World Health Organization: Daily sugar intake ‘should be halved’

“People will be advised to halve the amount of sugar in their diet, under new World Health Organization guidance.  The recommended sugar intake will stay at below 10% of total calorie intake a day, with 5% the target, says the WHO.  The suggested limits apply to all sugars added to food, as well as sugar naturally present in honey, syrups, fruit juices and fruit concentrates.  UK campaigners say it is a ‘tragedy’ that the WHO has taken 10 years to think about changing its advice.  The recommendation that sugar should account for no more than 10% of the calories in the diet, was passed in 2002.  It works out at about 50g a day for an adult of normal weight, said the WHO.”

Sugar ‘could be addictive’; UK health czar urges 20% tax

“Sugar could be addictive and the government may need to introduce a tax on it in order to combat obesity, England’s chief medical officer said on Tuesday.  Dame Sally Davies made the comments to the Commons health select committee a day ahead of an announcement from the World Health Organisation on new proposed limits for sugar consumption.  UK groups such as the Children’s Food Campaign have been lobbying for a tax on sugar in food and drinks. Doctors also supported the call for a 20% tax on sugary drinks in a report from the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges in February.”

Arizona deputies bust pot ‘compassion clubs’

“During the operation, investigators began to target a series of unlicensed medical-marijuana dispensaries known as ‘compassion clubs.’ The clubs emerged in Arizona when medical-marijuana card-holders did not have a dispensary where they could legally buy pot, but as state-sanctioned facilities opened the clubs have become obsolete and illegal.  Many of the compassion clubs were located in shopping centers, he said. Deputies seized marijuana that was baked into brownies and cookies, including Vanilla Critters, he said.  Deputies also seized automatic weapons, eight cars, a house and an ATM that contained marijuana, he said.”

NCBI is an NIH.gov electronic search engine that allows the public to instantly read the abstracts of hundreds of thousands of peer-reviewed scientific papers on virtually any subject, including an estimated 20,000 papers on cannabis alone.  So why then does the head of the National Institutes of Health purport to know so little about the science of pot?”

A low saturated fat diet ‘will not prevent heart disease or prolong life’

“Health professionals recommend following a diet low in saturated fat. But a leading US cardiovascular scientist says that adopting such a diet does not curb heart disease or prolong life.  In an editorial recently published in the BMJ journal Open Heart, Dr. James DiNicolantonio says the consumption of saturated fat was first criticized back in the 1950s.  But Dr. DiNicolantonio says the findings of this research were flawed. He notes that the study author reached his conclusion using data from only six countries, choosing to exclude data from 16 countries that failed to fit his hypothesis. However, Dr. DiNicolantonio says this data ‘led us down the wrong ‘dietary road’ for decades to follow.'”

Woman with HIV alleges police bias in suit against Dearborn

“Jones’ vehicle, driven by a companion, was stopped Aug. 3, 2012, reportedly for a broken tail light and she ultimately was ticketed for marijuana possession. On the video, the officer is recorded telling Jones she was ticketed because he was ‘aggravated’ she hadn’t disclosed her HIV-positive status before the search.  The officer’s statements were ‘cruel, discriminatory as to her disability, and did cause emotional harm and embarrassment,’ according to the lawsuit.  In September, Dearborn dismissed a misdemeanor marijuana charge against Jones, her attorneys said.”

His news conference was an unusually animated showing of anti-smoking bravado, with Lushniak nearly yelling, repeatedly, ‘Enough is enough!’  ‘I can’t accept that we’re just allowing these numbers to trickle down,’ he said, in a recent interview with the AP. ‘We believe we have the public health tools to get us to the zero level.'”

Medical marijuana an issue of importance for Johnson

His reasons are due to special interests like district attorneys, and he has also stated that his church did not favor it.  Interestingly, Barrington also has a private prison in his district, and received over $9,000 in campaign contributions from the private prison industry.  When Red Dirt Report asked Johnson if she felt it would be possible for the legislature to pass a measure legalizing medicinal marijuana in the next 10 years, she asserted that the only way legalization is going to occur is through a ballot initiative.”

UK enforces terrorism law which bans public from criticising the govt

“A British citizen was held for days without charge in a London mental hospital under little-known laws which allow the police to arrest and detain anybody who voices criticism against politicians or celebrities.  The Fixated Threat Assessment Centre (FTAC) was quietly set up to identify individuals who they claim pose a direct threat to VIPs including the Prime Minister, the Cabinet and the Royal Family.  It was given sweeping powers to check more than 10,000 suspects’ files to identify mentally unstable potential ‘killers and stalkers’ with a fixation against public figures.  Using these powers, the unit can legally detain people for an indefinite period without trial, criminal charges or even evidence.”
