US Sends Troops to Chad on Nigerian Schoolgirl Hunt

“President Obama has informed Congress today that approximately 80 troops have been sent to Chad in a ‘support’ capacity to take part in the search for 276 kidnapped Nigerian schoolgirls.  The troops, mostly Air Force personnel, will handle surveillance flights and drone flights over the area along the Chad-Nigeria border, where the girls are believed to be held.  The Predator drones are now being flown out of the Chad capital of N’Djamena, and officials say the troops maintaining those drones will remain until the kidnapping situation is resolved.  US flights have been scanning the area for 10 days, and have provided no details on what, if anything, they’ve found during that time.”

Missouri to fire deafening ‘sound cannons’ at drivers to deter speeding

“Missouri’s Department of Transportation is preparing to deploy the LRAD sound cannon  that’s been used to break up mass gatherings like Occupy Wall Street to warn motorists that they’re going too fast. The device emits a targeted, deafening siren that ‘easily penetrates the windshield and well-insulated cab of a car, even overriding the vehicle’s engine sounds and a radio turned up loud enough to jam to tunes at highway speeds.’  Missouri has committed to the technology by purchasing two of the pricey devices.  LRAD’s sirens can reach up to 153 decibels, more than enough to potentially cause hearing damage. This is technology that’s been deployed in war zones, after all.”

First Person Charged, Guns Seized Under Conn. Gun Registration Law

“Police arrested a 65-year-old man in Milford, Conn., after he allegedly shot a squirrel in his yard. Upon further investigation, officers recovered an unregistered ‘assault rifle’ and three ‘large-capacity magazines.’  Now James Toigo faces a plethora of gun-related charges, including unlawful discharge of a firearm, cruelty to an animal, first-degree reckless endangerment, second-degree breach of peace, failure to register an assault rifle and three counts of possessing large-capacity magazines.  The firearm used to shoot the squirrel was not the semi-automatic rifle that police later confiscated. Officers also seized ‘several’ other guns, even though they were not used in a crime and were legal.”

US Begins Verifying Passports On Departing International Flights

“The US government is using the Malaysian Airlines flight 370 to tackle the ‘widespread lack of passport screening in all countries.’ The US is stepping up their processes. Already each passport of incoming visitors to the US is screened through multiple databases. After flight 370 disappeared, the US has started this process for all outgoing passengers.  ‘Coupled with this information and the new abilities to act on that information definitely makes air travel a lot safer,’ according to one government official.  For nearly any random reason an individual can be denied his or her right to travel by the US bureaucracy, and it happens way more than you think.”

Ukraine’s Largest Bank Limits Cash Withdrawals To $100 Daily

logo2

“The military escalation in Ukraine has had dire consequences for the financial state of the country, its banks, and ultimately its people. The central bank promised to rescue domestic banks so long as they agreed to its complete control and it appears the first consequences of that ‘we are here to help you’ promise is coming true. Privatbank is Ukraine’s largest bank and while claiming this move is temporary (just like Cyprus’ capital controls), the bank has also ceased new loans amid what it calls ‘geopolitical instability’. In summary, you can’t have your money back! Expect long angry lines at Ukrainian banks on Monday morning.”

New exchange leaves Bitcoin regulation up to Wall Street bankers

“Mere hours after the Japan-based Mt. Gox seemingly vanished from the Internet, a new exchange was unexpectedly announced. SecondMarket, an alternative online marketplace currently operating the world’s largest Bitcoin investment vehicle, declared its intention to introduce a fully regulated Bitcoin trading hub. The decision to announce, according to founder and CEO Barry Silbert, was directly influenced by the turmoil surrounding Mt. Gox.  The new company will reportedly be governed by regulators and major banks, will provide clearing services, and include a self-regulatory organization, similar to the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA).”

Weather seems to blame for U.S. slowdown, Fed’s Yellen says

“Unusually harsh winter weather appears to be behind recent signs of weakness in the U.S. economy, Federal Reserve Chair Janet Yellen said on Thursday, suggesting the central bank was poised to press forward in ratcheting back its stimulus.  Testifying to the Senate Banking Committee, Yellen said the Fed would watch carefully to ensure weather was indeed the culprit, but she reiterated that it would take a ‘significant change’ to the economy’s prospects for the Fed to put plans to wind down its bond-buying program on hold.  The world’s largest economy added fewer than 200,000 jobs combined in December and January, well below expectations.”

Japan says any bitcoin regulation should be international

“Any regulation of the bitcoin crypto-currency should involve international cooperation to avoid loopholes, Japanese vice finance minister Jiro Aichi said on Thursday.  Commenting on the closure this week of Tokyo-based Mt. Gox, once the world’s biggest exchange for the bitcoin virtual currency, Aichi said the ministry would respond to the problems ‘if necessary’, after finding out exactly what happened.  ‘It’s not just the Ministry of Finance; many other agencies are related,’ Aichi told a news conference. ‘As for its legal position, a currency (under Japan’s jurisdiction) would be coins or notes issued by the Bank of Japan. At the very least, we can say bitcoin is not a currency.'”

Ukraine PM says $37 billion went missing under Yanukovich

“Ukraine’s new prime minister said on Thursday loans worth $37 billion had gone missing from state coffers during ousted President Viktor Yanukovich’s rule, and warned that unpopular measures were needed to salvage the economy.  In addition to the missing $37 billion, Yatseniuk said as much as $70 billion had been sent out of the country during Yanukovich’s three-year rule, although he did not make clear how much of this capital flight was illegal.  ‘I want to report to you – the state treasury has been robbed and is empty,’ he said before the national assembly voted him in as head of a national unity government.”

EU sees personal savings used to plug long-term financing gap

“The savings of the European Union’s 500 million citizens could be used to fund long-term investments to boost the economy and help plug the gap left by banks since the financial crisis, an EU document says.  ‘The economic and financial crisis has impaired the ability of the financial sector to channel funds to the real economy, in particular long-term investment,’ said the document, seen by Reuters.  The Commission will ask the bloc’s insurance watchdog in the second half of this year for advice on a possible draft law ‘to mobilize more personal pension savings for long-term financing’, the document said.”
