Oklahoma execution renews debate on doctors’ role in lethal injection

“A botched lethal injection in Oklahoma this week has renewed a debate on whether doctors should be banned from executions — or required to participate to make the process more humane.  Some of the nation’s 32 death penalty states mandate doctor participation — including Oklahoma — but critics say what happened there proves a doctor’s presence can’t guarantee the process will go smoothly.  The AMA says it’s unethical for doctors to be involved except in a peripheral way. That’s one reason why the number and identities of physicians who do participate are shrouded in secrecy.”

CDC director explains what he hates about electronic cigarettes

“Of all the threats to Americans’ health — a list that includes bird flu, measles and West Nile virus — few get Dr. Tom Frieden as riled up as electronic cigarettes.  As director of the CDC, Frieden has a ready-made platform for spreading his views about the dangers of vaping.  He said, ‘people have a misconception that the tobacco epidemic is a thing of the past. Tobacco still kills more Americans than any other cause. It still kills more than 1,000 people a day. As a doctor, I can tell you it kills them in really unpleasant ways — gasping for breath with emphysema, with cancer, with heart disease.’  What does that have to do with e-cigarettes?  ‘E-cigarettes are a tobacco product,’ he said.”

In the ancient Near East, it was ground into a paste with honey and inserted vaginally to ease the pain of childbirth. Caesar’s physician used the oil from seeds to alleviate earaches. Queen Victoria’s physician prescribed it for menstrual cramps. It’s ironic to contemplate that 100 years ago cannabis tinctures were widely used and doctors knew all about it and how it worked for various conditions. One hundred years later, doctors know almost nothing.”

“It’s ironic, sadly ironic that the amendments were passed in order to prevent the Thalidomide type tragedy. And here we go folic acid, a ‘B’ vitamin, was shown to prevent spina bifada and other really tragic problems in young children. Folic acid manufacturers were told if they talked about this they would be shut down because they hadn’t gone through all these hoops that pharmaceutical drugs go through.  And if you make a claim you can prevent disease in the U.S. you have to go through the FDA process because commercial speech is not protected.  So that was very sad; about 25,000 babies were probably born with these defects that they didn’t need. And many more were aborted.”

Phoenix VA officials put on leave after denial of secret wait list

“The director of the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system and two others have been placed on administrative leave amid claims of a secret waiting list and claims that 40-plus veterans died waiting for care.  The announcement Thursday by U.S. Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki came a day after officials at the Phoenix VA denied in interviews with CNN the existence of such a list, only to be called liars hours later by the top VA physician who first appeared on CNN and brought the allegations to light.  The sources said more than 1,400 veterans were placed on the purported secret list and that documents were shredded to hide the evidence.”

The Only Legal Way to Opt out of Obamacare

“My monthly health insurance premium recently increased by 25%. And my agent predicts that at the end of 2014 my premium will double.  Another reason Obamacare policies cost more is that they must provide a mandated set of benefits. Obamacare calls policies that offer benefits like reconstructive breast surgery for men ‘minimum essential coverage.’  If you’re over 65, Medicare is considered minimum essential coverage. But I’m too young for Medicare – and so are most of my clients. It turns out that the only way that an American citizen or resident can opt out of minimal essential coverage is by leaving the US and becoming a bona fide resident of another country.”

$90 million spent on now-abandoned Maryland Obamacare exchange

“Maryland’s Obamacare exchange received millions in federal taxpayer dollars to build its Affordable Care Act website and was even awarded early innovator grants that earned it even more taxpayer funding. But the website crashed on the first day of open enrollment and officials have been unable to fix it.  The late decision won’t help anyone who hoped to sign up for health insurance on the exchange for 2014. The open enrollment period in Maryland closes Friday, with a special exception for more than 18,000 people who have already requested extra time to sign up due to the website’s problems.”

Dairy industry opposes bills lifting restrictions on US raw milk sales

“The two bills, the Milk Freedom Act of 2014 and the Interstate Milk Freedom Act of 2014, are the latest salvo in an ongoing controversy between those who say they want to be able to consume unprocessed milk, straight from the cow, both for its taste and health benefits, and those who say there is too much of a public health risk.Opposing the bills are dairy industry organizations and food safety agencies.  According to the Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund website, 15 state prohibit the sale of raw milk to humans under any circumstances. The remaining 35 allow it, under a variety of circumstances. Some allow unrestricted retail sales, others only through co-ops or herd-sharing plans.”

The Battle for Self-Ownership in Medical Care

“We are working in systems where third parties call the game. This was initiated by Bismarck way back, we still have Bismarckian model which is overbearing in most of Europe. Bismarck is dead now and I think this model will probably die as well. It’s dead in Georgia, and it will die elsewhere. How can you reestablish the direct contract between patients and doctors? That’s one of the keys of achieving self-ownership for patients in so far as they can choose their doctor and also autonomy for doctors who can concentrate their work on their patients without third parties telling them what to do. That’s one way, and there’s several means of doing it.”
