FDA Tells Google-Backed 23andMe to Halt DNA Test Service

“23andMe Inc., the Google Inc.-backed DNA analysis company co-founded by Anne Wojcicki, was told by U.S. regulators to halt sales of its main product because it’s being sold without ‘marketing clearance or approval.’  The Saliva Collection Kit and Personal Genome Service, or PGS, tells users whether they carry a disease, are at risk of a disease and would respond to a drug. Most of the uses fall into the category of a medical device and require Food and Drug Administration approval, the agency told the Mountain View, California-based company in a Nov. 22 letter made public today.”

How Many Die From Medical Mistakes in U.S. Hospitals?

“In 2010, the Office of Inspector General for Health and Human Services said that bad hospital care contributed to the deaths of 180,000 patients in Medicare alone in a given year.  Now comes a study in the current issue of the Journal of Patient Safety that says the numbers may be much higher — between 210,000 and 440,000 patients each year who go to the hospital for care suffer some type of preventable harm that contributes to their death, the study says.  That would make medical errors the third-leading cause of death in America, behind heart disease, which is the first, and cancer, which is second.”

Public Opinion: Government Healthcare? No!

“Under Bush, 69% Americans believed that the federal government should be involved in healthcare. Today, only 42% believe this.  Faith began to fade under Bush. But today, the figure is lower than ever.  The Republicans can regain control of the Senate next year. All they have to do is go with this billboard: ‘Senator X voted for ObamaCare.  Vote him out in November.’  Here is my slogan: If you don’t like your senator, you don’t have to keep your senator.  One issue will bring down the Democrats: ObamaCare.

Jeffrey Tucker: Catastrophic Plans

“The system was broken before and now it is broken beyond repair. Daily we read reports of doctors, consumers, and institutions just bailing out completely. Businesses that take people abroad for high-quality, low-cost health care are suddenly booming. It seems that everyone is looking for a way out of the official system. This is the only promising development to emerge from the great healthcare disaster of 2013. If a new and independent sector emerges despite every attempt by government to stop it, the irony is that there will be a good basis for optimism about the future.”

When You Receive Your “Policy Cancelled” Letter, What Then?

“In North Dakota, 30,000 people received such letters. The number of people who have been able to buy replacement insurance on the federal healthcare site is 30. That means the odds against replacement are 1,000 to one. These are not good odds.  With numbers like these, there will be horror stories next year. There will be people who lost their coverage, and then they were struck down with statistically inevitable health afflictions. They will face bankruptcy.  These stories will reach the media. Every story will be a nightmare for their families, and a nightmare for Democrats in Congress.”

From Africa to Anadarko, a Story of Love and Markets

“Dr. G. Keith Smith and the co-founder of Surgery Center, Dr. Steve Lantier, left the medical mainstream in the 1990s. Determined to establish a market-oriented surgery facility, they were told by colleagues at big hospitals and representatives of big insurers that it would never work. Back in those early days, Smith walked by faith—faith in the market and in human motivations.  Today, the Surgery Center of Oklahoma has garnered international attention.  Keith Smith is now  both a passionate libertarian and a kind of evangelist for transparent health care pricing—medical service free of both government and insurance company mandates.”

Why Obama Can’t Just Uncancel All Those Insurance Plans

“State insurance commissioners are not enthusiastic. They’re the people who are actually in charge of approving the plans and rates that private insurers offer in each state. The regulators association threw tepid water on the plan in a statement Thursday, saying the decision ‘threatens to undermine the new market, and may lead to higher premiums and market disruptions in 2014 and beyond.’ These officials can nix the idea at the state level, as Washington state’s regulator already has.  Even if it works, the fix is not a fix—it’s a delay. Whenever the administration does start enforcing that piece of the law, people are going to get another round of cancellation letters.”

Obamacare ‘fix’ could add millions of dollars in government costs

“President Barack Obama’s proposal to allow people to keep canceled health plans for one year could end up costing the government millions of dollars. This is due to a provision of the Affordable Care Act called risk corridors that allows for insurers to share the cost of insuring more expensive customers.  There’s no good estimate yet as to how much the government’s share may be, but a rough calculation from the Kaiser Family Foundation said the difference could be tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of dollars.  Insurance companies structured their premiums based on a balanced mix of healthy customers and sicker customers. That balance could now be in question.”

Obamacare and the New Soviet Man

“All that is missing from Emanuel’s blueprint is the punishment. If America’s youth does not live up to Emanuel’s version of the New American Man, they will not suffer the carnage of the kulaks. No one is suggesting that. But something will be done. And, with government, ‘something done’ always means coercion, even if it comes in the disguised form of an incentive that someone else needs to fund. Obama will not allow his signature legacy to become a signature failure. The extraordinary website problems attending Obamacare may be good news for its advocates. It distracts attention from what could be a far less solvable problem.”

Feds subjected New Mexico woman to vaginal, anal drug search

“Female agents also allegedly pressed their fingers into her vagina looking for drugs.  The woman claims they didn’t discover anything during the on-site strip search, so they took her to University Medical Center of El Paso.  ‘First, medical staff observed her making a bowl movement and no drugs were found at that point,’ Schaur Ives said. ‘They then took an X-ray, but it did not reveal any contraband. They then did a cavity search and they probed her vagina and her anus, they described in the medical records as bi-manual–two handed. Finally, they did a cat scan. Again, they found nothing.’  The ACLU claims the federal agents never secured a search warrant before probing or touching the woman.”
