Cops Raid Little Girls’ “Illegal” Lemonade Stand, Shut it Down

“Last week, police in Texas heroically saved the town from likes of two young girls who attempted to open a black market lemonade stand. The girls, one 7-year-old and one 8-year-old, dared to try to raise money to buy a Father’s day present for their dad by setting up a lemonade stand in their neighborhood.  Andria and Zoey Green told ABC affiliate KLTV they were trying to raise about $100 for a Father’s Day present. They wanted to take him to Splash Kingdom.  Over the weekend, the two young entrepreneurs took to the streets with their delicious batch of homemade lemonade and began to provide willing customers with their product.”

UnitedHealth warns it may exit Obamacare plans

“The nation’s largest health insurer warned Thursday that it may pull out of the Obamacare exchanges after 2016 – forcing more than a half million people to find other coverage – after low enrollment and high usage cost the company millions of dollars.  The possible move by UnitedHealth Group raises new questions about the viability of President Obama’s signature health law and follows the departure of more than half of the non-profit insurance cooperatives this year. If UnitedHealth drops out, consumers would lose one of the lowest-cost plans available in much of the country, and some wonder how smaller insurers could fill the void.”

California collects, owns and sells infants’ DNA samples

“If you were born in California since 1983, the state owns your DNA.  The data of every Californian born since that year is kept in a bland office building in Richmond, a city located in the eastern section of the San Francisco Bay Area.  That data’s not just passively kept, mind you: it’s also being sold, to third parties, for research purposes.  That biometric data, taken by a heel prick at birth to screen for 80 hereditary diseases, represents a wealth of information on an individual, from eye and hair color to pre-disposition to diseases such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. Besides being sold – in purportedly de-identified form, it’s also available for law enforcement requests.”

Psychology group bans members from national security interrogations

“The American Psychological Association (APA) has approved a ban on psychologists’ involvement in national security interrogations.  The APA adopted the plan in the wake of 542-page independent investigation (PDF) that discovered psychologists worked with the Central Intelligence Agency to help silence dissent over harsh interrogation tactics being employed by the Bush administration (including torture). What’s more, the report found that APA officials colluded with military officials to adopt APA ethics rules in order to allow psychologists to be a part of tortuous interrogations in the wake of the September 11, 2001 terror attacks.”

Mississippi Cops Hogtie and Kill ‘Widespread Panic’ Concertgoer

“A video has surfaced of Mississippi Police killing a concertgoer attending the Widespread Panic performance Saturday night in a story covered earlier today by PINAC News.  The video below shows the last moments Troy Goode is seen in public, dead or alive. The witnesses recorded this video and made commentary indicative of a less than serious moment, until seeing that the 30-year-old engineer was hogtied, which their video confirms visually.  Then Southhaven police demanded they stop recording.  The witnesses even expressed fear that recording the incident would cause police to arrest them as bystanders. And they did not have the sense to record horizontally.”

Federal Court: Government Doesn’t Need a Reason to Ban Competition

“Could the government prohibit LeBron James from playing professional basketball simply to put more money in the pockets of less talented athletes?  Absolutely, said the Second Circuit Court of Appeals, in a surprising — and appalling — decision last week, upholding a nakedly anticompetitive restriction on non-dentist teeth-whiteners in Connecticut. In 2011, the Connecticut Dental Commission issued a ruling that only licensed dentists were permitted to provide certain teeth-whitening procedures. Non-dentist teeth-whiteners were threatened with up to $25,000 in fines and five years in jail per customer.”

Health Insurance Companies Seek Big Rate Increases for 2016

Health insurance companies around the country are seeking rate increases of 20 percent to 40 percent or more, saying their new customers under the Affordable Care Act turned out to be sicker than expected. Federal officials say they are determined to see that the requests are scaled back.  Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans — market leaders in many states — are seeking rate increases that average 23 percent in Illinois, 25 percent in North Carolina, 31 percent in Oklahoma, 36 percent in Tennessee and 54 percent in Minnesota, according to documents posted online by the federal government and state insurance commissioners and interviews with insurance executives.”

Standing Between You And All The Benefits Of Telemedicine

“The same organization that thinks you shouldn’t be able to get a prescription from a Teladoc doctor you have never met, thinks it’s perfectly okay for you to get a prescription from an ‘on call’ doctor who you have also never met, who is subbing in for your regular doctor and who probably isn’t looking at your medical records when he orders the prescription.  Today, as in the past, organized medicine acts as a cartel agent for the doctors.  Another opponent is Medicare. In general, the federal government won’t pay for telemedicine except under special circumstances.”

WV teacher threatened with fine for violating Obama school snack rules

“The Williamson PreK-8 teacher, who was not identified, would give her students ‘wrapped candy’ as a reward for their hard work and good behavior.  Because the practice was an alleged violation of the federal rules championed by first lady Michelle Obama, Mingo County Schools Director of Child Nutrition Kay Maynard ‘placed a call to officials at the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) to report the incident,’ the Williamson Daily News reports.  Maynard also spoke to Williamson PreK-8 principal Shannon Blackburn, telling him about the possibility of a monetary fine for the teacher.  When news spread, parents and students mobilized, collecting pennies to pay the potential fine.”

Woman Calls Suicide Hotline for Boyfriend. Cops Arrive, Kill Him.

“Earlier this month, Justin Way of St. Augustine, Florida, threatened to kill himself. He sat down on his bed, drunk, brandishing a knife that he intended to use on himself. His girlfriend, Kaitlyn Christine Lyons, called a non-emergency police number to get him help. She expected the authorities to institutionalize him for self-protection.  Instead, two sheriff’s deputies arrived, armed with assault rifles. They made Lyons wait outside while they stormed Way’s room. And then they killed him. Stories like this continue to suggest that in no circumstances—even life-threatening emergencies—should you call the police. Someone will get killed.”
