UN orders its inspectors out of Syria over fears of U.S. air strike

“UN weapons inspectors have been ordered to leave Syria early amid mounting anticipation of US-led military strikes. The inspectors had not been due to deliver their findings for a week at least, with the analysis of samples a painstaking task. The demand for a rushed early assessment reflects the fraught atmosphere at the UN triggered by US threats to launch punitive air strikes within days. The accelerated departure of the UN weapons inspectors was reminiscent of similar hasty exit from Iraq more than a decade ago, after receiving a tip-off from western intelligence agencies that US air strikes against Saddam Hussein’s regime were imminent.”

“When Will They Learn?”

“In a conservative administration, a government will institute greater social controls. In the following liberal administration, the government will institute greater economic controls. And the police state will be increased under both administrations. The net effect is overall increased dominance by government. Under the two-party system, this dominance is not only tolerated by the populace, but encouraged. The day never comes when a people convince their government to ‘lighten up.’ Relief only comes when an overly-powerful governmental system collapses under its own weight.”

U.S. demands release of Americans imprisoned in Iran

“US Secretary of State John Kerry on Wednesday called for the release of two American dual citizens jailed in Iran, saying Washington was ‘deeply concerned’ about their fate. He also again requested information on an American who went missing in Iran in March 2007. The United States is ‘deeply concerned about the fate of dual US citizens Amir Hekmati and Saeed Abedini,’ Kerry said in a statement.”

UK gathers warplanes, military hardware in Cyprus base near Syria

“‘Warplanes and military transporters’ have reportedly been moved to Britain’s Akrotiri airbase in Cyprus in the latest sign of the allied forces’ preparations for a military strike on Syria amid bellicose rhetoric against the Syrian government.  Two commercial pilots who regularly fly from Larnaca, Cyprus, claim to have spotted C-130 transport planes from their own aircraft and small formations of possibly European fighter jets from their radar screens, according to the Guardian.  Akrotiri airbase is less than 100 miles from Syria, making it a likely hub for a bombing campaign. Residents near the airfield confirmed to the Guardian that ‘activity there has been much higher than normal over the past 48 hours.'”

U.S. and China announce cybersecurity collaboration amid hacking dispute

“China and the US, which are embroiled in a bitter dispute over hacking, have agreed to set up a cybersecurity working group, US Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday. ‘All of us, every nation, has an interest in protecting its people, protecting its rights, protecting its infrastructure,’ he told reporters on a visit to Beijing. ‘Cybersecurity affects everybody,’ he said. ‘It affects airplanes in the sky, trains on their tracks, it affects the flow of water through dams, it affects transportation networks, power plants, it affects the financial sector, banks, financial transactions. So we are going to work immediately on an accelerated basis on cyber.'”

New York Times says outage ‘most likely result of malicious external attack’

“The New York Times said its website went down Tuesday after what appeared to be a ‘malicious external attack.’ A security researcher said there were indications that the Syrian Electronic Army, which has attacked several media organizations, was the culprit. Matt Johansen of WhiteHat Security said in a tweet that the technical aspects of the website during the outage were ‘pointing to Syrian Electronic Army.’  The Washington Post website was hacked this month in an attack blamed on the Syrian Electronic Army, a group that backs embattled strongman Bashar al-Assad.”

Al-Qaeda ‘targeting European rail network’: report

“Al-Qaeda is plotting attacks on Europe’s high-speed rail network, German mass circulation daily Bild reported, citing intelligence sources. The extremist group could plant explosives on trains and tunnels or sabotage tracks and electrical cabling, said Bild. Bild said the information came from the National Security Agency (NSA) in the United States, which had listened in to a conference call involving top Al-Qaeda operatives. The attacks on Europe’s rail network was a ‘central topic’ of this call, Bild said. Authorities in Germany have responded to the threat with discrete measures such as deploying plain-clothed police officers at key stations and on main routes.”

Leaping to Conclusions

google-search-header2

“When I read this news item, I was shocked at the flimsiness of it as a justification for the US to attack Syria. What the nation’s political leaders are saying is so irrational, so superficial, so hasty and so ill-considered. I feel as if the country is being run by people lacking in stability of temperament, emotional control, judgment, patience, experience, understanding and maturity. I don’t think they understand how to do good via neutrality. They are men of power, action, and intervention, who do not understand the consequences of their actions. They seem to have made up their minds and now do not want to be bothered by anything that might possibly paint a different picture.”

United Nations to question U.S. over spying allegations

“The United Nations will approach the US government over a report by a German magazine that US intelligence spied on video conferences by top UN officials, a spokesman said Monday.  ‘We are aware of the reports, and we intend to be in touch with the relevant authorities on this,’ a UN spokesman, Farhan Haq, told reporters, adding that this meant the US administration.  Haq told reporters the 1961 Vienna Convention on diplomatic relations has become ‘well established international law, therefore member states are expected to act accordingly to protect the inviolability of diplomatic missions.'”

German chancellor Angela Merkel to make campaign stop in Dachau

“Angela Merkel will become the first German chancellor to visit the former Nazi concentration camp Dachau as she steps up warnings about the far-right threat while campaigning for a third term.  In her weekly podcast, Merkel on Saturday warned ahead of the visit that Europeans must remain vigilant against Holocaust deniers and right-wing extremists.  Merkel will hold a campaign rally the same evening in the town of Dachau ahead of a Bavarian state poll and the German general election next month.  [A recent Neo-Nazi murder trial] exposed serious failings of the German security services, which had focused their investigation almost entirely on Germany’s large Turkish community.”
