Transformation of North San Jose into urban tech hub under way

“City officials envision thousands of new housing units, millions of square feet of new office and research spaces and additional retail, restaurants and recreation spaces — all served by BART and light rail.  After nearly 10 years of planning and preparation, the first steps of the transformation of 5,000 acres in North San Jose are coming into view. The city’s economic development staff estimates that $2.8 billion worth of new projects are underway there or about to start.  To encourage more projects and corporate expansions in North San Jose, city officials have slashed development fees, cut red tape for developers and are allowing higher density than was previously permitted.”

‘Six Californias’ plan doable, could be on November ballot

Tim Draper, the multimillionaire Silicon Valley venture capitalist behind the proposal, said he was encouraged by the California legislative analyst’s report, declaring that dividing the nation’s largest state is ‘clearly legal and doable.’  ‘It is obvious that we need a breath of fresh air in California government, and creating six new states allows the refresh we need,’ Mr. Draper said in an email after the study was made public over the weekend. The report notes that congressional approval would be required even if California voters support the amendment. Organizers are working to gather the 1 million signatures needed to place the measure on the November ballot.”

Bitcoin Declared ‘Lawful Money’ in California Assembly

“The California State Assembly has unanimously passed measure AB 129 declaring Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as ‘lawful money.’  To be clear, ‘lawful money’ is different from ‘legal tender.’ ‘Lawful money’ describes any currency that is legal to use in exchange for goods and services, but is not required to be accepted for debts, taxes, or any other dues.  Before the passing of measure AB 129, Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies were not deemed ‘lawful money.’ In the state of California, it is against the law to issue or circulate any currency that is not ‘lawful money,’ and doing so can result in fines up to $15,000 or 15 years imprisonment.”

Smith & Wesson Ends Most CA Sales Due to Microstamping Regulation

“On January 22nd renowned gun maker Smith & Wesson joined Sturm, Ruger, & Co., by announcing it would cease California sales of its semi-automatic pistols due to microstamping requirements that went into effect last year.  Microstamping is a requirement that each firearm be fitted with a special firing pin that leaves a fingerprint on a bullet casing.  The cost of doing this would be passed on to consumers in higher prices. Moreover, the result of doing this would be yet another gun registry.  On top of these things, microstamping doesn’t even work–and least not all the time. There are proven problems with the durability of microstamps on firing pins.”

Bitcoin billboards preach to the masses in San Francisco Bay Area

“‘What we’re trying to do is help promote Bitcoin,’ David Miller told Ars.  He’s one of the four co-founders of the project. Professionally, he is an infrastructure manager for Weltman, Weinberg & Reis, a law firm in Cleveland, Ohio.  ‘There’s four of us,’ he added. ‘We’ve been fans of bitcoins for a couple of years. We’re trying to create a public awareness campaign. To create a bridge between the general public and the miners. They may have heard it in passing or they may have no idea what it is.’  Placement of the signs has elicited strong reactions from both the tech and non-tech communities in the Bay Area, and as it stands, tensions between the two communities have been high.”

California Chefs, Bartenders Now Forced To Wear Gloves

“Chefs and bartenders in California are aghast over a new law that prevents them from touching the food they will serve to customers. The new law, which took effect on January 1, is part of the California Retail Food Code.  State food handling regulations previously required foodservice employees to ‘minimize bare hand and arm contact with non-prepackaged food that is in a ready-to-eat-form[.]’  The new law ‘instead requires food employees to minimize bard (sic) hand and arm contact with exposed food that is not in a ready-to-eat form.’ The ‘ready-to-eat’ terminology means ‘food that is edible without additional preparation to achieve food safety.'”

U. of California extends smoking ban to e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco

“Just weeks after instituting new smoking rules that allowed electronic cigarettes at the University of California, Irvine, campus officials have reversed themselves and banned the nicotine-vapor devices.  University spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon tells the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/JYBxaK ) that the revised rules bring Irvine into alignment with system-wide UC regulations that prohibit the use of all nicotine products. Each of UC’s nine other campuses banned all smoking as of Jan. 1, plus e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco.”

California Considers Banning Online Tobacco, E-Cigarette Sales

“Online sales of electronic cigarettes and tobacco could be banned under a bill introduced by lawmakers on Monday.  Claiming kids and teens have easy access to tobacco and electronic cigarettes, Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) is introducing a bill blocking people from buying both on the Web.  ‘We need to do more to protect our children from a tobacco addiction and a lifetime of health-related problems,’ he said. ‘E-cigarettes are very much an emergency trend, and they are being marketed very closely to children and teens,’ said Kori Titus with Breathe California.  Since the health risks are still being studied, Titus believes they should not fall into the hands of children.”
