Brazil’s latest WhatsApp ban pushes users to other encrypted messaging apps

“Even during the short time that Brazil’s ban on the Facebook-owned app was in effect, people still found other ways to access the type of encrypted messaging features that triggered the block in the first place.   Several rival apps that offer encrypted messaging services reported a surge in Brazilian sign-ups, which highlights how the growing ubiquity of private messaging apps makes it hard to stop people from using them.  U.S. legislation introduced by senators Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) and Richard Burr (R-N.C.) last month would require companies to help to unscramble encrypted communications for the government if passed.”

Tamir Rice Protesters March to Prosecutor’s Home, Demand Resignation

“Protesters upset by a decision not to indict two white police officers in the shooting death of Tamir Rice, a 12-year-old black boy who had a pellet gun, marched to the home of the prosecutor Friday and repeated calls for him to resign.  Tamir was shot within two seconds of the officers’ police cruiser skidding to a stop near the boy.  McGinty said police radio personnel contributed to the tragedy by failing to pass along the ‘all-important fact’ that a 911 caller said the gunman was probably a juvenile and the gun probably was not real. Mayor Frank Jackson and Police Chief Calvin Williams said that as protests continue, they plan to balance public safety with protesters’ First Amendment rights.”

Americans: ‘Online Surveillance Is O.K. For Most’

“A majority of Americans say they support warrantless government surveillance of the Internet communications of U.S. citizens, according to a new [AP] poll.  It’s at least somewhat important for the government to sacrifice freedoms to ensure safety, most say in the survey. Majorities both of Republicans (67 percent) and Democrats (55 percent) favor government surveillance of Americans’ Internet activities to watch for suspicious activity that might be connected to terrorism. Independents are more divided, with 40 percent in favor and 35 percent opposed. Only a third of Americans under 30, but nearly two-thirds 30 and older, support warrantless surveillance.”

UK reviews home schooling amid fears children are being ‘radicalised’

“It is unclear how many children and young adults are being home schooled but it is thought to be in the region of 20,000 to 50,000.  Parents do not have to inform their council that they are educating their children at home, leaving the government in the dark about the number of kids at risk of radicalisation through education at home. ‘For every parent doing a brilliant job, there may be someone filling their child’s mind with poison. We just don’t know. We don’t have reliable figures,’ the source said.  The Education Secretary’s new approach comes after the announcement of an investigation into the activities of unregistered schools and madrassahs.”

Cop who killed unarmed teen for selling marijuana not charged

“Seneca Police Lt. Mark Tiller shot and killed Zachary Hammond, 19, of Seneca, S.C., in an attempted marijuana bust July 26 in a fast-food parking lot. The officer said he shot Hammond because he feared the teenager was trying to run over him with his car. Eric Bland, lawyer for the Hammond family, said video from the officer’s dashboard camera clearly shows that Tiller was not in danger of being run over when he fired the fatal shot and said federal charges of civil-rights violations could still be forthcoming. Tori Morton of Pickens, Hammond’s date that night, was charged with simple possession of marijuana.”

Debian founder allegedly suicides following brutal altercation with SFPD

“Ian Murdock, 42, has died, according to Docker. He will be remembered as the founder of Debian and the creator of apt-get, and his death this week has touched the entire software community.  In the past, Murdock also worked at Sun Microsystems, where he created a packaging system for the Solaris operating system. He also served as the CTO of the Linux Foundation.  Murdock had tweeted distressing messages on Monday evening, alleging the San Francisco police department had assaulted him.  ‘The rest of my life is to fight against the police.. they are NOT friends, so don’t ever believe otherwise,’ he tweeted on Monday.”

CIA director fumes over teen who hacked his AOL email account

“The head of the CIA says he was ‘outraged’ by a teenager’s hacking of his personal AOL email account.  Brennan didn’t explain why someone in his position still has an AOL account that a teenager was able to access.  The hacker said he used a reverse phone-number lookup to determine that Brennan has a Verizon Wireless account.  He then called the company, posing as a technician whose ‘tools were down’ to get details about the account, including Brennan’s AOL email address.  With that information, the teen called AOL and convinced a representative to reset the password, using Brennan’s personal details provided by Verizon.”

Brazil Shuts Down WhatsApp, Wants To Shut Down The Social Web

“A judge in Sao Paulo has ordered WhatsApp to shut down for 48 hours, starting at 9pm Eastern tonight.  WhatsApp is the single most used app in Brazil, with about 93 million users, or 93% of the country’s internet population. It’s a particularly useful service for Brazil’s youth and poor, many who cannot afford to pay the most expensive plans on the planet.  But if Brazil’s conservative Congress gets its way, they’re going to take down the entire social web as we know it, with bills circulating through the legislature to criminalize posting social media content and to allow the government to spy on its citizens.”
