Government Itself Still Cited as Top U.S. Problem

“Americans start the new year with a variety of national concerns on their minds. Although none is dominant, the government, at 21%, leads the list of what Americans consider the most important problem facing the country. The economy closely follows at 18%, and then unemployment/jobs and healthcare, each at 16%. No other issue is mentioned by as much as 10% of the public; however, the federal budget deficit or debt comes close, at 8%.  Compared with a year ago, mentions of government are up slightly. Mentions of healthcare, on the other hand, have quadrupled — from 4% in January 2013 to 16% today, likely related to highly visible problems with the rollout of the 2010 healthcare law.”

Doctors fight back against new role as gun control arbiters

“Within the new Obamacare law is a provision that critics say places their doctors, nurses, and hospitals in the role of arbiters in the push for more gun control. A previous Examiner report exposed that fact.  But many doctors are fighting back. They don’t want to be gun control arbiters. They do not see such a thing as being part of their role as medical care providers. And even if they were forced into such a role, they see themselves as ill-equipped to make such decisions.  The doctors in particular cite statistics that do not match the government rhetoric concerning guns.”

Should you lose your gun rights if you visit a shrink?

“In a preternatural example of tone-deafness, an administration under fire for snooping into Americans’ privacy is now proposing to waive federal privacy laws so psychiatrists can report their gun-owning patients to the government.  The Department of Health and Human Service’s ‘notice of proposed rule-making,’ floated by the White House in a Friday media dump, would waive portions of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) to allow psychiatrists to report their patients to the FBI’s gun-ban blacklist (the NICS system) on the basis of confidential communications.”

Obamacare-nullifying bill to be introduced in Virginia

“Delegate Eric Householder, R-Berkeley, plans to introduce legislation during the 2014 session of the West Virginia House of Delegates that could nullify the Affordable Care Act in the state.  If enacted, Householder’s bill would eliminate the ACA in West Virginia and make it a state felony to attempt to enforce its provisions.  ‘As you know, for the first time in our history, Americans are going to be forced to purchase health insurance – or be penalized heavily by the federal government,’ Householder said.  According to Householder, the Constitution does not give the federal government the power to regulate intrastate commerce.”

E-cigarette bans considered across the U.S.

“Supporters of the bills say e-cigarettes may cause people to start toxic addictions and may pose unknown health risks to the public. ‘These are being touted as safer than cigarettes, but we don’t really know that,’ said Councilman James Gennaro, who co-sponsored New York City’s bill. ‘Just seeing people smoking things that look identical to cigarettes in subway cars, colleges and public libraries will tend to re-normalize the act of smoking and send the wrong message to kids.’  Local governments including Concord City and Petaluma in California, and Lee, Lenox, Stockbridge, North Attleborough, Somerset and South Hadley in Massachusetts also have similar laws, officials said.”

Canada’s ban on e-cigarettes makes no sense

“E-cigarettes with nicotine content have been banned from open sale by Health Canada decree, though they are available from underground shops or through online order from the many jurisdictions, including the U.S., where they are legal. Health Canada’s line on e-cigarettes is that they may pose health risks and have not been fully evaluated for safety, quality and efficacy. If that is the case, Health Canada should take it upon itself to research what health risks there may be, and carry out the evaluations it feels are necessary. Simply banning e-cigarettes on suspicion they might be dangerous makes no sense when conventional cigarettes are readily available at every corner store.”

Refillable electronic cigarettes face EU ban

“The European Union has struck a deal which could curb the booming market in electronic cigarettes and lead to an EU-wide ban on a popular version of the nicotine device.  In hard-fought negotiations between the 28 governments of the EU and the European parliament, both sides agreed on Tuesday that refillable e-cigarettes could be banned across Europe if three countries decided on prohibition.  The issue of e-cigarettes quickly became the most contentious aspect of new EU rules on the packaging and sales of tobacco products, although the electronic devices contain no tobacco.”

Spain bans e-cigarettes in public spaces

“‘The goal is to protect people’s health and avoid possible adverse effects,’ Health Minister Ana Mato said in a statement.  Spain already bans minors from using e-cigarettes, and the regions of Catalonia and Andalusia have recently announced similar bans on their use in public places. Governments around the world have struggled with how to regulate e-cigarettes since their emergence and growing popularity in recent years.  Supporters claim they are a less dangerous alternative to regular cigarettes and a valuable tool in helping smokers to quit.  However, the World Health Organisation has advised against them, saying their potential health risk ‘remains undetermined’.”

ObamaCare is front-loading the costs, and it is back-loading the benefits.  This is not insurance; this is a welfare state program, pure and simple. But it is being covered by the illusion that it is, in fact, an insurance program.  People who have pre-existing conditions that exclude them from getting insurance in the free market are rushing to sign up for the welfare program. People who are generally healthy, meaning younger people, are not rushing to sign up. They don’t want the program. They have been outvoted.”
