France’s interior minister says Syria militants pose national security threat

“France’s interior minister revealed Thursday that hundreds of homegrown Islamist militants were signing up to fight in Syria and warned they could pose a security threat when they come back.  More than 300 French nationals or residents are either currently fighting in Syria’s civil war, planning to go and fight or have recently returned from there, the minister, Manuel Valls, told France Inter radio.  Most of them were young men, often with a delinquent past, who had become radicalised, he said. ‘This is a phenomenon which worries me because they represent a potential danger when they return to our soil,’ Valls said. ‘We have to be extremely attentive.'”

Journalism professor says he hopes for murder of NRA members’ children

“A journalism professor at the University of Kansas (KU) turned to Twitter on Monday to suggest he would like to see the murder of children of National Rifle Association (NRA) members at the hands of a deranged gunman.  A journalism professor has defended tweets he sent out which called for the death of NRA employees children. ‘#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA,’ tweeted David Guth, who is an associate professor of Journalism at the university’s William Allen White School of Journalism.  ‘Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters, he continued. “Shame on you. May God damn you.'”

Jon Stewart Rips CNN Apart for Confusing, Frenzied Shooting Coverage

“Jon Stewart opened Tuesday night’s Daily Show with a powerful indictment of how cable news covered the Washington Navy Yard shooting, aimed squarely at the ‘breathless wrongness’ of CNN. Stewart spent not one, but two whole segments mercilessly tearing CNN apart for how awfully it covered the shooting, especially all the unnecessary speculation. Stewart yelled at one CNN reporter, ‘You’re just standing in front of a camera naming shit you see!’ and likened it to ‘walking down the street with a five-year-old.’ He ran the gamut from one anchor demanding to know the size of a building to another asking about the clothes someone who may have been the suspect possibly wore.”

Apparently, SWAT teams are reserved for low-risk drug raids and killing 107-year-old men armed with pistols, rather than for responding to actual danger.”

Like Columbine killer Eric Harris, Holmes had been taking Zoloft, another SSRI drug linked with violent outbursts.”

Navy Yard: SWAT team ordered to ‘stand down’ during mass shooting

“One of the first teams of heavily armed police to respond to Monday’s shooting in Washington DC was ordered to stand down by superiors, the BBC can reveal. A tactical response team of the Capitol Police, a force that guards the US Capitol complex, was told to leave the scene by a supervisor instead of aiding municipal officers. The Capitol Police department has launched a review into the matter. Aaron Alexis, 34, killed 12 people at the Washington Navy Yard. ‘I don’t think it’s a far stretch to say that some lives may have been saved if we were allowed to intervene,’ a Capitol Police source familiar with the incident told the BBC.”

Using a new modelling tool and more comprehensive indicators, researchers were able to map the flow of raw materials across the world economy with unprecedented accuracy to determine the true ‘material footprint’ of 186 countries over a two-decade period (from 1990 to 2008). The study was published today in the US journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. It reveals that the decoupling of natural resources from economic growth has been exaggerated.”
