Attacking Payday Predators Misses the Point

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Holder wants to prosecute Wall Street bankers and Bloomberg wants to regulate payday lenders. Neither approach deals with the fundamental issue of the business cycle and central banking’s role in it.  Holder’s latest initiative targets Wall Street banking. The CFPB believes a similar level of exploitation lurks within the payday loan industry. It would be far more productive to try to understand why such payday loans are necessary, why poverty is increasing in the US and throughout the West, why some 40 million US citizens use food stamps while tens of millions more cannot find a job. These are deep and serious issues that would demand scrutiny of the US’s basic economic model.”

Obama order urges companies to share cybersecurity information

“The order the president signed here encourages the development of central clearinghouses for companies and the government to share data and creation of centers where data can be shared across specific geographic regions. Obama pushed for collaboration between the public and private sectors.  ‘There’s only one way to defend America from these cyber threats, and that is through government and industry working together, sharing appropriate information as true partners,’ he said. Both privacy groups and Silicon Valley companies have said they would oppose the legislation Obama proposed last month unless reforms are first made to the NSA’s surveillance program.”

Senate Report Highlights Cars Vulnerable to DARPA-Funded Hackers

“Markey’s investigation was inspired when DARPA-funded hackers Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek demonstrated—with me behind the wheel—that they could cut a Ford Escape’s brakes, slam on a Prius’ brakes, monkey with the cars’ steering, and much more. Their work was built off an earlier study by researchers at the Universities of Washington and California at San Diego, which showed that they could gain wireless access to those same critical driving systems.”

Greece Offers New Bailout Plan as Latest Grexit Drama Commences

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“We begin to see a pattern here. As always, we are led to believe the crisis is unavoidable and the horror is about to descend. And then at the last minute, or even after the last minute, the bureaucrats somehow manage to resolve their differences. Some government leader or other is proclaimed a hero and the mainstream media rejoices. This seems like a movie we’ve seen before. These constant cliff-hangers are part and parcel of the negotiating process. The contentiousness is necessary to ensure that all eyes are on Brussels and everyone gets the message that if you work in a government job, the fate of millions may hang on your actions and statements.”

Greek Party Syriza’s Rise Fueled by Professors-Turned-Politicians

“Mr. Lapavitsas describes the party’s platform as ‘a Keynesian program with redistribution attached, with some Marxist view of the world.’ He adds: ‘We are not ashamed of that.’  In the tradition of John Maynard Keynes, Syriza advocates public spending to reignite economic growth. Greece can afford to spend more if some of its debt is forgiven by other countries.  Nikolaos Chountis, a Syriza candidate in Athens, ticks off the party’s spending priorities: food and electricity subsidies for impoverished households, a pension boost for the poorest retirees, a hike in the minimum wage and tax cuts for low earners.”

Missouri Governor to Triple National Guard Presence in St. Louis

“The governor said about 2,200 National Guardsmen will be in the region, up from about 700 last night.  The governor said National Guard troops on Monday were protecting public property and key infrastructure, but would be deployed in protecting homes and businesses on Tuesday.  Protesters Monday night had set police cruisers on fire, smashed windows and looted stores, while police responded by firing nonlethal munitions and tear gas at crowds. By morning, more than 20 businesses were burned and more than 60 people were arrested.”

Huge US Weapons Cache Stolen in Libya Now in al-Qaida Hands [2013]

“U.S. officials said on Wednesday that a huge cache of American weapons stolen in Libya over the summer was far larger than once thought. The weapons are now with al-Qaida and other terrorist groups linked to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to news reports.  The highly sensitive military equipment was stolen in overnight raids on a military training post used by U.S. Special Forces outside Tripoli.  The 12-member team was pulled from Libya in August because of the thefts.  The missing equipment now includes dozens of highly armored vehicles, called GMVs.  Outfitted with GPS technology, the vehicles have weapon mounts and can accommodate smoke-grenade launchers, they said.”

FBI created fake Seattle Times Web page to nab bomb-threat suspect

“The FBI in Seattle created a fake news story on a bogus Seattle Times web page to plant software in the computer of a suspect in a series of bomb threats to Lacey’s Timberline High School in 2007, according to documents obtained by the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) in San Francisco.  The deception was publicized Monday when Christopher Soghoian, the principal technologist for the American Civil Liberties Union in Washington, D.C., revealed it on Twitter.   In an interview, Soghoian called the incident ‘outrageous’ and said the practice could result in ‘significant collateral damage to the public trust’ if law enforcement begins co-opting the media for its purposes.”

GOP Blames Obama for ISIS Infiltration Threat From Mexico

“Responding to a question from Sen. John McCain, Francis Taylor, undersecretary for intelligence and analysis at the Department of Homeland Security, said on Wednesday that ISIS has discussed entering the United States at the South Texas border. ‘There have been Twitter and social media exchanges among ISIL adherents across the globe speaking about that as a possibility,’ Taylor told the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. McCain had asked about ‘recent reports on Twitter and Facebook of messages that would urge infiltration into the U.S. across our southwestern border.’ ‘Certainly any infiltration across our border would be a threat,’ Taylor said.”

Ex-Fed chief Bernanke denied loan to refinance his home

“Former Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke revealed last week that he was turned down when he tried to refinance his home loan.  ‘I think it’s entirely possible’ that lenders ‘may have gone a little bit too far on mortgage credit conditions,’ he said.  Bernanke also told the conference of the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing and Care that the first-time homebuyer market is ‘not what it should be.’  Bernanke was paid $199,750 annually as head of the central bank and reportedly earned $250,000 in March for his first public speaking engagement since stepping down in January.  He also reportedly received $1 million in a deal to write his memoirs.”
