Cop who wanted to photograph teen’s erection in sexting case commits suicide

“Detective David Edward Abbott, a member of the Northern Virginia-Washington DC Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, last year had obtained a warrant to inject a young boy with a drug that would cause an erection. Abbott wanted to photograph that erection and compare it with photos found on a 15-year-old girl’s phone. Amid a public outcry, the Manassas City police eventually decided against doing that. The 17-year-old boy got a year of probation for sexting his teen girlfriend.  For at least two years, Abbott had an inappropriate relationship with a boy, now 13, police alleged. He was accused of soliciting sexual acts on the phone, via text messages and social media.”

Jerry Seinfeld’s lemonade stand gets shut down by police

“Seinfeld and his family were shut down by East Hampton, New York, police on Tuesday, Aug. 18 for setting up a lemonade stand, reports CBS New York.  Seinfeld’s wife Jessica posted a photo on Instagram of her son, Julian, and two of his friends with their hands up (jokingly) amidst the police drama.  When officers arrived after a neighbor complained about illegally parked cars, they informed the Seinfelds that it is not legal to run a lemonade stand on village property.  ‘Lemonade dreams crushed by local neighbor, but not before raising lots of money for @loverecycled,’ Jessica Schneider wrote on Instagram. ‘Thanks to all of our customers and big tippers!'”

Cops Raid Little Girls’ “Illegal” Lemonade Stand, Shut it Down

“Last week, police in Texas heroically saved the town from likes of two young girls who attempted to open a black market lemonade stand. The girls, one 7-year-old and one 8-year-old, dared to try to raise money to buy a Father’s day present for their dad by setting up a lemonade stand in their neighborhood.  Andria and Zoey Green told ABC affiliate KLTV they were trying to raise about $100 for a Father’s Day present. They wanted to take him to Splash Kingdom.  Over the weekend, the two young entrepreneurs took to the streets with their delicious batch of homemade lemonade and began to provide willing customers with their product.”

Millennials Don’t Trust Uncle Sam, and That’s Good

“The millennials’ low confidence in every branch of government reflects the fact that public policies not only fail to achieve their stated objectives, but directly undermine what matters to them most.  Perhaps millennials are more skeptical of government surveillance and other programs than previous generations because reports and data like that are so readily available. Maybe it’s because they are a generation of digital natives. Growing up immersed in technology, they seem more immune than their elders to cyber scare tactics.  Whatever the reason, one thing is clear. Millennials won’t let people—in the government or otherwise—step on their toes without justification.”

Grooveshark co-founder Josh Greenberg found dead at 28

“Greenberg’s death comes several weeks after Grooveshark reached a final settlement with the record labels that sued it out of business over copyright violations. To avoid a damages trial that could’ve awarded those labels hundreds of millions of dollars, Grooveshark agreed to wipe away its entire existence, erasing all servers and giving ownership of its web domain, mobile applications, and all intellectual property to the labels.  At its peak, the service tallied between 35 million and 40 million users and employed 145 people.”

Texas Town Charging Reporters $79,000 for Emails About Cop Abuse

“Days after McKinney, Texas, police officer Eric Casebolt was filmed pointing his service weapon at a group of unarmed black teenagers at a pool party this month, Gawker submitted a Public Information Act request to the city of McKinney asking to see Casebolt’s records and any emails about his conduct sent or received by McKinney Police Department employees. Today, we received a letter from the city’s attorneys claiming that fulfilling our request would cost $79,229.09.  Since when are year-old emails not searchable? Is the city of McKinney still corresponding via telegram?”

Drug cops took a college kid’s savings; 13 police departments want a cut

“Like Joseph Rivers, Charles Clarke is a young black man. And like Rivers, he lost his cash at a so-called ‘cold consent’ encounter — that is, a warrantless search voluntarily agreed to — at one of the nation’s transportation hubs. Clarke didn’t have any marijuana on him or in his baggage, so he hasn’t been charged with any drug crimes.  He was charged with resisting arrest and assaulting an officer, however, after he tried to prevent the agents from seizing his money by yelling at them and struggling with the agents when they grabbed the cash, according to the agent’s affidavit. The charges were subsequently dropped, according to his lawyers at the Institute for Justice.”

Millions in Brazil Follow a Teen Leader to Freedom

“The catalyzing events behind Brazil’s freedom movement are high taxes, massive corruption and cronyism, rising price inflation amid a sluggish economy, and the widely perceived incompetence of President Dilma Rousseff and her socialist-leaning Workers’ Party.  It gained significant attention on June 1 when it organized a campaign against taxes that make up 60 percent of the price of beer. And though no political party in Brazil has been committed to liberty since the 19th century, one is now in the making. The Novo (‘New’) Party has gathered the signatures necessary for the next step: certification by the government so it can field candidates in elections.”

Voters post ballot selfies online in protest of new social media law

“The Legislature changed the law last session, adding the ‘social media’ part. It has been illegal to show your ballot to someone else for a long time, but questions came up about the law after people started posting photos of their completed ballots online. Breaking the ballot-selfie law is a violation and carries a fine of up to $1,000.  Dozens of photos popped up on social media Tuesday, in part because of a Facebook group called NH Ballot Selfies. The group has 14 members, several of whom posted photos of their ballots. Searching Twitter for #ballotselfie comes up with more people posting photos of their ballots, not out of ignorance, but as a form of civil disobedience.”

Feds Seize Silk Road 2 in Major Dark Web Drug Bust

“On Thursday international law enforcement agencies including the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security and Europol took down the Silk Road 2 and arrested its alleged operator 26-year-old Blake Benthall in San Francisco. The criminal complaint against Benthall outlines how the Silk Road 2’s staff was infiltrated by at least one undercover law enforcement agent even before the site went online in November of last year. In May of this year, the FBI somehow pinpointed the foreign server that ran the Silk Road 2 despite its use of the anonymity software Tor to protect its location, and obtained records from the server’s hosting provider identifying Benthall.”
