Denver unemployment sharply lower after marijuana legalization

“Metro Denver’s unadjusted unemployment rate stood at 5.4 percent in April, sharply lower than a year earlier, according to raw county jobs estimates Friday from the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment.  Unemployment in metro Denver was 6.5 percent in April 2013 and 6.4 percent in March of this year, according to the CDLE numbers.  The 5.4 percent unadjusted jobless rate is for a 10-county area that includes Denver, Aurora, Lakewood, Broomfield and Centennial, but not Boulder County.  Boulder County’s unemployment rate was 4.2 percent last month. The rate for metro Denver combined with Boulder was 5.3 percent.”

Europe counts the value of prostitution, drugs to bolster GDP

“As of September, all European Union countries will be required to take fuller accounting of trade in sex, drugs and other underground businesses as part of an overhaul of economic measurements by Eurostat, the European statistics agency.  Because GDP is such an important number one that can sway national policies and make or break politicians the European Union wants numbers ‘better reflecting the economic environment’, said Vincent Bourgeais, a Eurostat spokesman.  With EU governments obliged to reduce debt as a percentage of their economies, the changes are also expected to make growth rates look better, possibly also making debt ratios seem rosier.”

In Jefferson County, Drug Cops Run Wild

“Last year, seven law enforcement agencies in Missouri didn’t supply the required documents to the Auditor’s office for their annual report. State Law makes this lack of compliance a class A misdemeanor, and also prevents the Department of Public Safety from issuing [federal] funds to agencies who have not complied.  Moreover, some members seem to openly disdain public oversight and their roles as public servants. As part of another research inquiry, open records requests were filed with the JCMEG in November 2013. The commander of the task force, Corporal Chris Hoffman, was extremely hostile and disorganized in his response.”

NCIA is the first national trade organization focused on the entire cannabis plant. It was also my first visit to Denver since stores opened up in January, and the feelings of freedom and anticipation for the future were palpable.  Believe it or not, very few people are making a large profit from this new market in Colorado so far. Yes, the tax revenues are coming in from large quantities being sold. But starting a new business is never easy, much less one for a market that has been underground for decades.”

“It looks like any other American farmer’s market. Buyers sniff the wares, test weights and compare, while vendors tout their product. But the only produce on offer is cannabis — organic, of course. The Heritage Farmer’s Market — held over the July 4th long weekend — was the first of its kind in Los Angeles. Despite the scorching sun, the line to get in stretched hundreds of meters. The crowd was diverse and multigenerational, interspersed with hippies, rockers, hipsters and some nondescript suburban types. But they all have at least one thing in common — they all have, as required for entry, a doctor’s prescription.”
