French court rules e-cigs are tobacco products

“The store Esmokeclean in the town of Plaisance-du-Touch near Toulouse was told by a French court on Monday that it could no longer sell e-cigarettes, in a ruling likely to spark uproar among e-cigarette store owners.  The landmark decision by the court in Toulouse is subject to appeal but could eventually see the distribution of e-cigarettes limited by a state-imposed monopoly on tobacco sales. It is just the latest development in an increasingly bitter war between electronic cigarettes – battery-powered, vapour-releasing tubes and conventional tobacco.”

Your Money or (Five Months of) Your Life

“Jimmy Tebeau will be out of jail earlier than expected.  Tebeau faced a 30-month sentence after he pleaded guilty in June 2012 to maintaining a drug-involved premises — the federal government’s way of saying Tebeau allowed a rampant drug market at Camp Zoe, where he lived with his wife and children. Tebeau was also fined $50,000 and ordered to serve 200 hours of community service.  It is worth noting that Tebeau’s plea agreement with the government contained the admission that Tebeau himself had done nothing wrong.  It is unlikely that Jimmy Tebeau would have faced jail time or forfeiture of his estate if Missouri law enforcement had not rendered their services to the DEA.”

E-cigarettes packed with marijuana oil set to boom in Colorado

“Electronic cigarettes may be under fire in New York City, but in the land of legal pot, they provide a discreet way to break the rules — and they’re economical.  ‘It’s a more intense high than just smoking pot,’ said Bob Richmond, 39, of his e-cig, which was designed not for synthetic nicotine but for highly concentrated marijuana oil.  Richmond said the odorless smoking device makes it convenient to spark up in public places — which is a no-no in the Centennial State.  ‘It’s also very discreet,’ Richmond said. ‘I can walk around Walmart and pull it out for a few puffs and nobody notices.’  These cartridges are so strong that they can last for weeks at a time.”

How Police Became a Standing Army

“America has been transformed into a country where police conduct something on the order of 50,000 SWAT raids a year.  The trend towards police militarization did not begin in earnest until the 1960s, when law enforcement struggled with civil unrest and cracked down on the drugs associated with political dissidents and the counterculture. It also crept in subtly through ‘indirect militarization,’ when domestic law enforcement agencies ‘take on more and more characteristics of an army.’ That phenomenon can largely be traced to longtime Los Angeles Chief of Police Daryl Gates, who founded America’s first SWAT team.”

Law enforcement accused of ‘policing for profit’

“Parr’s law firm conducted a study beginning in January 2000 and ending in October 2004. During that time, researchers discovered that $12.8 million was seized, forfeited and distributed to metro agencies, Parr said.  OKC police received $6 million, the Oklahoma County DA’s office was awarded almost $4 million and the remainder was split between the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office and the Central Oklahoma Metropolitan Interdiction Team (COMIT).  More than 80 percent of all cash seizures during the study were under $10,000.  ‘Almost all were from out-of-state cars. Basically, it’s a shakedown of all out-of-state vehicles,’ Parr said.”

Should Drug-War Victims Pardon the Drug Warriors?

hornberger2

“Have you ever seen anything so ridiculous in your entire life? The federal government has ruined the lives of countless people with its much-vaunted, decades-long war on drugs. And then the president and the California governor show what good and compassionate people they are by offering a tiny few of the people whose lives they have destroyed a pardon or clemency.  It’s all show time at Christmas time. If Obama and Brown really cared about the people whose lives their drug war has destroyed, they would pardon or grant clemency to every single non-violent drug offender rotting away in prison right now.”

A.G.: Marijuana Legalization Would Save Calif. “Hundreds of Millions”

“Backers of marijuana legalization have long argued that ending the war on a plant and lifting prohibition on cannabis means big money for California. And Attorney General Kamala Harris agrees with them.  If California legalized marijuana, the state would save ‘hundreds of millions of dollars,’ according to the Attorney General’s office. That’s on top of hundreds of millions more in potential tax revenue — meaning legal weed could, conservatively, put California half a billion dollars in the black.  That’s real money.  This isn’t Harris being weed-friendly, either: this is an analysis required by law.”

Uruguay may have started a marijuana legalization storm

“It’s barely been a month since Uruguay moved to legalize marijuana, and yet the effects of the decision are already being felt well outside of its borders.  Neighboring Argentina, a long-time proponent of keeping marijuana illegal, gave its first indication that Uruguay’s pivot has tempted it to at least consider legalizing the drug.  There are signs that Mexico is pondering legalization too.  Chile already allows adults to privately consume drugs, and may be on the verge of mulling further legalization of marijuana.  An overwhelming majority of Argentine, Chilean, and Mexican youth are in favor of legalization—81%, 79%, and 73%, respectively.”

Legal Marijuana No Simple Matter for Colorado Retailers

“Though he was only the seventh person in the city of Denver to apply for a license, the constant changes mean that he won’t be able to open until about January 10, over a week beyond the official start of recreational marijuana sales. The process has been similar for dispensary owners all over Denver, which means it might be one of the few places where a legal retail marijuana shortage will happen right away. The licensing for retail locations and retail grows is happening at the same time. This would be a problem for those trying to open on January 1, except that the state has allowed a one-time transfer of medical marijuana to retail. This transfer is how all stores will start.”

Colorado Makes History with First Legal Retail Marijuana Sales

“For many people New Year’s Eve means going to bars and celebrating with a night of drinking and carousing with their friends. For Adam Hartle and Anthony Hasham, the night was a little different. The duo flew into Denver from Jacksonville, Florida, in order to be first in line for Colorado’s historic legal retail marijuana sales. Hartle and Hasham came prepared with a tent, and set up camp in front of 3D, Denver’s Discrete Dispensary at 6:00pm on New Year’s Eve. They were the first to arrive, making it even before the news cameras.”
