Ron Paul: Federal Reserve Steals From the Poor and Gives to the Rich

10182011_Ron_Paul_article

“As recently as five years ago, it would have been unheard of for a Wall Street insider and former Fed official to speak so bluntly about how the Fed acts as a reverse Robin Hood. But a quick glance at the latest unemployment numbers shows that QE is not benefiting the average American. It is increasingly obvious that the Fed’s post-2008 policies of bailouts, money printing, and bond buying benefited the big banks and the politically-connected investment firms. It would be a mistake to think that QE is the first time the Fed‘s policies have benefited the well-to-do at the expense of the average American. The Fed’s polices have always benefited crony capitalists and big spending politicians.”

Bitcoin to Congress: Back Off

“Bitcoin’s representatives are appearing before Congress this week for a first-ever series of hearings into the crypto-currency. And they’ve got a message for the array of D.C. lawmakers and regulators looking to tame Bitcoin: If the government’s attempts to oversee the digital currency are too harsh or intrusive, Bitcoin users easily could go offshore or underground — and then no one in Washington will be able to control what they do.  Representatives from the Justice Department and the International Centre for Missing & Exploited Children also said the possibility of Bitcoin companies moving offshore would make it harder for U.S. authorities to find and prosecute illegal activity.”

Obamacare ‘fix’ could add millions of dollars in government costs

“President Barack Obama’s proposal to allow people to keep canceled health plans for one year could end up costing the government millions of dollars. This is due to a provision of the Affordable Care Act called risk corridors that allows for insurers to share the cost of insuring more expensive customers.  There’s no good estimate yet as to how much the government’s share may be, but a rough calculation from the Kaiser Family Foundation said the difference could be tens of millions or even hundreds of millions of dollars.  Insurance companies structured their premiums based on a balanced mix of healthy customers and sicker customers. That balance could now be in question.”

Venezuelan President Maduro ‘to expand price controls’

“Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro says he plans to extend price controls to all consumer goods, if he is given powers to govern by decree.  In a televised address, Mr Maduro said that he wanted to set legal limits on businesses’ profit margins.  His announcement followed the seizure on Saturday of shops accused of selling electronic goods at inflated prices.  The National Assembly is expected to vote this week on his request to govern temporarily by decree.  The president demanded there be ‘zero tolerance with speculators’ in his speech broadcast on Sunday. ‘This is beyond usury, this is theft,’ he added.”

Maduro’s ‘occupy retail’ cry comes as Christmas gift

“Christmas seemed to have come early in Venezuela as snaking lines of sleep-deprived people formed outside fancy stores and soldiers stood on guard after President Nicolas Maduro ordered the army to ‘occupy’ a chain of electronics stores that was ‘hoarding goods with the objective of hobbling the country’s economy’.  In a nationwide crackdown, which started on Friday night, top managers of the Daka chain were arrested and its stores forced to sell products at much cheaper prices. ‘We’re doing this for the good of the nation’, said Mr. Maduro in a televised speech, accusing the country’s elite of waging an economic ‘war’ against Venezuela with the help of Washington.”

Inflation, Shortages And Economic Turmoil: Venezuela On The Brink

“Earlier this month, in another attempt to ensure ‘happiness for all people,’ Maduro began to hand out Christmas bonuses, in preparation for the coming elections in December. But political campaigning is not the only reason for the government’s open-handedness. The annual inflation rate in Venezuela has been rapidly rising in recent months, and has now reached a staggering 54 percent (not accounting for possible under-estimations). Although not yet officially in hyper-inflation, monetary expansion is pushing Venezuela toward the brink.  In such an environment, paychecks need to be distributed quickly, before prices have time to rise; hence, early bonuses.”

Obamacare and the New Soviet Man

“All that is missing from Emanuel’s blueprint is the punishment. If America’s youth does not live up to Emanuel’s version of the New American Man, they will not suffer the carnage of the kulaks. No one is suggesting that. But something will be done. And, with government, ‘something done’ always means coercion, even if it comes in the disguised form of an incentive that someone else needs to fund. Obama will not allow his signature legacy to become a signature failure. The extraordinary website problems attending Obamacare may be good news for its advocates. It distracts attention from what could be a far less solvable problem.”

Bill Bonner: When the Feds Tell You Bend Over…

Bill-Bonner2

“Slaves could practice their own religions. They spoke their own languages. They were free to operate their own businesses. They could make money. Some became slavers – like Jan Jensen, who became Morat Rais, whose son Anthony used the family name Van Salee and moved to New York. With the profits of the white slave trade, he was able to buy a substantial part of what is today Brooklyn.  Some slaves became traders and financiers, buying and selling goods from all over the Mediterranean. At least one amassed a fortune while still a slave. Some, like Miguel de Cervantes and Captain John Smith of the Virginia colony, got away.  Others didn’t want to get away.”

Should anyone own parts of the moon?

“Robert Bigelow, the founder of Bigelow Aerospace, made a fortune in the hotel and real estate businesses, and he’s pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into an enterprise that will create inflatable habitats designed for life beyond Earth. He entered into an agreement with NASA to provide a report on how ventures like his could help NASA get back to the moon, and even Mars, faster and cheaper. The catch? It needs to be worth his while.  Bigelow is applying to the FAA’s Office of Commercial Space Transportation to amend a 1967 international agreement on the moon so that a system of private property rights can be established there.”

Chicago’s Sky-High Tobacco Tax Creates a Huge Black Market

“Tobacco importers rent 18-wheelers and drive to tobacco-growing states — recipients of federal tobacco subsidies — that have very low taxes on tobacco. They load up these low-tax products. Then they drive to Chicago. They sell the tobacco at below-market prices. Cigarettes are especially profitable.  This is not regarded by politicians as the free market at work — a tax revolt by the little people. They see this as a crime. They label this market as a black market. In Cook County, it really is. Blacks are the primary targets. A local ABC-TV reporter says that ‘taxpayers are losing millions.’ On the contrary, tax collectors are losing millions. Taxpayers are saving millions.”
