Hawala bashing: The arrogance, stupidity and futility of ‘power’

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/samizdata_logo1.jpg

“A hawala (or fei qian) is a simple network set up to transfer funds internationally, usually using a member of an extended family or personal friend on both sides of the network (though a few larger hawalas are almost like banks).  In fact they are an excellent example of highly successful, completely unregulated, handshake based international capitalism. Hence is it hardly surprising so many people in government do not like these networks as it gives lie to all the smug claims about the supposed superiority of the West’s regulated international financial systems.”

It’s Official: Facebook Is the Department of PreCrime

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/lewrock2002b754.gif

“I expect further facts to emerge about Brandon and what has been done to him, and I expect to see some creative statist media spin. Regardless of whatever facts emerge, I suspect that high law enforcers will get the talking heads to reassure the public that this was done to keep them safe. The obedient onlookers will be given a reason to ignore the story.   The point I want you to get is that Facebook is the Department of PreCrime. Everything you do there (or your friends, family or co-workers do there) is monitored and may be taken as a valid reason for armed men to grab you and lock you up.”

Russia’s Top Cyber Sleuth Foils US Spies, Helps Kremlin Pals

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Kaspersky_83.jpe

“One of his goals is to persuade policymakers to refashion the Internet into something more to his liking—and, as it happens, something more to the liking of the Putin government as well.  Kaspersky insists that malware like Stuxnet and Flame should be banned by international treaty. He argues that the Internet should be partitioned and certain regions of it made accessible only to users who present an ‘Internet passport.’  The values of openness, freedom, and anonymity became deeply embedded in net culture and in the very architecture of the network itself. But to Kaspersky, these notions no longer work.”

Britain threatens to storm Ecuador embassy to get Assange

“The diplomatic standoff over WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange escalated on Wednesday after Britain threatened to raid Ecuador’s embassy in London if Quito did not hand over Assange, who has been taking refuge there for two months.  The Ecuadorean government said such an action would be considered a ‘hostile and intolerable act’ as well as a violation of its sovereignty.  ‘We want to be very clear, we’re not a British colony. The colonial times are over,’ Ecuadorean Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said in an angry statement after a meeting with President Rafael Correa.”

Canadians among top buyers, sellers on Silk Road, the new eBay for illegal drugs

http://www.montrealgazette.com/news/national/7095711.bin

“The currency used on the site is called Bitcoin — a digital currency that makes it nearly impossible for authorities to follow the money trail. One Bitcoin currently converts to just over C$11.  Christin suggested in his study that destabilizing the digital currency may be one of the only ways to take down the website.  ‘It’s the only currency that is used there and it’s already fairly volatile,’ he said. ‘This is the type of thing that could potentially be an impediment to transactions taking place on the Silk Road.'”  [Sorry, boys, but such coup d’état & financial manipulation tactics are so 20th Century…]

Bitcoin, the Darknet Economy, and the Low Over-Head Revolution

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/nodrop.png

“Bitcoin’s importance can’t be exaggerated. Encrypted currency has been at the Altair stage of development. If Bitcoin isn’t actually the Apple II – and it may not be – we’re very close to it. If Bitcoin isn’t the Messiah of the darknet economy, at the very least it’s John the Baptist preaching its immanent arrival.”

Black Market Drug Site ‘Silk Road’ Booming: $22 Million In Annual Sales

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/Screen-Shot-2012-08-06-at-11.52.12-AM2.png

“The site’s number of sellers, who offer everything from cocaine to ecstasy, has jumped from around 300 in February to more than 550. Its total sales now add up to around $1.9 million a month. And its operators generate more than $6,000 a day in commissions for themselves, compared with around $2,500 in February.  Christin cautions that his study only looks at a six month period of Silk Road’s sales, and that a big part of the site’s measured success comes from appreciation in the Bitcoin currency Silk Road trades in.”
