Spain: Unemployment For Under 25s Over 55%

“Overall, Spain’s unemployment rate has risen to its highest level since measurements began in the 1970s, as a prolonged recession and deep spending cuts have left almost six million people out of work at the end of last year.  The nationwide jobless total rose 1% to 26.02% in the fourth quarter of 2012, or 5.97 million people, according to the National Statistics Institute.  More than 2,000 Spaniards a day joined the dole queue in the last three months of 2012.  The results mean in Q4 there were 8.33 million Spanish households in which every potential worker was unemployed.”

Worldwide unemployment hits new high

“Five years after the global financial crisis hit, unemployment numbers continue to soar, with a record 202 million people worldwide expected to be officially jobless this year, the International Labour Organization said Tuesday.  Last year saw a clear resurgence of the crisis, the UN’s labour body said in its annual report on global employment trends, pointing out that jobless numbers rose by four million to 197 million in 2012.  Last year, the global youth unemployment rate stood at 12.6 percent, and it was expected to rise to 12.9 percent by 2017, according to ILO.”

Women to assume combat roles in U.S. military

“Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta issued an order on Wednesday removing the military’s ban on women in combat roles.  Panetta’s order overturns a 1994 rule barring women from combat roles in the military and directs military officials to begin crafting a plan to fully integrate all of the jobs currently available.  The military loosened some rules on women in combat last February, saying an additional 14,000 jobs in the Army and Marine Corps were being opened up to women, but not all.  Wednesday’s order should do exactly that, the AP noted, opening an additional 230,000 jobs — including special forces roles — that were not previously available to women.”

Torture of prisoners persists in Afghanistan: UN

“The UN issued a follow-up to a report on torture a year ago, as Kabul seeks full control over prisons and prisoners from NATO’s International Security Assistance Force despite the misgivings of the US-led ISAF.  Other forms of torture included hanging suspects by the wrists from chains for long periods and threatening them with sexual violence, the UN mission in Afghanistan said in its 139-page analysis released late Sunday.  Many of those tortured to extract confessions were children under the age of 18, it said.”

Food prices may be catalyst for 2013 revolutions

“The easiest prediction to make for 2013 is that everything we eat will once again rise sharply in price. So where will the revolutions start this year? Keep an eye on Algeria and Greece — and if you want to feel very nervous, Russia and China. And if you are smart, keep your money out of those countries as well.  The link between the cost of feeding your family and political turmoil is too well-established to be ignored. We saw it most recently with the Arab Spring of 2011. The uprisings that deposed the autocracies of the Middle East had their roots in food inflation.”

What’s Inside America’s Banks?

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/mag-article-large1.jpg

“Some four years after the 2008 financial crisis, public trust in banks is as low as ever. Sophisticated investors describe big banks as ‘black boxes’ that may still be concealing enormous risks—the sort that could again take down the economy. A close investigation of a supposedly conservative bank’s financial records uncovers the reason for these fears—and points the way toward urgent reforms.”

Saving the rhino with U.S. military surveillance drones

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/rhinos_shutterstock1.jpg

“A rhino farmer in South Africa is planning to use surveillance drones designed for the US military to combat poachers who are driving the animals towards extinction.  Clive Vivier, cofounder of the Zululand rhino reserve in KwaZulu-Natal province, said he has been granted permission by the US state department to buy the state-of-the-art Arcturus T-20 drone.  He is now seeking clearance from local civil aviation authorities to put 30 of the drones in South African skies.  He appealed for the US, UK or other countries to help raise the necessary funds.”

U.S. warns Egypt of return to ‘bad old days’ of Mubarak

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/12/Egypt-protesters-via-AFP2.jpg

“The United States warned Tuesday there must be no return to the ‘bad old days’ of the Mubarak era in Egypt, as the army there called for talks to resolve a crisis over a constitutional referendum.  ‘We continue to have deep concerns about the situation in Egypt,’ State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.  Tens of thousands of protesters filled Cairo streets to demonstrate for and against the referendum called for Saturday on a draft constitution backed by President Mohamed Morsi and his Islamist allies.”

As Europe Plots Closer Ties, Britain Mulls Split

“German Chancellor Angela Merkel called last week for turning the European Commission, which currently drafts legislation and regulates competition, into ‘something like a European government.’ The phrase alone rattles the teeth of many British politicians, who have warned for decades of the specter of a European superstate.  Last month, Cameron faced a huge rebellion within his own party as 81 of the 303 Conservative lawmakers defied his orders and voted to hold an urgent referendum on EU membership in 2015.”

Egypt protesters tear-gassed as world concern mounts

http://freedomwat.ch/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Protesters-run-from-tear-gas-fired-by-police-during-clashes-in-Cairos-Tahrir-Square-e13537670264842.jpg

“Anti-riot police fired tear gas on Saturday to disperse protesters camped out in Cairo’s Tahrir Square as Western governments voiced growing concern over Islamist President Mohamed Morsi’s assumption of sweeping powers.  The president already held both and executive and legislative powers and Thursday’s decree puts him beyond judicial oversight until a new constitution has been ratified in a referendum.”
