2013 was a year for American rule breakers

“Some people change their societies by being elected to high office or rising to lead powerful institutions. But others use more direct methods: They do what they think is right, without worrying too much about the rules, and hope that their example will change public attitudes and, eventually, the rules that govern society.  2013 was a big year for this kind of insubordinate idealist. While few took the kind of immense personal risks that Snowden did, people willing to defy authority, social convention, and the law have changed how we think about everything from the nature of love to the future of our financial system.”

War on Drugs more about big business than curbing marijuana use

“Private prison interests have given nearly $200,000 to 79 of the 149 Oklahoma legislators since 2004. House Speaker T.W. Shannon (R-Lawton) was the No. 1 recipient of private prison-related donations totaling $34,950. That figure includes $22,500 contributed by three private prison companies to fund the 2013 Speaker’s Ball.  Meanwhile, Gov. Mary Fallin has enjoyed private prison support, which includes $33,608 in gifts and campaign contributions.  As the private prison industry gives to Oklahoma’s elected officials, it also receives plenty in return. Spending on private prisons increased from $57 million in 2004 to $73 million last fiscal year, said DOC spokesman Jerry Massie.”

Cannabinoids Lead to Leukemia Cancer Cell Destruction

“One new study, from researchers with Saint George’s University of London and published in Anticancer Research, reveals how various compounds within cannabis are able to work together to kill human leukemia cells.  The study looked at three non-psychoactive cannabinoids, including cannabidiol, cannabigerol, and cannabigevarin. These compounds were tested on two leukemia cell lines where they acted synergistically to fight the cancerous cells.  In total, six compounds were tested and each had anti-cancer properties as effective as those in THC. When combined with one another, the compounds had an even greater effect.”

Arizona Dispensaries Sold 2.5+ Tons of Medical Marijuana in First Year

“Arizona’s medical-marijuana dispensaries sold more than 2.5 tons of marijuana in the past 12 months, officials say.  From December 6th, 2012 — opening day for the state’s first state-authorized dispensary, Arizona Organix — to December 9th of this year, 5,279 pounds of marijuana were sold, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. The health department provided the numbers this morning following a New Times records request made last month.  Online records show 77 dispensaries are now open across Arizona, with a few more scheduled for openings in early 2014. Voters approved Arizona’s medical-marijuana law, which authorizes the shops, in a 2010 ballot initiative.”

Marijuana Breath Test, Alternative To Controversial Blood Test For Pot?

“Currently, THC-blood tests are the norm in most states that have laws regulating marijuana use while driving. They generally dictate that drivers caught with THC in their bloodstream at a level of five nanograms of THC per milliliter of blood are considered ‘under the influence’ and may be subject to penalty.  But unlike blood-alcohol level, which have a direct correlation with a driver’s intoxication, blood-THC levels don’t necessarily indicate a level of impairment.  In one study, six of 25 participants who had consumed marijuana still tested positive for active levels of THC after a full seven days of abstaining.”

E-cigarettes to be banned under Oklahoma governor’s executive order

“Fallin said she’s trying to protect state employees and visitors.  ‘E-cigarettes release vapor that contains chemicals that can impact employees and visitors to state property,’ she said. ‘Additionally, many electronic cigarettes look like traditional cigarettes and emit a vapor that looks like smoke. This creates confusion for employees and visitors, and presents enforcement challenges for state agencies.  ‘If you’re a state employee who smokes or uses e-cigarettes, I encourage you to make quitting your New Year’s resolution,’ she said. ‘We have resources at your disposal to help you quit.'”

Bitcoin poker wins online after U.S. shuts cash sites

“The move to bitcoin in online poker started after the Department of Justice seized three of the biggest poker websites in the U.S. on April 15, 2011, a day known as Black Friday in the poker community.  Federal authorities aren’t sure if it’s a currency, a security, or something else altogether. Designation aside, bitcoin is increasingly used in very traditional purchases, from buying a house to getting a beer, and lately, playing a few hands of Texas Hold ‘em.  The online poker sites embrace this connection with a world that operates without the blessing or even direct interaction with traditional financial institutions.”

Amateur fetish porn is jumping into the Bitcoin game

“It’s a bit like Facebook for fetishes. Through March 1, Master Fet and Gimp Man are allowing performers to collect on 100 percent of the site’s revenue.  ‘We believe bitcoins, and digital currency in general, holds great promise to innovate not only the adult industry, but perhaps the way the world understands and uses currency as a whole,’ he said, adding that certain niches like erotic hypnosis and sleeping fetish are currently outlawed by Visa and Mastercard.”

Inside the bustling, dicey world of Bitcoin gambling

“Bitcoin gambling has been around for as long as the currency itself, which was created in late 2008.  In fact, the timing couldn’t have been better. Two years earlier, Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which prohibited casinos from accepting payments for bets made online. The move pushed online gambling into the corners of the Deep Web, where users are protected by the Tor browser. And it created a high demand for online gambling sites based in Europe and Canada, where the practice is legal.  In both cases, Bitcoin makes an ideal currency for bets placed, due to its anonymous nature and its low payment-processing costs.”

The New Politics of Pot: The 2014 Candidates Who Want to Legalize It

“Forget decriminalization or medical marijuana. Bolstered by state ballot victories, top-tier contenders in 2014 are seeking full legalization, the drug’s highest-profile advocacy ever. Advocates for marijuana legalization say the 2014 elections represent the first time that serious, top-tier candidates for major state and federal offices are advocating for full legalization of the drug. In Pennsylvania and Maryland, top contenders for the Democratic nomination for governor are calling for legalization, as is the likely Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine. And earlier this week, a legalization bill was introduced in the Legislature in New York, making the state the sixth with an active bill.”
