Congress adds contested cybersecurity measures to ‘must-pass’ spending bill

“Congress added some of the most controversial parts of the latest cybersecurity bill to its gigantic end-of-year ‘must-pass’ omnibus spending package, including mandatory sharing of any consumer data it collects with the Internal Revenue Service, FBI and the National Security Agency.  Civil liberties experts said they were dismayed that Congress had used the late-night bill to pass some of the most invasive parts of the Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act (Cisa).  Language that would have prevented consumer financial data from being shared directly with the NSA, for example, is not in the final version of the bill.”

“Emergency” Measures May Be Written Into the French Constitution

“The state of emergency, which was initially supposed to mitigate the threat posed by Islamic terrorism, has been used to target environmental and political activists who have nothing to do with radical Islam, let alone terrorism.  Rather than be regarded as a temporary measure for extraordinary circumstances, the government’s ability to declare an extended state of emergency may soon be written into the constitution.  The first measure would write the state of emergency into the constitution, because the 1955 law, even in its renewed 2015 form, is likely unconstitutional. The government fears it could be challenged [..] by those who have been raided by the police or placed under house arrest.”

UK May Approve Bill Allowing Spying on Individuals via Their Kids Toys

“British government’s new investigatory bill (pdf) has a proposal on making it legal to hack smart toys in order to allow investigators to get to pry on suspects.  This strategy could be one of many measures governments around the world are taking to track down cyber criminals and terrorists.  Furthermore, the bill has also made it a legal duty for all internet service providers to support law enforcement agencies in hacking smart devices like smart toys.  The most important clause the draft bill has is that the government can ask for the break of end-to-end encryption from private companies at any time and the companies have to oblige.”

Australia to Strip Dual Citizens of Citizenship for Suspected Terror Activities

“Legislation passed by the federal Senate late on Thursday will affect any person aged 14 or older, and in the case of a suspect whose activity takes place overseas, no conviction of a criminal offense will be necessary for the citizenship to be lost.  The legislation also allows the authorities to prevent any terrorist with dual nationality located abroad from returning to Australia, and to expel dual nationals who engage in terror activities in Australia, wherever possible. Several other Western countries have made similar amendments to citizenship legislation in recent years in response to the growing terror threat, including Canada and Britain.”

European Union to Crack Down on Bitcoin After Paris Attacks

“A draft document seen by Reuters said that EU member countries were planning to crack down on digital currencies and anonymous payment systems made via pre-paid cards in a bid to curb terrorism financing.  EU justice and interior ministers who will attend the meeting are expected to urge the European Commission to come up with measures to ‘strengthen controls of non-banking payment methods such as electronic/anonymous payments and virtual currencies and transfers of gold, precious metals, by pre-paid cards,’ said the draft conclusion of the meeting seen by Reuters.”

Israel to annex Syrian Golan Heights after ‘billion barrel’ oil find

“The day before Netanyahu’s meeting at the White House, Michael Oren, Israel’s former ambassador to the US, published a commentary on CNN’s website urging Obama to consider Israeli sovereignty over the Golan.  Neither Oren nor presumably Netanyahu highlighted another reason why Israel might be anxious to gain US approval of its effective annexation of the Golan in 1981, when it passed the Golan Heights Law extending Israeli law and administration throughout the territory, in violation of international law.  Last month Afek, an Israeli subsidiary of Genie Energy, a US oil company, announced that it had found considerable reserves of oil under the Golan.”

“The emergence of the exercise in Paris on the day of the November attacks has only heightened suspicions that somehow – directly or tangentially – there is more to the narrative than what has been presented. Of course, those on the Internet who wish to fuel their suspicions can find other such training exercises. Drills, for instance, were being held during the 9/11 terror attacks. Wikipedia further notes a training exercise was being conducted during the July 2005 London terror bombings (often referred to as 7/7).  The Madrid bombings, too, were accompanied by a terror drill. In Spain, the drill ended a day before the bombings.”
