Officers at US nuclear missile base suspended in illegal drugs case

“Two officers whose hands were on the nation’s nuclear trigger have been suspended from duty for alleged possession of illegal drugs, Air Force officials told NBC News on Thursday.  The two ICBM missile launch officers are assigned to the 341st Air Wing at Malmstrom Air Force base in Montana and would be responsible for launching nuclear-armed Minuteman 3 intercontinental ballistic missiles. News of the narcotics probe came as Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel was visiting another ICBM base in Wyoming to give a speech on the importance of the U.S. nuclear weapons mission, which has suffered from morale problems.”

Side Effect Of Legal Pot: Police Budgets Take A Hit

“The decriminalization of pot also stands to remove a funding source for police: property forfeitures from drug dealers. Such funding is ‘going up in smoke,’ The Wall Street Journal reports.  Of the $6.5 billion in asset forfeitures in drug cases from 2002-2012, marijuana accounted for $1 billion, the Journal says, citing data from the U.S. Justice Department.  And while most cash generated from drug-related property forfeitures goes to the law enforcement agency that made the bust, tax money from legal marijuana sales goes to state and local governments. Police may get only a share of that money, or none at all.”

U. of California extends smoking ban to e-cigarettes, chewing tobacco

“Just weeks after instituting new smoking rules that allowed electronic cigarettes at the University of California, Irvine, campus officials have reversed themselves and banned the nicotine-vapor devices.  University spokeswoman Cathy Lawhon tells the Orange County Register (http://bit.ly/JYBxaK ) that the revised rules bring Irvine into alignment with system-wide UC regulations that prohibit the use of all nicotine products. Each of UC’s nine other campuses banned all smoking as of Jan. 1, plus e-cigarettes and chewing tobacco.”

California Considers Banning Online Tobacco, E-Cigarette Sales

“Online sales of electronic cigarettes and tobacco could be banned under a bill introduced by lawmakers on Monday.  Claiming kids and teens have easy access to tobacco and electronic cigarettes, Assemblyman Roger Dickinson (D-Sacramento) is introducing a bill blocking people from buying both on the Web.  ‘We need to do more to protect our children from a tobacco addiction and a lifetime of health-related problems,’ he said. ‘E-cigarettes are very much an emergency trend, and they are being marketed very closely to children and teens,’ said Kori Titus with Breathe California.  Since the health risks are still being studied, Titus believes they should not fall into the hands of children.”

Legalization of Pot Means Trouble for Private Prisons

“At one time, private prison investments were great. They were making tons of money because it was this grand idea on how it was going to be so much better than the state led prisons. However, it now looks like one of the worst investments you can make.  With the potential abolition of mandatory sentencing for drug crimes, and many prisons cutting ties with CCA, MTC, and GEO Group (NYSE: GEO) because of their poor management abilities, it’s just going to get worse. If these company prisons end up having to bring in riskier offenders to already understaffed facilities, more problems are sure to arise. When the problems increase, they become a less attractive option.”

Colorado Marijuana Dispensary Uses Bitcoin to Evade Federal Laws

“At least one marijuana dispensary in Colorado has reportedly begun accepting bitcoin.  Colorado’s decision to legalize cannabis has been filling headlines for weeks, and the hype is still going strong.  Investors have been piling up in the marijuana market, ranging from reputable medicinal marijuana companies to highly speculative penny stocks.  Outside some dispensaries the queues of pot lovers are incredibly large, resembling the lines frequently formed in front of Apple Stores following an iPhone launch.  A somewhat bigger problem for dispensaries lurks in federal law. They cannot accept credit card payments, so all purchases must be in cash – or bitcoin.”

Aussie Mum In Anti-Bitcoin Crusade After Son’s Death

“Anna Skelly came home from holiday with her husband to find her son dead on her bed after what looks to be a bad reaction to cocaine. Cocaine which he reportedly acquired from an online drug marketplace, financed by Bitcoin transactions. Now the Sydney mother is going on a crusade against the crypto-currency, calling on the Federal Government to ban it in Australia.  Anna Skelly has launched her own change.org petition to have Bitcoin banned in Australia.  ‘Tony Abbott,’ the petition starts, ‘commence an inquiry into Bitcoin – it’s protecting drug dealers.'”

Mt. Gox Seizures Linked to Silk Road in Fed Testimonies

“Last summer, news that federal agents had seized a combined $5M from accounts owned by Mt. Gox roiled bitcoin markets. The warrants enabling the action cited improper filings when the company opened its bank accounts, including unlicensed operation of a money service business. Yet, written testimonies from federal regulators for the recent Senate hearings on digital currencies indicate the seizures were actually part of the much larger crackdown on online narcotics marketplace Silk Road – insight that presumably had to remain hidden at the time of the seizures due to the ongoing investigation.”

Banks Say No to Marijuana Money, Legal or Not

“Banks, including state-chartered ones, are reluctant to provide traditional services to marijuana businesses. They fear that federal regulators and law enforcement authorities might punish them.  The limitations have created unique burdens for legal marijuana business owners. They pay employees with envelopes of cash. They haul Chipotle and Nordstrom bags containing thousands of dollars in $10 and $20 bills to supermarkets to buy money orders. When they are able to open bank accounts — often under false pretenses — many have taken to storing money in Tupperware containers filled with air fresheners to mask the smell of marijuana.”
