U.S. to Commit $500 Million, Deploy 3,000 Troops in Ebola Fight

“The unprecedented response will include the deployment of 3,000 U.S. military forces and more than $500 million in defense spending drawn from funding normally used for efforts like the war in Afghanistan, senior administration officials outlined Monday. Obama has called America’s response to the disease a ‘national-security priority,’ with top foreign policy and defense officials leading the government’s efforts.  The officials said Obama believes that in order to best contain the disease, the U.S. must ‘lead’ the global response effort. In the CDC’s largest deployment in response to an epidemic, more than 100 officials from the agency are currently on the ground and $175 million has been allocated.”

Not Just the VA: Another example of government failure in healthcare

“Jay Littlewolf is a Native American and a member of the Northern Cheyenne reservation in Montana. He’s talking about the Indian Health Service (IHS), another federal government-operated healthcare system. When the scandal broke about the VA, the media, pundits, and politicians quickly concluded that the remedy for the VA’s ills was reform: more funding, regulation, and accountability. But the occurrence of the same problems at the IHS suggests that these sorts of problems may be endemic to government-run systems. Unfortunately, few are stepping up to recommend a more permanent fix than to enact reforms to the existing systems.”

40% of U.S. on Benefits; More Receive Benefits Than Full-Time-Employed

“Let’s take the 2012 welfare total of 109,631,000 and add the 6 million Obamacare Medicaid expansion and the 17 million who get Obamacare subsidies and you have a minimum of 126 million receiving some sort of means-tested welfare vs. 118.5 million who ‘usually’ work full time.  The 2013 US Population Estimate is 316 million.  Using 316 million as a rough estimate of the 2014 population (it would likely be higher) and 126 million on welfare (that number is also higher, perhaps way higher), about 40% of the country is on some form of means-tested welfare, up from 35.4% at the end of 2012.  Over 50% gets welfare or some other form of non-means-tested assistance.”

4.5 million electronic health records from 20 hospitals compromised

Community Health Systems Inc. announced Monday that 4.5 million patients’ non-medical records have been compromised in a cyber attack that occurred over April and June.  Community Health Systems and the cyber security firm Mandiant believe the attacker was an ‘Advanced Persistent Threat’ group originating from China that was able to bypass security measures and successfully copy and transfer data using sophisticated malware and technology.  The data that was compromised includes patient names, addresses, birth dates, telephone numbers, and Social Security numbers. The company has said it would offer identity-theft protection services for those affected.”

Fewer Uninsured Face Fines, as Obamacare Penalty Exemptions Swell

“Almost 90% of the nation’s 30 million uninsured won’t pay a penalty under the Affordable Care Act in 2016 because of a growing batch of exemptions to the health-coverage requirement.  The architects of the health law wanted most Americans to carry insurance or pay a penalty. But an analysis by the CBO and the Joint Committee on Taxation said most of the uninsured will qualify for one or more exemptions, including suffering domestic violence, experiencing substantial property damage from a fire or flood, and having a canceled insurance plan, on top of exemptions carved out for groups including illegal immigrants, members of Native American tribes and certain religious sects.”

White House To Ignore Court Ruling, Keep Issuing Obamacare Subsidies

“The Obama administration will continue handing out Obamacare subsidies to federal exchange customers despite a federal court’s ruling Tuesday that the subsidies are illegal.  A D.C. Court of Appeals panel ruled Tuesday morning that customers in the 36 states that didn’t establish their own exchange and use HealthCare.gov instead cannot be given premium tax credits, according to the text of the Affordable Care Act itself.  But White House press secretary Josh Earnest said that while the case continues to be battled out in the courts, the administration will continue to dole out billions in tax credits to federally-run exchange customers.”

NHS introduces £1,500 talking plate which warns fat families [2011]

“Doctors have a new weapon in the battle to beat obesity – a talking plate that tells people not to bolt their food.  The Mandometer monitors the amount of food leaving the plate and tells users who gobble: ‘Please eat more slowly.’  Now the £1,500 Swedish device is to be used in an NHS initiative to help hundreds of obese families lose weight.  Professor Julian Hamilton-Shield, who is leading the initiative, said obese children and adolescents using the Mandometer ate from 12 to 15 per cent less per meal at the end of the 12-month trial.   Six months after they stopped using the device they still ate less and continued to lose weight.”

How many bites do YOU take per day? New device helps you keep track

Dieters already track calories and steps, and now researchers have developed a device that they can wear on their wrists to count the number of bites they take of their food. Researchers at South Carolina’s Clemson University say that The Bite Monitor measures subtle wrist motions to detect bites with what they claim is 90per cent accuracy – and helps users get to the ‘optimum’ 100.  ‘It’s a little bit like a pedometer for your mouth,’ Eric Muth, a psychology professor who created the device with computer-engineering professor Adam Hoover, told The Wall Street Journal.   The concept will soon be tested in a study funded by the National Institutes of Health.”

Feds attack FedEx on behalf of Big Pharma

“Big Pharma obviously benefits if online competitors are choked out, but turning FedEx into an arm of law enforcement has advantages for the federal government as well. If federal agents searched private mail without warrants or probable cause, people would cry ‘Fourth Amendment!’  But private shippers are not bound by constitutional restraints. The ‘right’ to check packages can be written into the business agreement that customers sign. If a customer objects, then he is free to go elsewhere. By controlling FedEx policy, the DOJ would be able to search packages in absentia and make targeted arrests if illegal contents are found.”

Medical Marijuana Research Hits Wall of U.S. Law

“Though more than one million people are thought to use the drug to treat ailments ranging from cancer to seizures to hepatitis C and chronic pain, there are few rigorous studies showing whether the drug is a fruitful treatment for those or any other conditions.  In the case of marijuana, restrictions are even greater than for other controlled substances.  To obtain the drug legally, researchers like Dr. Sisley must apply to the Food and Drug Administration, the Drug Enforcement Administration and the National Institute on Drug Abuse — which, citing a 1961 treaty obligation, administers the only legal source of the drug for federally sanctioned research, at the University of Mississippi.”
