France Moves To Ban Free Drink Refills

“In a bid to curb the country’s rising obesity rate, the French parliament nearly-unanimously voted on April 1 to ban all free refills on sugary drinks.  The only drink allowed to be served in limitless quantities without charge will be water. ‘It is the role of the law to establish a framework to protect the population against a trade-upmanship that tends to make the ‘free’ surplus of food supply… an argument to attract consumers and encourage them to excessive consumption which can be harmful to health,’ the government’s official nutrition organization said in a statement.”

The big drug database in the sky: A firefighter’s legal nightmare

“In Pyle’s case, there was no evidence to suggest he had anything to do with the morphine theft that sparked the investigation. While looking through his prescription history, however, the detective felt that something wasn’t right. Eventually, Pyle heard from the Salt Lake County Attorney’s Office. His case had been screened and declined for prosecution.  Four days later, the Utah Attorney General charged Ryan Pyle with prescription drug fraud.  How can the police have such broad powers to comb through a prescription drug database?  [..] State law changes like Utah’s, however, won’t stop federal agencies like the DEA from accessing these databases without a warrant.”

State seizes 11-year-old, arrests his mother for defending medical marijuana

“A spokesman confirmed that officers had searched Banda’s home, though he denied it was a raid. He also said the initial anti-drug program was put on entirely by the school — the police had no involvement. At that event Banda’s son apparently contradicted some of the claims made about marijuana. The school then contacted the child protection agency. Police officers showed up at Banda’s at home and asked her permission to conduct a search. She refused. They then obtained a warrant and searched her home. The spokesman wouldn’t comment except to say that there was ‘evidence’ of drug activity. Banda was then arrested and her son was seized from the home.”

Federal Government Admits Marijuana Shrinks Serious Brain Tumors

“The National Institute on Drug Abuse, a research institution run by the federal government, has grudgingly admitted that marijuana is capable of killing certain cancer cells.  A publication from NIDA, revised as of April 2015, states that ‘recent animal studies have shown that marijuana can kill certain cancer cells and reduce the size of others. Evidence from one animal study suggests that extracts from whole-plant marijuana can shrink one of the most serious types of brain tumors. Research in mice showed that these extracts, when used with radiation, increased the cancer-killing effects of the radiation.'”

‘Beats paying $10K’: Uninsured opt for Obamacare fine over coverage

“A moratorium for uninsured Americans to avoid paying a tax penalty under the Affordable Care Act may not be accomplishing its desired goal, as many citizens appear to be opting to pay a fine rather than sign up for coverage.  Although it’s still early in the process—the extended deadline lapses in April—a senior executive at H&R Block said that ‘a significant percentage of taxpayers’ are opting to pay the penalty.  Separately, only 12 percent of uninsured people would buy policies if informed of the penalty, according to a survey of 3,000 adults polled by McKinsey & Co.”

7 Homeschool Children Taken Away For Unapproved Supplement

“Hal and his wife Michelle were kept outside for hours while officers searched the home with their seven children inside.  They avoid most contact with the government. The parents have home schooled their nine children, two of whom have graduated and gone on to college. The Stanleys keep to themselves, are generally self-sustained and consider themselves ‘preppers’.  As the children were removed from the home Hal and his wife Michelle say they emotionally asked who made the decision. Hal said, ‘And finally a young man from the Sheriff’s department raised his hand, ‘I did it and I’m proud of the decision’.'”

FDA sets Obamacare menu rules for food chains, other eateries

“On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration will announce that it is making final two rules that require calorie information be listed on menus and menu boards at chain restaurants, grocery store take-out counters, convenience stores, theaters, amusement parks and vending machines with 20 or more locations. The rules are required under the Affordable Care Act.  The restaurant rules take effect in one year and the vending machine rules in two years.  While there has been strong opposition from some pizza chains, theater chains and convenience store chains, the rules have strong support from the National Restaurant Association.”

Ethan Nadelmann: Why we need to end the War on Drugs

“Is the War on Drugs doing more harm than good? In a bold talk, drug policy reformist Ethan Nadelmann makes an impassioned plea to end the “backward, heartless, disastrous” movement to stamp out the drug trade. He gives two big reasons we should focus on intelligent regulation instead.”

Federal AIDS website insecurely transmitted user locations for years

“Everyone loves to hate Healthcare.gov, but there are plenty of other bad websites out there. Take, for example, AIDS.gov. The Washington Post reports that the site has failed to adhere to basic web security protocols for the past few years. As a result, anyone snooping on internet traffic could easily find the location and identity of someone searching for HIV testing facilities or other services.  The culprit is encryption — or rather, the lack thereof.  AIDS.gov and another similar government site offering HIV assistance has not used SSL encryption to maintain its users’ privacy.”

Firestone Did What Governments Have Not: Stopped Ebola In Its Tracks

“Firestone detected its first Ebola case on March 30, when an employee’s wife arrived from northern Liberia. She’d been caring for a disease-stricken woman and was herself diagnosed with the disease. Since then Firestone has done a remarkable job of keeping the virus at bay. It built its own treatment center and set up a comprehensive response that’s managed to quickly stop transmission. Dr. Brendan Flannery, the head of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s team in Liberia, has hailed Firestone’s efforts as resourceful, innovative and effective.  Currently the only Ebola cases on the sprawling, 185-square-mile plantation are in patients who come from neighboring towns.”
