U.S. Will Simulate a Knockout Blow of Electric Power Grid This November

“Thousands of utility workers, business executives, National Guard officers, F.B.I. antiterrorism experts and officials in the U.S., Canada and Mexico are preparing for an emergency drill in November that will simulate physical attacks and cyberattacks that could take down large sections of the power grid.  They will practice for a crisis unlike anything the real grid has ever seen, and more than 150 companies and organizations have signed up to participate.  The utility industry argues that the government has extensive information on threats but keeps it classified. Government officials concede the problem, and they have suggested that some utility executives get security clearances.”

No trace of Sandy Hook Elementary School will be left

“The public can’t see the demolition of Sandy Hook Elementary School. The school is hidden behind a fence.  But the sounds of dismantling go on all day.  The scene where 20 children and six educators were gunned down nearly a year ago is disappearing. Within two weeks, a vacant lot will be in its place.  Pulverizing the building’s remains ensures no one ever has a souvenir of the building, not even a brick or a doorknob. To make sure nothing finds its way into the hands of a collector, the town is taking extra steps to track every piece of building material that leaves the site. It will have a manifest of every piece of steel and a guarantee that it will be taken to a foundry and smelted.”

TSA Union President Wants Arrest Powers For TSA Officers

“A gunman opened fire on Friday at a Transportation Security Administration checkpoint at LAX, killing a TSA officer. The suspect was eventually shot and taken into custody, police said. The slain officer was the first TSA employee killed in the line of duty, according to J. David Cox Sr, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, a union that represents many TSA workers. Asked what could be done to improve security at the airport, Cox said he would like ‘our officers to be able to make arrests. That would be a big improvement if they had arrest power.’ Instead, they have to turn to local law enforcement when assaulted.”

Canadian gov’t: Private ATMs vulnerable to money-laundering

“A CBC/Radio-Canada investigation has uncovered methods organized crime may be using to launder money through privately owned automated tellers, or ATMs. There are almost 38,000 of the ATMs, also known as ‘white label’ cash machines because they are not bank-owned, scattered across the country — nearly double the number of bank-owned ATMs. It is a growing, lucrative industry. Placed in hotel lobbies, bars and food courts, they provide quick access to cash, albeit with an annoying surcharge. But experts believe some machines may have a more nefarious role.”

NSA pushed 9/11 as key ‘sound bite’ to justify surveillance

“The National Security Agency advised its officials to cite the 9/11 attacks as justification for its mass surveillance activities, according to a master list of NSA talking points.  The document, obtained by Al Jazeera through a Freedom of Information Act request, contains talking points and suggested statements for NSA officials (PDF) responding to the fallout from media revelations that originated with former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. Invoking the events of 9/11 to justify the controversial NSA programs, which have caused major diplomatic fallout around the world, was the top item on the talking points that agency officials were encouraged to use.”

What Government Schools Can Teach Us About Government Health Care

Yet this is the argument made by single-payer health care boosters, with the word “doctors” implicitly substituted for ‘teachers.’ The Economic Policy Institute (EPI), for example, has published several studies arguing that public school teachers are somehow paid below-market levels and that this has dire consequences for classroom learning. But the EPI also touts its public health insurance plan, which would use ‘concentrated purchasing power’ to force provider prices below market levels. In other words, underpaying teachers is bad, but underpaying doctors is good.”
