Silent Circle’s latest app democratizes encryption. Governments won’t be happy.

“Back in October, the startup tech firm Silent Circle ruffled governments’ feathers with a ‘surveillance-proof’ smartphone app to allow people to make secure phone calls and send texts easily. Now, the company is pushing things even further—with a groundbreaking encrypted data transfer app that will enable people to send files securely from a smartphone or tablet at the touch of a button. (For now, it’s just being released for iPhones and iPads, though Android versions should come soon.) That means photographs, videos, spreadsheets, you name it—sent scrambled from one person to another in a matter of seconds.”

The Internet Has Been Conquered: Get Busy With the Next Steps

“For years, people like me have been telling everyone who will listen that they need to start using encryption and to stop cooperating with the strangling of the Internet. Sadly, not many people cared. They were far more interested in free services and shiny new iGadgets. Ah well… at least I did my part.  My point today is this:  It’s over. The state has won. The Internet will be fully controlled in just a few years.  Actually, it’s worse than that. Within that same amount of time, the Internet will not only be a Worldwide Surveillance Web, but it will be a Worldwide Manipulation Web.”

The Case for the Bitcoin Cryptocurrency

“Bitcoin takes the basic theorem that anything that be done with a trusted authority can be done without a trusted authority and applies the theorem to the combined fields of cryptography and currency, which is now known as cryptocurrency.  Bitcoin is the most popular cryptocurrency that exists today.  Bitcoin is a free open source peer-to-peer electronic cash system that is completely decentralized, without the need for a central server or trusted parties.  Users hold the crypto keys to their own money and transact directly with each other, with the help of a P2P network to check for double-spending.”

BitPay Banks $510K In Investment To Become PayPal for Bitcoin, Already Has 2,100 Businesses On Board

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/5909642457_0c21334ae8_z.jpg

“What makes Bitcoin so interesting is that it flies in the face of payment models that we’re used to today; it’s a push model rather than a pull one. When you give a website your credit card and billing information to buy something, the company is pulling money out of your account. Giving up that personal information isn’t the safest thing, and Bitcoin allows you to ‘push’ the money to a company to buy something. This means that no personally identifiable information goes with it, making eventual identity theft and fraud nearly impossible during the transaction.”

Kim Dotcom taunts investigators as he pledges to ‘turn the world upside down’ with new service called Mega

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/article-0-11719681000005DC-428_468x2862.jpg

“Controversial Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom has revealed his plans to launch a new site.  In a series of tweets today he called on software developers to get in touch to get early access to the new service, called simply ‘Mega’.  He promised it will be a ‘massive global network’, and said it will ‘change the world.  Tweets confirm it will contain email and fax tools, along with video capabilities.  It is also expected to offer users a simple way to encrypt their data.  Dotcom is also believed to be working on a Megabox music service that he has promised will arrive later this year.”

Mitt Romney’s tax returns being held hostage for $1 million in…Bitcoin?!

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/09/33639-six1.jpg

“Various sources — I saw it on VentureBeat — are reporting that PricewaterhouseCoopers, the big accounting firm, might have been hacked and that cyberthieves have made off with Mitt and Ann Romney’s tax returns.  None of this is substantiated, but here’s the zany part: the hackers are asking for a $1-million ransom, to not release Romney’s tax returns, a source of campaign controversy, to the media.  The ransom must be paid in Bitcoin, the cybercurrency with a checkered past but a devoted following amond the tech-libertarian set.”

Printable Gun Shut Down by Indiegogo

“Indiegogo, a website for submitting projects in order to get funding from donors, determined that a project (the Wiki Weapon Project) with the goal of creating a sharable/downloadable file for a 3-D printed gun was in violation of its terms of service.  A group calling itself ‘Defense Distributed’ is raising money to design and test the world’s first downloadable gun. Labeled ‘the Wiki Weapon Project,’ the plan is to develop a prototype comprised of printable parts made out of plastic that can fire a .22 caliber bullet.”

Julian Assange arrest plan revealed accidentally

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Julian-Assange-0082.jpg

“Plans to seize Julian Assange ‘under all circumstances’ the moment he leaves the Ecuadorean embassy in London have accidentally been revealed by a police officer displaying restricted documents outside the embassy.  The document, pictured under the officer’s arm by a Press Association photographer, appears to advocate arresting the WikiLeaks founder whether he leaves the building in a diplomatic bag or in a diplomatic car.  The British government has threatened, under a 1987 Act, to enter the embassy and arrest the 41-year-old, but foreign secretary William Hague has said there is no intention to ‘storm’ the building.”
