The imposition of the tax is surely going to cause a flight of these funds out of Cyprus to a more stable tax haven–which is likely to destabilize the Cypriot banking sector even more.”

U.S. flies B-52 bombers over South Korea

“The United States said it was flying training missions of nuclear-capable B-52 bombers over South Korea, in a clear signal to North Korea at a time of escalating military tensions.  The flights — part of annual joint South Korea-US military exercises — should be seen as underscoring US commitment and capacity to defend Seoul against an attack from the North, Pentagon spokesman George Little said.  B-52s have taken part in annual exercises before, but Little said the Pentagon wanted to underline their use this time given the current, heightened tensions, and he added that further B-52 flights would be carried out.”

JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon is accused of hiding information about big losses

“Washington dealt a double blow Thursday to JPMorgan Chase as a Senate report accused its iconic chief executive of hiding information about a massive loss from regulators while the Federal Reserve unexpectedly said it had found a ‘weakness’ in the bank’s capital plans.  The report takes the bank to task for hiding losses for three months last year, overstating the value of its trading positions and ignoring red flags. When regulators grew concerned, JPMorgan withheld information about the nature of the portfolio, Senate investigators say.”

White House denies claims of collusion with the Taliban

“The White House on Monday strongly rejected allegations from Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the United States was colluding with the Taliban to justify the presence of US troops in the country.  ‘That’s categorically false, and nobody believes it,’ White House spokesman Jay Carney said when asked about Karzai’s remarks.  Karzai had charged that Taliban bombings helped the United States argue for a long-term military presence and that Washington was holding ‘daily’ talks with the insurgents behind the backs of his government.”
