arizona come with a ‘presumptive sentence of a year and a half imprisonment,’ you would hope that the definitions here would be a lot clearer.”

Hollande warns on euro strength, denounces markets for currencies

“Francois Hollande has issued a clear warning that the current strength of the euro could damage the fragile economic recovery in Europe, calling for international action to stem currency distortions.  ‘The euro should not fluctuate according to the mood of the markets,’ the French president told the European parliament in Strasbourg. ‘A monetary zone must have an exchange rate policy. If not, it will be subjected to an exchange rate that does not reflect the real state of the economy.'”

Commodities: High metal prices can put lives in danger

“High prices for scrap metal has resulted in more than cultural vandalism such as the theft of a £500,000 Barbara Hepworth statute from Dulwich Park – it is putting innocent people’s lives in danger.  Last month, 80 operations, including eight for people with cancer, were cancelled at Llandough Hospital in Wales after 100m of cabling was stolen from a generator. Eight people have been killed trying to steal copper from electricity substations in the last year alone.  The fact that there is a significant cash element makes metal theft an easy option for criminals – and it robs the Treasury of significant revenues.”

Bernanke Is Blind As A Bat

“Following the stock market crash of 1929, there was a short period of calm before the government and Fed would deliver a Great Depression. During that short period of calm, the establishment and authorities did their best to assure everyone that things were ok. I don’t doubt that they even believed what they were saying. Here are some examples of what was said during the calm period.”

Massive espionage malware targeting governments undetected for 5 years

“Researchers have uncovered an ongoing, large-scale computer espionage network that’s targeting hundreds of diplomatic, governmental, and scientific organizations in at least 39 countries, including the Russian Federation, Iran, and the United States.  Operation Red October, as researchers from antivirus provider Kaspersky Lab have dubbed the highly coordinated campaign, has been active since 2007, raising the possibility it has already siphoned up hundreds of terabytes of sensitive information.  The main purpose of the campaign is to gather classified information and geopolitical intelligence.”

Confused professors shocked schools are cutting their hours to avoid Obamacare penalties

“Robert Balla, an adjunct professor of English at Stark State College, in North Canton, Ohio received a letter in which he was told that ‘in order to avoid penalties under the Affordable Care Act…employees with part-time or adjunct status will not be assigned more than an average of 29 hours per week.’ He told the Journal that the move cut his $40,000 salary by about $2,000 and that he cannot afford health insurance.  ‘I think it goes against the spirit of the [health-care] law,’ Mr. Balla said. ‘In education, we’re working for the public good, we are public employees at a public institution; we should be the first ones to uphold the law, to set the example.'”

Gun Owners Boycott a Huge Outdoors Show. Show Shuts Down.

“The annual Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show normally attracts 200,000 visitors. It earns money from 1,000 exhibitors.  Last week the  British firm that owns it decided to ban all visible references to assault weapons, so called. No sales, no advertising, nothing.  A boycott began. The NRA canceled. Then hundreds of exhibitors canceled. There were lots of stories about the boycott, as you can see here.  The politically correct Brits who thought they would jump on the gun control bandwagon have announced that there will be no show . No show, indeed!  Here is the official announcement. This will cost the company a pile of money.”
