How One New Tariff Could Cost You $5,000 This Year

“You probably won’t save $5,000 in energy costs in three years with solar panels. So you might as well wait until the tariff expires.  This won’t help American solar companies, it will just make people delay installing solar. This could end up slaughtering the entire solar industry. It almost makes you wonder if the real reason is to protect coal and oil energy producers.”

Drug lords make billions smuggling gold to Miami for jewelry and phones

“Much of that gold comes from outlaw mines deep in the jungle where dangerous chemicals are poisoning rainforests and laborers who toil for scraps of metal, according to human rights watchdogs and industry executives.  In comparison, the U.S. gold supply, mostly mined in Nevada and Alaska, offers stiff competition and regulations. Big companies control the big mines. Smaller companies looking to deal in U.S. gold are restricted to buying recycled ‘scrap’ gold from pawnshops and jewelry stores. To gain a competitive edge, many U.S. gold traders look south.”

First ever English gold coin worth just a penny will sell for £500,000

“Some 52,000 of the King Henry III gold pennies were struck nearly 800 years ago before it was realised they were too heavy.  The basic mistake meant the gold it was made from was worth more than the coin itself.  This made the coins financially unviable as the holders could get more money from melting them down for gold rather than using them as currency.  Virtually all of them were smelted and were replaced with correctly weighed pennies in 1257.”

There Will Be No Viking Longboats Cruising the Mississippi

Switzerland-based Viking Cruises, which wanted to build and send small cruise ships up the Mississippi River, leaving new tourism dollars for river towns in its wake, is backing off its plan.  Our own federal laws are to blame. More specifically, President Grover Cleveland’s Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA). The 1886 law requires that in order to ferry passengers between ports in the United States, the ship must have been built in the United States and be owned and operated by Americans.”

Black helicopters and ‘Ride of the Valkyries’: The war on pot in California

“Still fighting the culture wars, Reagan and his advisers decided early on that marijuana was the biggest drug threat facing the country. And so a couple of years into his first term, federal and California officials came up with a battle plan to target cultivation in the northern part of the state. The phrase ‘battle plan’ isn’t much of an exaggeration here.”

Do You Live in One of These States That People are Fleeing?

“Most of the states with dropping populations are high tax states. California, Rhode Island, and New York are all expected to lose Congressional seats. Illinois is hit especially hard with a fleeing populace, so much so that it may lose two seats.”

Raising Millionaires’ Taxes Will Drive Them Away

“If New Jersey and Massachusetts approve new millionaires’ taxes, it is difficult to predict how much will be raised and where these funds will ultimately wind up. But if New York and California are any guide, income surtaxes will be destructive. When it comes to higher taxation, interstate migration is just the tip of the iceberg. Higher-tax states, for instance, see less innovative activity and scientific research according to an analysis by economists at the Federal Reserve and UC Berkeley. Any benefits of millionaires’ taxes do not make up for the economic and social toll caused by fewer innovative activities and correspondingly lower job creation.”

California Has the Highest Poverty Rate in America. Why?

“So how is it that California, which has spent nearly $1 trillion on antipoverty programs, has the highest poverty rate in the nation? It turns out that state and local bureaucrats who administer California’s antipoverty programs have proven stubbornly resistant to pro-work reforms that have been effective at spurring individuals to pull themselves out of poverty.”

How New Tax Cuts Are “Fighting for $15”

“While still early in the wake of the enactment of the tax-reform law, the demonstrable results seem to be in stark contrast with the mandatory minimum-wage laws requiring a $15 wage.”

Ridiculous licensing rules are holding back people who want to work

“Occupational licensing is corrupt and idiotic. It’s idiotic because no one needs a license to braid hair, arrange flowers, or do interior decorating, or 300 hours of training to shampoo hair, all real examples of occupations subject to licensure. And it’s corrupt because although it’s couched in language about protecting the consumer, it’s actually about fleecing consumers and protecting existing players from competition via government power.”
