“Cash became the crime.  The government figured out that drug sales weren’t done on Visa or MasterCard, but in currency.  Evil currency. So they criminalized cash.  But that still wasn’t enough to feed the hunger of the government and starve the drug kingpins, so then the ‘instrumentalities of the crime’ was conceived. If you drove to a drug deal, the car was an instrumentality. If the drug deal happened in a house, the house was the instrumentality. And even if there was no drug deal at all, it was all an instrumentality or substituted proceeds.  Take the profit out of crime.  This became as important, if not more so, than proving the existence of a crime at all.  And it was so much easier.”

Ukraine ratifies E.U. pact but backs expanded autonomy in rebel areas

“Ukraine’s parliament ratified an agreement Tuesday to deepen economic and political ties with the European Union, moving ahead with a plan that sparked an uprising by pro-Russian rebels and led to Moscow’s annexation of the Crimea peninsula.  But in a move seeking to ease tensions, Ukrainian lawmakers also passed legislation to grant greater autonomy to eastern Ukraine. It’s part of a wider peace deal seeking to end a conflict that has claimed more than 2,600 lives and sharply escalated tensions between Russia and the West.  The E.U. must now take steps to formalize the association with Ukraine, which would deepen economic and political ties with the 27-nation bloc.”

“You won’t believe the idea that America’s quintessential foreign policy establishment organ is floating now.  Or maybe you will.  In its September/October issue, Foreign Affairs wanders away from the calamity of its interventionist foreign policy consensus to offer equally calamitous interventionist monetary advice.  The publication offers a piece instructing the Federal Reserve to give the money it prints directly to the people.  The Fed, according to this incompletely thought-out option, could generate consumer spending in this way, bypassing financial institutions like banks and employers altogether.  It is an idea of Keynesian absurdity.”

The FBI just used facial recognition to catch a fugitive of 14 years

“Neil Stammer speaks nearly a dozen languages, so when he fled the country using false papers, it left law enforcement with few clues as to where he might be. The case languished for 14 years until this January, when a new facial recognition system found a face that matched Stammer’s. The Diplomatic Security Service had his face on file under the name Kevin Hodges, thanks to a recent visa application to the US Embassy in Nepal. The DSS contacted the FBI, and a few months later Stammer was in custody. In Stammer’s case, both of the photos were passport-style photos taken from close range, with the subject directly facing the cameras.”
