NCBI is an NIH.gov electronic search engine that allows the public to instantly read the abstracts of hundreds of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers on virtually any subject, including an estimated 20,000 papers on cannabis alone.  So why then does the head of the National Institutes of Health purport to know so little about the science of pot?”

Police Chief, Citing Joke Site: ‘Legal Pot Killed 37 People On First Day’

“Testifying against marijuana legalization before the Maryland legislature today, Annapolis Police Chief Michael Pristoop warned of the potentially lethal consequences. ‘The first day of legalization, that’s when Colorado experienced 37 deaths that day from overdose on marijuana,’ Pristoop told the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. ‘I remember the first day it was decriminalized there were 37 deaths.’  As Sen. Jamie Raskin (D-Montgomery) quickly pointed out, what Pristoop actually remembered was a joke story at The Daily Currant.”

Hundreds of nonsense articles found in peer-reviewed science journals

“Two major science publishers, Springer and IEEE, are in the process of removing more than 120 published studies from their databases after they were discovered to be SCIgen-generated nonsense.  Eric Merkel-Sobotta at Springer Science and Business Media told the Star the company had been alerted to 16 allegedly fake articles two weeks ago, and has been working ever since to confirm the claims. Springer publishes over 2,000 journals.  All the papers appeared in peer-reviewed conference proceedings, Merkel-Sobotta said. All the supposed authors had Chinese names, but it’s still not clear whether any or all of them are fake.”

Weather seems to blame for U.S. slowdown, Fed’s Yellen says

“Unusually harsh winter weather appears to be behind recent signs of weakness in the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Thursday, suggesting the central bank was poised to press forward in ratcheting back its stimulus.  Testifying to the Senate Banking Committee, Yellen said the Fed would watch carefully to ensure weather was indeed the culprit, but she reiterated that it would take a ‘significant change’ to the economy’s prospects for the Fed to put plans to wind down its bond-buying program on hold.  The world’s largest economy added fewer than 200,000 jobs combined in December and January, well below expectations.”

He’s now calling for Bitcoin to be banned in the US with a letter to Treasury Secretary Jack Lew and Fed Chair Janet Yellen. But what’s incredible in his letter is how… simply wrong he is about nearly everything regarding the cryptocurrency.”

PayPal Starts Cracking Down On Bitcoin

“In a strange move, online payments provider PayPal has started banning accounts of people who sell anything Bitcoin related using its payment gateway, according to a post on BitcoinTalk. In this particular case however, there was no actual transfer of Bitcoin involved. A BitcoinTalk member sold Casascius coins, physical coins that can be used to store Bitcoins, on eBay. Casascius no longer come with Bitcoin stored in them after US Treasury Department action in December 2013. The seller tried to point out that he was only selling items which eBay, the parent company of PayPal, had permitted him to.”

Apple purges ‘last remaining’ Bitcoin trading app from App Store

“Apple has slowly been pulling Bitcoin trading apps from the App Store, and yesterday it removed an app that claims to have been the ‘last remaining’ one. Blockchain, which says its self-titled app has been in the store for two years, has written a scathing harangue on its blog criticizing Apple for the removal of apps that allow users to trade bitcoins.  Blockchain suggests that Bitcoin threatens large corporations’ control over existing payment systems and could stymie the success of services like Google Wallet. Apple doesn’t currently operate such a service, though there have been hints that it is beginning to create one.”

UK porn filter blocks League of Legends update for ‘sex’ in file name

“The anti-pornography firewall run by the UK’s four top internet providers has blocked the latest League of Legends update because it happens to contain the letters ‘s,’ ‘e’ and ‘x’ in a row in two of its file names, The Guardian reports. The filter dings the following two files, forcing the update to fail with a ‘file not found’ error (emphasis added): XerathMageChainsExtended.luaobj VarusExpirationTimer.luaobj.  The Guardian says that the only recourse for those affected is to contact their internet providers and switch off the filter. The firewall is a new program and this problem should be contained to anyone who has signed up for a new ISP this month only.”
