Trace Mayer on all things Bitcoin

“Entrepreneur, investor and early Bitcoin thought-leader Trace Mayer sat down with Money & Tech’s Jered Kenna to talk about all things Bitcoin and digital currency, from predictions around the current arrests and regulation conversations, to the benefits of Bitcoin as ‘the first practical implementation of triple-entry bookkeeping,’ and the immense possibility of the higher-level decentralized distributed ledger concept, to -ultimately- why it’s so important to hold onto your own private keys.  As Trace Mayer puts it, innovating on the old saying ‘He who has the gold makes the rules,’ it’s increasingly becoming ‘He who holds the private keys makes the rules.'”

Don’t Want Your Laptop Tampered With? Just Add Glitter Nail Polish

“If you’re traveling overseas, across borders or anywhere you’re afraid your laptop or other equipment might be tampered with or examined, you’ve got a new secret weapon to improve security. Glitter nail polish.  Don’t laugh. It works.  Security researchers Eric Michaud and Ryan Lackey, making a presentation at the Chaos Communication Congress on Monday, highlighted the power of nail polish – along with metallic paints and even crappy stickers – to help people know when their machines have been physically tampered with and potentially compromised.”

Silk Road Vendor Argues He Sold Legal Products For Seized Bitcoins

“Somewhere in the $164 million worth of bitcoins held by the U.S. government, there’s a chunk of the cryptocurrency that until very recently belonged to Peter Ward, a British self-described ‘cybertechnohippy’ and dealer in drug paraphernalia like bongs, marijuana seeds, and rolling papers. On Thursday, Ward began the process of retaining a lawyer to file a claim for what he says were 100 bitcoins seized by the FBI in the takedown of the Silk Road online black market for drugs last October. Ward says he earned his bitcoins through entirely legal means, offering the same merchandise that he advertises on the public Internet from his head shop Planet Pluto in Devon, England.”

If You Used This Secure Webmail Site, the FBI Has Your Inbox

“According to the new document, the FBI obtained the data belonging to Freedom Hosting’s customers through a Mutual Legal Assistance request to France – where the company leased its servers – between July 22, 2013 and August 2 of last year.  The French company also hasn’t been identified. But France’s largest hosting company, OVH, announced on July 29, in the middle of the FBI’s then-secret Freedom Hosting seizure, that it would no longer allow Tor software on its servers. A spokesman for the company says he can’t comment on specific cases, and declined to say whether Freedom Hosting was a customer.”

The FBI Seized All of TorMail’s Data and Is Using It to Catch Hackers

“If you had any faith left in anonymous email services, now would be the time to let that go. New court documents show that in chasing down associates of Freedom Hosting, the FBI managed to download the entire email database of TorMail. And now it’s using that information to take on the Darknet. It’s unknown exactly how many users or how much data is in the TorMail network, but we do know that the FBI has it all. The agency obtained a search warrant for a TorMail account connected to a Florida man accused of stealing credit card numbers in order to search its own copy of the database. It appears that the FBI acquired the database while using malware to investigate Freedom Hosting last year.”

Introducing Blackphone: The Ultimate NSA-Proof Smartphone

“Phil Zimmerman first made his mark on the security realm in 1991 when he released PGP, the most widely-used email encryption software in the world.  Today, he and his encryption company Silent Circle will help launch Blackphone.  The whole purpose of the Blackphone will be to protect users’ privacy. Running a ‘security-oriented’ version of Android, called PrivatOS, the Blackphone will be carrier and vendor-independent and will let users make and receive secure phone calls, exchange secure texts, transfer and store files, and video chat through a virtual private network, according to the company’s announcement.”

An NSA-Proof Twitter, Built With Code From Bitcoin and BitTorrent

“Twister is surprisingly easy to use for an application that’s so new, that isn’t controlled by a central authority, and that places so much emphasis on security. Other decentralized alternatives to Twitter and Facebook — such as Pump.ioIdentica and Diaspora — require that you either operate your own dedicated server or trust someone else to run a server for you. Twister works more like peer-to-peer file sharing software: Launch the app, and it connects with other users. There’s no need for a central server.  It manages this trick through the bitcoin protocol, though not the network that actually drives the digital currency.”

How The Pirate Bay Plans to Beat Censorship For Good

“The new tool will create its own P2P network through which sites can be accessed without restrictions.  The new software will be released as a standalone application as well as Firefox and Chrome plugins.  Since the site data comes from other peers, there is no central IP-address that can be blocked by Internet providers. Site owners will still offer webseeds to speed up loading, but sites are fully accessible when these are blocked.  Another important change is that the new software will not use standard domain names. The ‘domain’ registrations will be Bitcoin authenticated, on a first come first served basis. After a year the name will expire unless it’s re-verified.”

The Year in Crypto

“This was a busy year for crypto.  TLS was broken. And then broken again. Discrete logs were computed. And then computed again. Is the cryptopocalypse nigh? Has the NSA backdoored everything in sight? Also, answers to last year’s exercises will be given.”
