TSA Will Stop Accepting Driver’s Licenses From Nine States On Jan. 10

“A decade ago, Congress passed The Real ID Act which was supposed to make it easier for law enforcement to share information on driver’s licenses issued by the states and territories. Even during a period of heightened fear of terrorism, there was massive and continuing pushback because everyone realized that when the federal government (or any other centralized authority) concentrates information, it just makes it that much easier for it to get hacked or misused (here are 22.1 million examples of the former and one representative example of the latter).  A dozen states actually have laws banning their divisions of motor vehicles from complying with Real ID requirements.”

Library’s Tor relay—pulled after feds noticed—now restored

“A Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agent first learned of the plan after reading Ars’ July 30 article and then forwarded it on as a heads-up to a local police officer on the New Hampshire Internet Crimes Against Children task force. That, in turn, led to a meeting between local law enforcement, city officials, and the library. (HSI is the investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security.) Sean Fleming, the library’s IT director, told Ars before the Tuesday vote that there was ‘no pressure from the feds at all.'”

Blackberry CEO: Apple has gone to a “dark place” with pro-privacy stance

“‘Our privacy commitment does not extend to criminals,’ Chen wrote in a blog post.  In the wake of the Edward Snowden revelations, Apple chief Tim Cook decided not to build backdoor access to locked devices running iOS 8 and iOS 9. Earlier versions, like iOS 7, can be accessed by Apple. The Justice Department has frowned on Cook’s actions.  Chen insinuated that if a Blackberry phone was at issue in the case Ars wrote about, he would comply with the search warrant.”

China’s new anti-terror law copies West, with decryption on demand

“Reuters quotes Li Shouwei, deputy head of the parliament’s criminal law division under the legislative affairs committee, as saying: ‘This rule accords with the actual work need of fighting terrorism and is basically the same as what other major countries in the world do.’  China’s pointed reference to what ‘other major countries in the world do’ underlines another reason why the current attacks on encryption by government officials in the West arenot just wrong, but extremely counterproductive. After all, the US and EU nations can’t criticise or challenge other countries for introducing intrusive surveillance laws that are almost indistinguishable from their own.”

Millions of Americans might need passports to fly domestic in 2016

“A decade ago, the U.S. government issued stricter standards for state-issued IDs, including drivers licenses. But four states have refused to comply: Louisiana, Minnesota, New Hampshire and New York.  The deadline for upgrading is coming up in 2016. If those four states don’t upgrade their ID systems by the deadline, the TSA will demand that residents of those four states use passports rather than drivers licenses to board flights next year. About 9.5 million drivers licenses have been issued in those states, according to government licensing records.”

The disappearing allure of the safe deposit box [2014]

“The safe deposit box, once a staple of any bank branch, has itself become an antique. Banks are reporting that safe deposit box use is on the decline, with occupancy rates dropping quickly as customers buy home safes, digitize and store documents electronically, and, in this era of conspicuous consumption, prefer to display their valuables rather than stash them away for special occasions.  Jerry Pluard, the owner of Safe Deposit Box Insurance Coverage LLC, an Illinois company that insures the contents of the boxes, estimates that nearly half — 45 percent — of safe deposit boxes in the country are empty today.”

Horrific outrage erupts over proposed mosque in Virginia

“‘Nobody wants your evil cult,’ declared a man at a zoning meeting in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He was lobbing his invective at several American Muslims there over a proposed mosque to be built there. ‘Every one of you are terrorists. I don’t care what you say. I don’t care what you think,’ the man said at the otherwise peaceable assembly.  Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has insisted that thousands of American Muslims in New Jersey cheered after the 2001 attacks. Ted Cruz says that only Christian refugees from Syria should be allowed to resettle in the U.S. The Democratic mayor of Roanoke, Virginia spoke favorably about Japanese internment camps during World War II.”

Watching the Anti-Freedom Actions of Francois Hollande

Anthony-Wile1

“Francois Hollande has come into his own. After nearly bankrupting France and raising taxes so aggressively that he has driven many of France’s best and brightest abroad, Hollande has found his voice as a wartime president.  Bombing Syria is not going to forestall further violence in France. In fact, such actions will surely increase the chaos and over time add to the bloodletting. But Hollande has found his voice! He bays for blood and lobbies Britain to join him in bombing Syria. The Middle East mistakes of the past decade are about to be repeated. And actually, after a point one cannot call them ‘mistakes.'”

Paris Attacks Spur Emergency Edict and Intense Policing in France

“All over France, from Toulouse in the south to Paris and beyond, the police have been breaking down doors, conducting searches without warrants, aggressively questioning residents, hauling suspects to police stations and putting others under house arrest.  The extraordinary steps are now perfectly legal under the state of emergency decreed by the government after the attacks on Nov. 13 in Paris that left 130 dead — a rare kind of mobilization that will continue. The French Parliament voted last week to extend the emergency for three more months, which means more warrantless searches, more interrogations, more people placed under house arrest.”

Glenn Greenwald: Why the CIA is smearing Edward Snowden after Paris

“There still is no evidence that the perpetrators in Paris used the Internet to plot their attacks, let alone used encryption technology.  CIA officials simply made that up. It is at least equally likely that the attackers formulated their plans in face-to-face meetings. The central premise of the CIA’s campaign — encryption enabled the attackers to evade our detection — is baseless.  Even if they had used encryption, what would that prove? Are we ready to endorse the precept that no human communication can ever take place without the U.S. government being able to monitor it? The claim that the Paris attackers learned to use encryption from Snowden is even more misleading.”
