Police Crack Down On High Schoolers’ Nerf Gun Battle

“It all started when neighbors reported someone pointing a gun at a car one night earlier in the week.  ‘They did scare a number of people in the area,’ Capt. Ben Bliven of the Wausau Police Department told WAOW-TV.  There’s one tiny wrinkle in this incident, though — the students weren’t carrying real guns.  They were Nerf guns — and part of a game trending in popularity called ‘Nerf Wars.’  Police cited the six seniors for disorderly conduct. In addition, their high school, Wausau West, placed some of them on athletic probation.  The students aren’t happy about the outcome. ‘I think it was a little overdone with the cops coming and the guns they brought with them,’ senior Brad Gajewski said.”

Millennials Mired in Wealth Gap as Older Americans Recoup Wealth

“The damage inflicted on U.S. households by the collapse of the housing market and recession wasn’t evenly distributed.  For households headed by someone 40 years old or younger, wealth adjusted for inflation remains 30 percent below 2007 levels on average.  Net worth for older Americans has already recouped the losses.  With fewer young people owning homes, not as many are benefiting from the rebound in home prices.  What’s more, heads of households under age 40 aren’t benefiting as much from a boom in equity prices, which have hit record highs this year. About 27 percent of 18 to 29 year olds owned stocks as of April 2013, compared to 61 percent of 50 to 64 year olds.”

Airport security scrutinized after boy flies to Maui in plane’s wheel well

“Airport spokeswoman Rosemary Barnes said the SJC’s security program ‘meets and exceeds all federal requirements’ and works closely with the Transportation Security Administration and the San Jose Police Department. But the perimeter fence where the boy trespassed is monitored by the airport.  ‘No security program is 100 percent,’ Barnes said. ‘We’re continuing to review video to determine where in fact he was able to scale the section of fence line, how he as able to proceed onto a ramp and get himself into the wheel well of that aircraft.’  Barnes said the boy, under ‘cover of darkness,’ climbed a perimeter fence sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning.”

After DNS change fails, Turkish gov. steps up Twitter censorship

“After pledging to ‘wipe out Twitter,’ Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan ordered Turkish ISPs to block the social networking site, redirecting requests to a government webpage. The social media campaign against Erdoğan has continued to grow despite the government’s best effort, but now the government has raised the bar of the attack, ordering ISPs to block traffic to the Internet Protocol (IP) addresses assigned to Twitter. This move essentially erases Twitter from the Internet within Turkey—at least to those people who don’t have access to SMS messaging, a foreign virtual private network or Web proxy service, or the Tor anonymizing network.”

Taiwan Police Evict Protesters From Cabinet Building

“Taiwan’s police evicted dozens of protesters from the cabinet building early Monday morning, as tensions continued to spiral between the government and students occupying two major government buildings over a controversial trade pact with China.  Dubbed the ‘Sunflower Movement,’ the students’ seizure of the legislative chamber followed the KMT’s unilateral passage of the pact during a first reading without bipartisan deliberation on March 17.  The protest, once numbering more than 10,000 people, is the biggest student-led protest in Taiwan’s history. It is also the first time that the legislature has been taken over by protesters.”

Beaten, Thrown in Solitary After Calling 911 To Help Crashed Bicyclist

“I live in a new gilded age in a golden city. But sometimes the cracks show, even here. The façade crumbles and you find yourself naked, in solitary confinement, in a wretched, feces-stained prison.  How? As a result of my efforts to help injured bicyclists by calling 911, I was, in short order: separated from my friend, violently tackled, arrested, taken to county jail, stripped and left in a solitary cell. I am writing this story because, if it could happen to me, it could happen to you, and I feel the need to do something to help prevent this brutality from propagating.”

Teen Spends 13 Days in Jail for a Pocketknife in a School Parking Lot

“‘There are all these school occurrences where people are shot, people are killed by other students,’ the prosecutor, Harold Specht, said. ‘We see it every day … so we don’t take these things lightly. … We have to be sure that we don’t have a potential for something like that to happen here.’  Jordan Wiser said he’s offended by Specht’s characterization.  ‘I was enlisted in the Army and went to school to be [a] police officer and fireman,’ he said. ‘Why are they trying to paint me as a potential school shooter? I never had any intentions of hurting a soul.’  ‘Never in my life did I think this would happen,’ Wiser said. ‘I dedicated my life to public service, and now a four-inch pocketknife could ruin everything.'”

MIT to New Jersey: Back off our students

“MIT President L. Rafael Reif says he and MIT are standing behind students threatened by New Jersey with legal action if they don’t turn over detailed information about a ‘proof of concept’ project involving the online currency Bitcoin.  ‘I want to make it clear that the students who created Tidbit have the full and enthusiastic support of MIT. Chancellor Cindy Barnhart and Provost Marty Schmidt met with the students yesterday. They and General Counsel Greg Morgan also spoke with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), which is providing to the students, pro bono, the independent legal representation that they need.'”

MIT Bitcoin hackers slapped with New Jersey subpoena fight back

“Although 98 percent of Tidbit’s infrastructure is in place, it isn’t ready for production use, according to the developers. They intentionally left out the final interaction (with Bitcoin pooling service P2Pool) while they worked on a set of terms and conditions. That’s why they were so surprised when New Jersey came knocking.  ‘We were served right before finals,’ Rubin told VentureBeat. ‘I think what was hardest is that I, and perhaps most MIT students, just want to build, make, and tinker towards a better future.’  Tidbit could enable websites to tap into visitors’ computers and borrow CPU cycles to mine Bitcoin. In exchange, the sites would remove display advertising for those who opt-in.”

Venezuela students protesting economy shot dead by gunmen

“At least three people were shot dead as violence erupted during anti-government protests in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, on Wednesday.  Students in the western states of Tachira and Merida have been at the forefront of the protests, saying they are fed up with the lack of security and the poor state of Venezuela’s economy.  The country has the highest inflation rate in the region at 56.2% in 2013, according to official figures.  It is also beset by shortages, with shoppers often having to search a number of supermarkets for staples such as milk and toilet paper.  The government has blamed the shortages on ‘saboteurs’ and ‘profit-hungry corrupt businessmen’.”
