Vietnamese Take to Streets to Protest China Oil Rig

Vietnam’s communist government allowed thousands of citizens to protest in the nation’s biggest cities to denounce a Chinese oil rig placed in contested waters that has led to clashes between ships from the two countries.  Vietnam said Chinese boats rammed its vessels, fired water cannons and used low-flying aircraft in a confrontation over the rig close to the Paracel Islands that both countries claim. China the next day accused Vietnamese ships of provoking the clash by crashing into its boats.  The U.S. has criticized China for taking ‘provocative’ and ‘unilateral’ actions. Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said that China had engaged in ‘dangerous conduct and intimidation.'”

Fed Warns Of Crackdown On Leveraged-Buyout Deals

“The Federal Reserve warned it may need to take additional action to rein in banks’ funding of corporate takeovers after observing continued deterioration of lending standards this year.  The statements were the latest warning that U.S. regulators want banks to end practices they see as risky in so-called leveraged lending markets. The Fed and the Office of the Comptroller told banks in March 2013 to avoid funding takeover deals that would leave companies with high levels of debt.  Federal Reserve Chairwoman Janet Yellen said that some bank-underwriting standards had loosened as a response to investor appetite for additional risk, a byproduct of low interest rates.

New European ruling game-changing for U.S. companies

“The judgment was handed down by the Luxembourg-based Court of Justice of the European Union. The court ruled that Google, if asked to do so, must amend links to information shown to be outdated or information deemed to be irrelevant.  The case followed complaints from a man in Spain who argued that when Google’s search results revealed details published in a local newspaper about an auction of his repossessed home, that infringed on his privacy rights.  The European high court effectively said that any company that gathers or indexes information about European citizens is subject to its laws, even if the company has no physical presence in that nation.”

EFF Urges Congress to Strengthen USA FREEDOM Act

“The USA FREEDOM Act includes a definition of call detail records which excludes cell site location data, a provision that will help safeguard the location privacy of millions of Americans from mass NSA surveillance. However, we remain concerned that the bill allows prospective collection—collection of records that have not yet been created—up to 180 days.  The bill does not address the collection authority under Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act. The bill fails to fix the ‘backdoor loophole,’ in which the NSA interprets the law to allow searches of the data collected under Section 702 for the purpose of finding communications of a United States person.”

The Cannabis Conspiracy?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“It suited Modern Internationalism to put people in jail for using drugs. But that was in the 20th century. In the 21st century, it suits our leaders to legalize drugs and then build a UN-oriented globalist infrastructure to ‘cure’ addicts.  It is always in the service of globalism. Policies, moral pronouncements – war itself – these are nothing but tools intended to create specific outcomes.  Ultimately, we are seeing further justifications for a new kind of directed history.  It starts with cannabis, but perhaps it doesn’t end there …”

Uruguay’s New Regs: Unreasonable on Purpose?

the-daily-bell-top-logo61

“Uruguay is now in the business of fixing prices for an entire industry. In fact, this can only lead to a renewed black market. If Uruguay continues along this path it probably won’t much reduce black-market trafficking because the black market will supply a similar and even better product at a lower price without demanding that people sign some sort of public document attesting to their use of the drug. The whole point of this exercise supposedly was to remove the criminal influence from the production and ingestion of cannabis. After beginning splendidly, Uruguay officials have acted in a way that reverses most of the benefits that could have been expected from ‘legalization.'”

US Sentencing Commission Votes to Cut Drug Sentences

“The US Sentencing Commission (USSC) voted unanimously Thursday to reduce sentences for most federal drug trafficking defendants. The move comes as the federal prison population continues to increase, driven in large part by drug offenders, even as prison populations in the states are on the decline.  USSC said the changes would affect about 70% of federal drug trafficking defendants and would result in an average sentence decrease of 11 months. That means the average federal drug trafficking sentence will drop from just over five years to just over four years.  There are currently more than 216,000 federal prisoners. Slightly more than half are doing time for drug offenses.”

UN Condemns America on Human Rights Violations

How would you like to live in a country that tortures prisoners?  That reads its residents’ mail and monitors their phone conversations? That executes its own citizens without trial? That murders innocent people in foreign countries on a regular basis? Whose government manipulates courts and other legal processes to ensure that criminals are never held to account, while whistle blowers are punished severely?  If you’re an American, you already do.  Many Americans tend to adopt an attitude of ‘if you’ve got nothing to hide, you’ve got nothing to worry about,’ as if our government’s rights violations are directed only at bad apples. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

California’s anti-game senator Leland Yee arrested for corruption

“In a bid to become Secretary of State, Yee apparently ‘solicited money from undercover FBI agents’ and engaged in ‘a discussion with the undercover agents about an illegal gun-trafficking deal.’   Yee represents District 8, which includes video game development hotbeds like San Francisco and San Mateo County. Gamers know him as the man who put forth the much-publicized violent game law that the United States Supreme Court struck down in 2011.  ‘Gamers have got to just quiet down,’ Yee said at the time. ‘Gamers have no credibility in this argument. This is all about their lust for violence and the industry’s lust for money. This is a billion-dollar industry. This is about their self-interest.'”

Goldman Sachs: Bitcoin Isn’t a Currency But Tech Holds Promise

“A new Goldman Sachs report on digital currencies has found that while bitcoin is not a practical currency, its underlying ledger technology could hold promise.  In addition to its own researchers and scholars, Goldman Sachs also tapped a number of bitcoin advocates and critics, as well as industry veterans. Goldman Sachs envisions a future with more regulation and more security, but more regulation is not something that many in the bitcoin community desire at this point.  However, institutional investors will not get on board without a bulletproof regulatory framework and the collapse of Mt. Gox is bound to silence many critics.”
