No Containment in U.S. Health Costs

“One potential cause for the spike in health care spending was the influx of insured patients due to the rollout of health care exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Of those who enrolled through the exchanges, 6.7 million were eligible for Medicaid coverage. Many of them would be receiving care through managed Medicaid programs, which are typically operated by private insurers under contract through the states. That could create a significant spike in spending since most of the insurers operating those plans are paid per patient, per month, regardless of whether or not the patient is actually seen by a health care provider.”

59% of US employers will raise health care premiums in 2014

“More employees are getting hit with higher health insurance premiums and co-payments, and many don’t have the money to cover unexpected medical expenses, a new report finds.  More than half of companies (56%) increased employees’ share of health care premiums or co-payments for doctors’ visits in 2013, and 59% of employers say they intend to do the same in 2014.  Employees are worried about covering their medical costs: 49% have less than $1,000 to pay for unexpected out-of-pocket medical expenses.   The Kaiser Family Foundation finds that health care premiums have increased 80% since 2003, nearly three times as fast as wages (31%) and inflation (27%).”

Oklahoma medical marijuana petition drive underway for November

“There’s a new push to legalize medical marijuana in Oklahoma. Supporters went door-to-door Monday afternoon in Norman to help get the needed signatures to get a proposal on the November ballot. They need more than 155,000 signatures from registered voters, and they’ve only got 90 days to get them.  ‘I talked to the legislature back in February. Nobody would hear the bill; nobody would even talk to us about it, so we are taking it to the people,’ said Norma Sapp, one of the supporters asking for signatures on Monday.  The 90-day period to get the signatures needed ends in mid-August. States Ask Feds for Bigger Budgets to Fix Obamacare Exchanges

“Few states have embraced the ideas behind the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with more enthusiasm than Maryland and Massachusetts, which adopted many of them years before the passage of the federal law. But the two now find themselves trying to fix their malfunctioning health insurance exchanges and seeking federal approval to spend more money to do so.  When states first applied for what are called Establishment Grants to build their online marketplaces, they had to predict the costs. Going over those costs requires them to resubmit plans to spend money that would have either returned to the federal government or gone to future changes.”

DC Will Tax Non-Participating Insurers To Pay For Obamacare Exchange

“Washington, D.C. will tax all insurers selling policies to district residents to fund the city’s Obamacare exchange.  The plan was proposed by DC Health Link, D.C.’s exchange. The city’s health care law marketplace was allotted $133 million in federal grants to launch, but was expected to be sustainable via a flat tax placed on each insurance plan sold through the marketplace.  When taxing those buying insurance didn’t turn out to be as lucrative as Congress had hoped, D.C. began to look at taxing those selling insurance instead. The exchange reportedly opted to tax all insurers, including those who deliberately chose to stay out of the risky Obamacare exchange, to lower the cost per-insurance company.”

House Votes to Make It Easier to Fire VA Officials Involved in Scandal

“The House voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to make it easier to fire senior Veterans Affairs officials involved in the healthcare scandal, just hours after President Barack Obama delivered a speech that failed to satisfy those looking to take quick action against the VA. Members passed the VA Management Accountability Act in an easy 390-33 vote — the only ‘no’ votes came from Democrats.  Passage of the bill is the latest domino to fall in the expanding healthcare scandal.  The VA recently admitted that long wait-times for health clinics contributed to the death of more than 40 veterans, and it later came out that the VA had known about these problems for years, but tried to cover up the problem.”

Phoenix VA Director Given $8,500 Bonus, Rescinded After Complaints

“Sharon Helman, the director of the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care System, ‘got an $8,500 bonus last month while there was an open [inspector general] investigation into Phoenix,’ Chairman Miller told CNN’s Jake Tapper.  It had been previously reported that Helman receivedmore than $9,000 in bonus pay in 2013 on top of her annual salary of $169,900. The VA office of inspector general began investigating the Phoenix VA for wrongdoing in December 2013, months before Helman received the additional $8,500 bonus.  Chairman Jeff Miller said that VA officials told him that the Helman’s new bonus was the result of ‘an administrative error’ made by a ‘low-level person’ in the department.”

He was paid his fat salary, he got his perks, and he figured he was doing a great job. The system won’t let bad news go up the chain of command. But this time it escaped.”

Fed ‘Biosurveillance’ Plan Seeks Direct Access to Private Health Records

“The federal government is piecing together a sweeping national ‘biosurveillance’ system that will give bureaucrats near real-time access to Americans’ private medical information in the name of national security, according to Twila Brase.  Brase warns that the NHSS proposal would allow the federal government to monitor an individual’s behavior before, during and after any government-defined health ‘incident’ – which could be anything from a local outbreak of the flu to a terrorist anthrax attack.  One of the dangers, Brase pointed out, is that this vast amount of medical data warehoused in a giant electronic database will only be available to government-approved researchers.”
