Austrian Tor Exit Node Operator Found Guilty As An Accomplice

techdirt1

“Three years ago we wrote about how Austrian police had seized computers from someone running a Tor exit node. This kind of thing happens from time to time, but it appears that folks in Austria have taken it up a notch by… effectively now making it illegal to run a Tor exit node.  It’s pretty standard to name criminal accomplices liable for ‘aiding and abetting’ the activities of others, but it’s a massive and incredibly dangerous stretch to argue that merely running a Tor exit node makes you an accomplice that ‘contributes to the completion’ of a crime. Under this sort of thinking, Volkswagen would be liable if someone drove a VW as the getaway car in a bank robbery.”

“During his last six years working as an elite security researcher for Google, the hacker known as Morgan Mayhem spent his nights and weekends hunting down the malware used to spy on vulnerable targets like human rights activists and political dissidents.  His new job tasks him with defending a different endangered species: American national security journalists.  34-year-old Morgan Marquis-Boire [is now] the director of security for First Look Media, the media startup founded by eBay billionaire Pierre Omidyar that has recruited journalists Glenn Greenwald and Laura Poitras.  The website has become the most prolific publisher of NSA leaker Edward Snowden’s remaining secrets.”

Bitcoin Mining Pool Ghash.io DDoS-ed in Response to 51% Status?

“Ghash.io has not yet replied to requests for comments, but bitcoiners speculated that Ghash.io was DDos-ed due to ongoing concerns over their share of hashrate distribution.  Although the decrease in hashrate may only be temporary, the DDos may act as a warning, not only to Ghash.io, but to all pools who may gain too great a share of the hashrate distribution to the point where the decentralized nature of bitcoin is placed in danger as it is likely that income would have been lost during the DDos period which may cause miners to reconsider whether they wish to partake in a pool that seems to be at the frontline of criticism.”

Blockchain’s SharedCoin Users Can Be Identified, Says Security Expert

“Bitcoin users in need of serious transaction privacy should avoid popular services like Blockchain’s SharedCoin and other CoinJoin implementations, according to a well-known security expert.  Consultant Kristov Atlas, author of the book Anonymous Bitcoin, published a security advisory today saying weaknesses in SharedCoin offered privacy only from ‘unskilled examiners of the bitcoin blockchain’ – and even then, only until more sophisticated analysis tools were made user-friendly enough for the average user to deploy.  Atlas recommended anyone using SharedCoin set the number of cycles to the maximum 10, while remembering that even this did not guarantee 100% privacy.”

‘Dark Wallet’ wants to make Bitcoin even harder to trace

“Dark Wallet is a browser app for bitcoin payments that uses both encryption and CoinJoin technology.  CoinJoin essentially mixes multiple bitcoin transactions, selected at random, as one transfer of funds and conceals the original payers.  Dark Wallet offers anonymous transactions by default.  The political orientation of Dark Wallet’s backers unSystem attracted attention to the app when it was launched on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website, where it raised more than $52,000 last December.  ‘Bitcoin is the next battle ground in the fight against supranational political domination,’ wrote the backers, including Cody Wilson, known for creating the world’s first 3D-printed gun.”

After DNS change fails, Turkish gov. steps up Twitter censorship

“After pledging to ‘wipe out Twitter,’ Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ordered Turkish ISPs to block the social networking site, redirecting requests to a government webpage. The social media campaign against Erdoğan has continued to grow despite the government’s best effort, but now the government has raised the bar of the attack, ordering ISPs to block traffic to the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses assigned to Twitter. This move essentially erases Twitter from the Internet within Turkey—at least to those people who don’t have access to SMS messaging, a foreign virtual private network or Web proxy service, or the Tor anonymizing network.”

Tweets In Turkey Up 138% Even Though The Country Banned Twitter

There might be a ban on Twitter in Turkey, but that’s not stopping people from tweeting.  As we reported earlier, people are getting around the ban by using an alternate DNS service.  They’re also tweeting using text messages and anonymous VPNs.  In fact, according to We Are Social and Brandwatch, tweets in the country are up 138%. The stats below were gathered between 2 a.m. and noon local time in Turkey, and are based on a sample of geolocated tweets.”

Dutch Christian Democrats Push For Ban On Tor Network, Bitcoin

“The questions were issued by two Dutch politicians, Peter Oskam and Eddy van Hijum, both members of the Christian Democratic Appeal party, who stressed the importance of scrutinizing the issue in the wake of this arrest, as well as the suicide of a Dutch teenager who purchased a firearm online.  The lawmakers were seeking to address the steps being taken by Opstelten and his agency to limit the purchase of firearms online. The correspondence suggested potential bans on bitcoin and the anonymous software system Tor as solutions to the stated concerns.  Opstelten’s full remarks also indicated that international cooperation, for now, remains the best possible defense against bitcoin.”

FreeSpeechMe: Anti-Censorship and Secure Domain Resolving Plug-in

“Namecoin is a Bitcoin derivative that allows you to register names and data into a public blockchain. It bypasses going through central agencies that can take down your websites by removing the DNS entry.  Namecoin isn’t one of these dozens of ‘me too!’ cryptocurrencies popping up each day. In fact, Namecoin is barely even used as a currency, althought have very high value for a non-bitcoin cryptocurrency. That’s not its reason for existence. It exists to register domain names that can be used around the world without relying on government-controlled entities who can delete anything at a whim.”
