“It’s true that quarantine powers have been around since the ancient world and have been invoked through U.S. history from Colonial times to the present. They are hardly questioned.  On the other hand, abuse of such powers are even more frequent. The problem is the low threshold concerning risk. Once government has the power, it can use it any way it wants. In World War I, prostitutes were routinely arrested and quarantined in the name of preventing the spread of diseases. In the 1892 typhus outbreak, it became common to arrest and quarantine any immigrant from Russia, Italy, or Ireland even without any evidence of disease.”

Obama’s New Ebola ‘Czar’ Has No Medical, Health Care Background

“President Barack Obama on Friday turned to a trusted adviser to lead the nation’s Ebola response as efforts to clamp down on any possible route of infection from three Texas cases expanded, reaching a cruise ship at sea and multiple airline flights.  Facing renewed criticism of his handling of the Ebola risk, Obama will make Ron Klain, a former chief of staff to Vice President Joe Biden, his point man on fighting Ebola at home and in West Africa. Klain will report to national security adviser Susan Rice and to homeland security adviser Lisa Monaco, the White House said.  Klain does not have a medical or a health care background.”

Despite fever, CDC cleared Ebola-infected nurse for airline flight

“A federal health official says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cleared a nurse who has Ebola to fly from Cleveland, Ohio, to Dallas.  CDC spokesman David Daigle says now-infected Amber Joy Vinson spoke with the CDC official responsible for monitoring her health before she boarded the flight Monday.  CBS News reported that Vinson called the CDC several times before flying, saying that she did have a fever with a temperature of 99.5 degrees.  One health official told CBS News that ‘somebody dropped the ball.’  Vinson is the second Dallas nurse to become infected after treating a Liberian man who died of Ebola last week.”

Pressure to legalise marijuana after Australian boy denied treatment

“The parents of a three-year-old boy and a Melbourne hospital clashed after doctors stopped administering cannabis oil to the child because of concerns about legal ramifications.  They turned to cannabis oil to treat their son Cooper’s seizures about a year ago, after doctors told them they had no way of stopping them. They said it had been highly effective.  But after at first helping to administer the drug, the ABC said, hospital staff warned [the parents] that if they continued to give Cooper the oil, police would be informed.  [The parents] had their house raided in July after telling Channel Seven’s Sunday Night program about using marijuana oil on Cooper.”

It’s time to destroy the U.S. smallpox reserves [2011]

“Smallpox isn’t completely gone. That’s because two large government laboratories, one in the U.S. and one in Russia, insist on maintaining stocks of the smallpox virus (called variola). In the U.S., the smallpox virus is kept at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta. In Russia, it’s at the Vector lab in Siberia.  Why keep this incredibly deadly virus around? The scientists at the CDC and in Russia give the same answer: more research is needed to develop better vaccines, to protect us from a bioterrorism attack. They’ve been making this argument for 30 years now, but they are wrong. The only thing they need to do is to destroy their stocks of smallpox, and wipe out this virus once and for all.”

Oops: Forgotten smallpox discovered in old storage room near D.C.

“National Institutes of Health workers preparing to move a lab in Bethesda, Md., found an unwelcome surprise in a storage room this month: six vials of smallpox.  The vials labeled variola — a name for the smallpox virus — were found July 1 ‘in an unused portion of a storage room’ and seem to date to the 1950s, the CDC said. They were freeze-dried, intact and sealed, forgotten and packed away in a cardboard box, officials said.  The vials were ‘immediately secured’ in a containment lab, then transported via government aircraft Monday to the CDC’s containment facility in Atlanta, it said. No documentation was found to explain how or why the virus was left in the Maryland facility.”

Investigation Sought On Obama’s No-Bid Contract for Smallpox Drug [2011]

“A top Senate Democrat has requested an investigation into the Obama administration’s awarding a $433 million no-bid contract to the maker of an experimental smallpox vaccine.  Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., says the five-year contract from the Department of Health and Human Services to Siga Technologies –  a New York company run by a major Democratic donor — raises questions about a conflict of interest and the potential waste of precious taxpayer funds.  In a letter to HHS inspector general Daniel Levinson on Monday, McCaskill expressed worry over the hefty price of the drug (reportedly $255 per dose) because the company had not been not forced to compete for the contract.”

GlaxoSmithKline Starts First Human Trials For Ebola Vaccine In Africa

“The trials are expedited and aim to achieve in months something that generally takes years. Even the trial setup period was just two months long, compared to the six months to one year time period it generally takes to start a vaccine trial. GSK is also starting production of 10,000 doses of its vaccines simultaneously with the trials from the funds provided by UK’s Wellcome Trust and other donor organizations. The rationale behind starting production before trial results is that if the vaccine is successful it can immediately be provided to health workers in the affected regions without any unnecessary delays.”

GlaxoSmithKline fined $3bn for bribing doctors to increase drugs sales [2012]

“The company encouraged sales reps in the US to mis-sell three drugs to doctors and lavished hospitality and kickbacks on those who agreed to write extra prescriptions, including trips to resorts in Bermuda, Jamaica and California.  Psychiatrists and their partners were flown to five-star hotels, on all-expenses-paid trips where speakers, paid up to $2,500 to attend, gave presentations on the drugs. They could enjoy diving, golf, fishing and other extra activities arranged by the company.  GSK also paid for articles on its drugs to appear in medical journals and ‘independent’ doctors were hired by the company to promote the treatments, according to court documents.”
